Editor’s note

One month, seen clearly

Lens is a new, shorter companion to Sunyra Magazine: a practical guide to a single month, published as the month begins.

November 2026 is a month of turning points that are easy to feel and easy to misread. The double retrograde of Mercury and Venus that began in October ends in the same week as Diwali. Mars, which has spent eight weeks in Cancer, the sign where it is weakest, crosses into Leo on the evening of 12 November and sits within two degrees of Jupiter and Ketu. And after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20–21 November, the wedding season begins.

We have tried to make this a guide you can use rather than a forecast you have to believe. Every date, time and position in these pages was computed with the Sunyra engine for New Delhi — the same engine that draws your free kundli — and we say where almanacs differ. When we describe what a transit tends to bring, we describe tendencies and seasons, never fixed events.

A chart describes weather, not fate. The point of knowing the weather is to dress well for it.

Inside: the month at a glance, a day-by-day panchang for all thirty days, the Diwali week with its evening muhurtas, Kartik Purnima, a calm guide to what a muhurta is, two features — one on marriage, one on work and money — and a two-page spread for each of the twelve Moon signs.

With care,
Sunyra

The month at a glance

The sky turns forward

Mercury turns direct on 13 Nov and Venus on 14 Nov. Mars enters Leo on 12 Nov at 20:19. The new Moon of Diwali falls on 9 Nov and the full Moon of Kartik Purnima on 24 Nov. There are no eclipses this month.

The five moments that shape the month

13 Nov · Mercury direct

After three weeks of second drafts, Mercury stations at 10°48′ Libra and begins to move forward. Papers, plans and conversations that stalled since 24 October start to move; give it a few days before you sign the biggest things.

14 Nov · Venus direct

Venus turns direct at 28°38′ Virgo, the sign of its debilitation, after a retrograde that began on 3 October. Love and money questions reviewed since then can now be settled — gently, because Venus stays weak in Virgo until 22 Nov.

12 Nov · Mars into Leo

At 20:19 Mars leaves Cancer, its sign of debilitation, for Leo, a friendly fire sign. Within four days it passes Ketu (15 Nov) and Jupiter (16 Nov) at about one and a half degrees of Leo, in the nakshatra Magha.

16 Nov · Vrishchika Sankranti

The Sun leaves Libra, where it is debilitated, for Scorpio at 19:44. In the tradition the Sun regains strength here, and the solar month of Vrishchika begins.

24 Nov · Kartik Purnima

The full Moon is exact at 20:24 in Taurus, in Krittika — the star that gives the month of Kartika its name. Dev Deepawali, Guru Nanak Jayanti and the Kartik snan fall on this day.

15 Nov – 16 Nov

Three in Leo

In the middle of November, Mars, Jupiter and Ketu stand within two degrees of each other at the head of Leo, in Magha — the nakshatra of ancestors and thrones. Mars passes Ketu on 15 Nov and Jupiter on 16 Nov.

The old texts call Mars with Jupiter Guru–Mangala yoga: courage guided by wisdom. With Ketu beside them, it is courage that needs a purpose. Each sign spread shows where it falls for you.

Diwali week

The evening of Lakshmi Puja

Lakshmi Puja is on Sun 8 Nov. Amavasya begins at 11:28 that morning and runs until 12:32 on 9 Nov, so it holds the whole evening of the 8th — and the evening of the 9th is already Pratipada.

Pradosh and the fixed signs

Household Lakshmi Puja is done after sunset, in pradosh. Many families also wait for a sthira (fixed) sign to rise in the east, because the tradition holds that what is begun under a fixed sign stays. Two fixed signs rise on Diwali night at New Delhi:

Window (IST)Rising signUsed for
17:55–19:50Vrishabha (Taurus)Household Lakshmi Puja, the most common choice
00:25–02:42
night of 8/9 Nov
Simha (Leo)Nishita puja, kept by some families and temples

Sunset at New Delhi is at 17:31. The Vrishabha window falls inside the early evening, which is why most almanacs print a Lakshmi Puja muhurta of roughly 17:55 to 19:50 for Delhi. In other cities the window shifts by up to an hour: your local sunrise and latitude decide it.

Narak Chaturdashi and Choti Diwali

Chaturdashi runs from 10:48 on 7 Nov to 11:28 on 8 Nov. The oil bath of Narak Chaturdashi is taken before sunrise on a day that dawns in Chaturdashi — Sun 8 Nov, the same day as Lakshmi Puja this year. Many families light the lamps of Choti Diwali on the evening of the 7th, once Chaturdashi has begun.

Dhanteras

Krishna Trayodashi begins at 10:31 on 6 Nov and holds that evening, so Dhanteras, Dhanvantari Jayanti and the Yama deepam fall on Fri 6 Nov (sunset 17:32). Buying a small piece of metal is the custom; buying beyond your means is not.

Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj

Amavasya ends at 12:32 on 9 Nov; Tue 10 Nov dawns in Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright half of Kartika. That is Govardhan Puja and Annakut — the mountain of food offered in memory of Krishna lifting the hill — and, in Gujarat, the new year (Bestu Varas).

Dwitiya begins at 14:00 on 10 November and runs until 15:53 on the 11th, so it holds the whole afternoon of Wed 11 Nov — the time the rule asks for. Bhai Dooj is on the 11th; a few families who follow the earliest afternoon Dwitiya keep it on the 10th.

Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas, centred on local noon; Rahu kaal is the eighth part of the day traditionally avoided for beginnings. Both are computed for New Delhi.

Five small, practical things

  • Clean and declutter in the days before Dhanteras: the tradition says Lakshmi enters a house that is ready.
  • Settle what you owe — money, thanks or apology — before the new Moon. It is what the festival of new account books is for.
  • Light one lamp facing south on Dhanteras evening for the Yama deepam, in memory of those who have gone before.
  • Keep gifts within your means; Venus in its weakest sign is a gentle reminder.
  • On Bhai Dooj, call the brother or sister you have not spoken to in a while.

Explainer

What is a muhurta?

A muhurta is a well-chosen moment to begin something. It is a tool for starting well — never a reason for fear.

The word has two meanings. Strictly, a muhurta is a unit of time: 1/30 of a day, about 48 minutes, so that the day from sunrise to sunset holds fifteen of them and the night another fifteen. More loosely, it means an auspicious window chosen for a beginning — a wedding, a griha pravesh, a new business, a puja.

Choosing one is called muhurta shastra. The classical texts, above all the Muhurta Chintamani, look at the five limbs of the day — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana — and then at the sign rising in the east at the moment itself. Different undertakings have different rules: a journey favours “movable” nakshatras like Swati, a house-warming favours “fixed” ones like Rohini, and so on.

What a muhurta can and cannot do

A good muhurta is like starting a journey in good weather. It does not make a weak plan strong, a wrong partner right, or a bad investment safe. And a less-than-perfect one does not doom anything: countless happy marriages and successful businesses began on ordinary days.

Choose the best time you reasonably can — then stop worrying about it.

Festivals

Chhath, Dev Uthani and Kartik Purnima

After Diwali the bright fortnight of Kartika brings three of the year’s most loved observances: the Sun worship of Chhath, the god’s awakening on Prabodhini Ekadashi, and the lamps of Kartik Purnima.

Chhath Puja

Chhath honours Surya and Chhathi Maiya on Kartika Shukla Shashthi. Shashthi runs from 23:24 on 14 Nov to 02:01 on 16 Nov, so it holds the sunset of Sun 15 Nov.

DayRitualTime at New Delhi

Sun 15 NovSandhya arghya to the setting Sunsunset 17:27
Mon 16 NovUsha arghya to the rising Sun; the fast endssunrise 06:44

Sunrise and sunset differ by city: on 15 Nov the Sun sets at 17:00 in Patna and 18:00 in Mumbai. Use your own ghat’s time.

Prabodhini Ekadashi — Dev Uthani

On the Ekadashi of Kartika’s bright half, Vishnu is said to wake from the four months’ sleep that began in Ashadha, and Chaturmas ends. This year Ekadashi runs from 07:16 on 20 Nov to 06:32 on 21 Nov — it touches no sunrise at all, a kshaya Ekadashi. Almanacs therefore differ: some keep the fast on Friday 20 November, when Ekadashi is running; others on Saturday 21 November, because the 20th dawns in Dashami. Follow the almanac your family uses.

Tulsi Vivah, the marriage of the tulsi plant to Shaligram (Vishnu), is kept on Dwadashi, Sat 21 Nov, in most homes, and on the Ekadashi itself in others. With it the season of weddings begins.

Tue 24 Nov · Full Moon 20:24

Kartik Purnima

Purnima runs from 23:43 on 23 Nov to 20:23 on 24 Nov: it holds the sunrise and the evening of the 24th. The full Moon is exact at 20:24 in Taurus, in Krittika.

Kartik snan. A dawn bath in a river or at home ends the month-long Kartik vrat for those who keep it. Deepdaan — floating a lamp on water — follows in the evening.

Dev Deepawali. In Varanasi the ghats are lit with lakhs of lamps on the evening of Purnima: the Diwali of the gods, celebrating Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura.

Guru Nanak Jayanti. The birth of Guru Nanak Dev is traditionally celebrated on Kartik Purnima, with prabhat pheris in the days before and langar on the day.

Why Krittika matters. Lunar months are named after the nakshatra in which their full Moon falls. Kartika is the month of Krittika, the Pleiades — and this year the Moon is in Krittika at the very moment it is full.

Feature · Love and marriage

Wedding season and your chart

From Dev Uthani to Kharmas, India marries. What should you actually look at in a chart — and what can you safely stop worrying about?

Feature · Love and marriage

Why the season starts now

Weddings traditionally pause during Chaturmas, the four months when Vishnu sleeps, and resume after Prabodhini Ekadashi (20 Nov–21 Nov this year). They pause again during Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius — from 16 Dec — so the last ten days of November and the first half of December are the season’s first busy stretch.

This year the sky helps. Venus, the planet of marriage, turns direct on 14 Nov and returns to its own sign, Libra, on 22 Nov. Through the second half of the month both Venus and Jupiter are well away from the Sun (Venus at least 30°, Jupiter at least 87°), so neither is combust — one of the conditions muhurta texts check before any wedding date.

What to look at in your own chart

  • The 7th house and its lord — the partner and the marriage. Where the lord sits and what aspects it says more than any single score.
  • Venus (and Jupiter for a woman’s chart, in the classical reading) — the capacity for affection and the significator of the spouse.
  • The Navamsa (D9) — the chart astrologers read to confirm what the birth chart promises for marriage.
  • The running dasha — marriage tends to come when the dasha lord is connected to the 7th house, its lord, Venus or the Navamsa’s 7th.
  • Jupiter’s transit — Jupiter over the 7th from the Moon or lagna, or aspecting it, is a classic window for commitment.

What you can stop worrying about

One low Guna Milan score. The 36-point score reads only the two Moons. Exceptions (parihara) cancel many doshas, and serious matching also reads the 7th houses, Venus, the Navamsa and Manglik status of both people.

“Manglik” as a verdict. Mars in the Manglik houses is very common — by the usual rules a large share of all charts qualify — and the texts list many cancellations. It describes temperament and energy, which two people can understand and plan for.

Venus’s retrograde months. They were for talking and reviewing, not a curse. A relationship that came through October honestly is stronger for it.

Two charts do not decide a marriage. Two people do.

How a wedding muhurta is chosen

Muhurta Chintamani’s chapter on marriage (vivaha prakarana) works through the day in layers. The first layers are the same for everyone; the last ones are personal to the couple and the place.

  1. The season. Outside Chaturmas and Kharmas; Jupiter and Venus not combust.
  2. The Moon’s nakshatra. Eleven are classically favoured: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.
  3. The tithi. Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya are avoided.
  4. The couple. The day’s Moon should be favourable from both partners’ Moon signs (chandra bala) and birth stars (tara bala).
  5. The lagna. Finally, a clean rising sign at the place, at the time of the pheras — the step that needs an astrologer and the exact location.

Mesha · Moon sign · November 2026

Aries

For Aries Moons, November belongs to the heart. Jupiter is in your 5th all month, Mars — your own ruler — climbs out of debilitation to join it on 12 November, and the planets of words and love start moving forward again in your 7th.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 7th for your 6th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 7th on 22 November. Virgo is Venus’s weakest sign, so until the 22nd the month favours kindness in daily routines and small acts of care, at a gentle pace; after that, partnership and marriage talk come more easily.

Jupiter in your 5th all month: one of the best transits for love and for having children. Few months are better for love questions, so ask the real ones.

With Mars joining Jupiter from 12 November, feelings run warm — say what you want plainly and kindly.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 7th on 13 November, so contracts and talks with partners and clients start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Mars moves into your 5th on 12 November: passion, competitive play and bold creative work — and a reminder to keep speculation small.

The Sun moves into your 8th on 16 November: a quieter time for energy; rest and check paperwork.

Money. Jupiter in your 5th: speculation is tempting; study and creative work pay. Saturn in your 12th: trim expenses; foreign work possible. Rahu in your 11th: one of Rahu’s best positions for income.

Health and energy

Until 12 November Mars is debilitated in your 4th (home, mother and inner peace), so energy there may feel scattered or touchy; from the 12th it is stronger in Leo, in your 5th.

Saturn in your 12th is the first phase of Sade Sati: sleep, simple food and a daily walk are the best remedies, and they are free.

Ketu in your 5th turns the mind toward study and spiritual practice. Fire Moons burn bright in a Mars month: cool food, enough water and an early night protect your mood.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 6th for your 5th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 6th on 22 November. Virgo is Venus’s weakest sign, so until the 22nd the month favours romance, play and creative pleasure, at a gentle pace; after that, kindness in daily routines and small acts of care come more easily.

Jupiter in your 4th all month: comfort at home matters more than romance.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 6th on 13 November, so routine work, schedules and health appointments start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Saturn in your 11th: one of Saturn’s most rewarding transits: patient gains.

Ketu in your 4th can make home feel unsettled; small daily rituals help. Earth Moons do best with routine: a daily walk and regular meals will keep the festival weeks from wearing you down.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 5th for your 4th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 5th on 22 November. Leo

For Leo Moons the month is crowded and bright. Jupiter is already in your sign, Mars arrives on 12 November and Ketu sits there too: a lot of fire in the 1st house, best spent on purpose rather than on temper.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 3rd for your 2nd on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 3rd on 22 November. With Mars joining Jupiter from 12 November, feelings run warm — say what you want plainly and kindly.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 3rd on 13 November, so messages, paperwork and short trips start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Saturn in your 8th (ashtama Shani) asks for steady health habits and no shortcuts with debts or medicines.

Ketu in your sign keeps you a little detached from your own image. Fire Moons burn bright in a Mars month: cool food, enough water and an early night protect your mood.

Until 12 November Mars is debilitated in your 8th (shared money, in-laws and deep change), so energy there may feel scattered or touchy; from the 12th it is stronger in Leo, in your 9th.

Saturn in your 4th (a dhaiya) asks you to keep home calm and to look after parents with a plan.

Ketu in your 9th questions inherited beliefs. Fire Moons burn bright in a Mars month: cool food, enough water and an early night protect your mood.

Makara · Moon sign · November 2026

Capricorn

Capricorn Moons have a month for depth and careful money. Three planets meet in your 8th, Mars leaves your 7th on 12 November, and the Sun lights your 11th, one of its best houses, from the 16th.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 10th for your 9th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 10th on 22 November. Virgo is Venus’s weakest sign, so until the 22nd the month favours shared ideals, travel together and gratitude, at a gentle pace; after that, grace at work and good relations with seniors come more easily.

Jupiter in your 8th all month: deepen trust; avoid jealousy.

Mars joining Jupiter there from 12 November can stir old feelings; talk them through rather than act on them.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 10th on 13 November, so projects and decisions at work start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Mars moves into your 8th on 12 November: drive with care, avoid risky lending, and give strong feelings a healthy outlet.

The Sun moves into your 11th on 16 November: gains and helpful seniors — one of the Sun’s best houses.

Money. Jupiter in your 8th: paperwork, taxes and inheritance need care. Saturn in your 3rd: skills, writing, sales and technical work pay. Rahu in your 2nd: sudden money in and out; avoid speculation.

Health and energy

Until 12 November Mars is debilitated in your 7th (partner, marriage and agreements), so energy there may feel scattered or touchy; from the 12th it is stronger in Leo, in your 8th.

Saturn in your 3rd: a favourable Saturn: courage and steady self-effort.

Ketu in your 8th favours research and inner work. Earth Moons do best with routine: a daily walk and regular meals will keep the festival weeks from wearing you down.

Kumbha · Moon sign · November 2026

Aquarius

For Aquarius Moons, partnership is the headline. Jupiter, Mars and Ketu gather in your 7th, while Saturn, your ruler, works through the last phase of Sade Sati in your 2nd — slowly, and without hurry.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 9th for your 8th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 9th on 22 November. Virgo is Venus’s weakest sign, so until the 22nd the month favours deep feelings, trust and shared money, at a gentle pace; after that, shared ideals, travel together and gratitude come more easily.

Jupiter in your 7th all month: a strong window for marriage or commitment. Few months are better for love questions, so ask the real ones.

With Mars joining Jupiter from 12 November, feelings run warm — say what you want plainly and kindly.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 9th on 13 November, so travel, visas and dealings with teachers start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Mars moves into your 7th on 12 November: partners and clients become more direct. Agree on the goal before you argue about the method.

The Sun moves into your 10th on 16 November: recognition at work — one of the Sun’s best houses.

Money. Jupiter in your 7th: good business partners and contracts. Saturn in your 2nd: budget tightly; clear debts. Rahu in your 1st: bold moves; check facts twice.

Health and energy

Until 12 November Mars is debilitated in your 6th (work routines, health habits and competition), so energy there may feel scattered or touchy; from the 12th it is stronger in Leo, in your 7th.

Saturn in your 2nd is the last phase of Sade Sati: sleep, simple food and a daily walk are the best remedies, and they are free.

Ketu in your 7th asks you to be fully present with your partner. Air Moons feel scattered when busy: keep screens out of the bedroom and give yourself one unhurried morning a week.

Meena · Moon sign · November 2026

Pisces

Pisces Moons can work their way through almost anything this month. Jupiter, your ruler, and from 12 November Mars stand in your 6th, the house of effort — useful company while Saturn, at the peak of Sade Sati, asks for patience.

Love

Venus, still retrograde, leaves your 8th for your 7th on 6 November, turns direct there on 14 November and returns to your 8th on 22 November. Virgo is Venus’s weakest sign, so until the 22nd the month favours partnership and marriage talk, at a gentle pace; after that, deep feelings, trust and shared money come more easily.

Jupiter in your 6th all month: help each other practically.

Work and money

Mercury turns direct in your 8th on 13 November, so taxes, insurance and shared accounts start moving again. From mid-month, sign what you have already reread.

Mars moves into your 6th on 12 November, one of its best houses: you can beat deadlines, rivals and old health niggles with effort.

The Sun moves into your 9th on 16 November: teachers, father figures and long-range plans.

Money. Jupiter in your 6th: win through steady work; avoid new debt. Saturn in your 1st: hard, serious work; results come late but last. Rahu in your 12th: watch spending; foreign work possible.

Health and energy

Until 12 November Mars is debilitated in your 5th (romance, children and creative work), so energy there may feel scattered or touchy; from the 12th it is stronger in Leo, in your 6th.

Saturn in your 1st is the peak of Sade Sati: sleep, simple food and a daily walk are the best remedies, and they are free.

Ketu in your 6th helps you shake off rivals and old ailments. Water Moons absorb the mood of the house: warm, simple meals and a little quiet after the Diwali crowds will help.

Feature · Work and money

Mars leaves debilitation

Work and courage in late November: on 12 Nov the planet of drive leaves the sign where it is weakest, and the second half of the month asks for brave, well-aimed effort.

Feature · Work and money

Eight weeks in the crab

Mars entered Cancer on 18 September. Cancer is the sign of its debilitation (neecha): the classical image is a warrior asked to fight in water. Watery, emotional Cancer muffles Mars’s directness, and many people felt it as effort without traction — tasks that dragged, tempers that flared at home, plans that would not quite start.

On 12 Nov at 20:19, Mars crosses into Leo. Leo is ruled by the Sun, a friend of Mars, and it is a fire sign like Mars’s own Aries. The texts do not count Leo as exaltation — that is Capricorn — but a friendly fire sign is a very different field to fight on.

A crowded sign

Leo already holds Jupiter (since 31 October) and Ketu. Mars passes Ketu on 15 Nov and Jupiter on 16 Nov. Mars with Jupiter is Guru–Mangala yoga, read as courage guided by judgement — good for leadership, teaching, law, sport and any work where conviction must be backed by knowledge. Ketu beside them adds intensity and a need for purpose: effort spent on something that matters, rather than on winning arguments.

How to use late November at work

  • Restart what stalled. Projects that lost energy from late September can be picked up again — after Mercury turns direct on 13 November.
  • Ask, propose, apply. The second half of the month favours visible initiative. Prepare well; Jupiter rewards preparation.
  • Pick one hard thing. Mars works best on a single, clear target. Write it down on the 12th and finish it by the 30th.
  • Keep the heat out of meetings. Three planets in a fire sign can make people blunt. Firm on substance, warm in tone.
  • Money: build, don’t gamble. Use the energy to earn and to clear debts, not for speculation — Ketu dislikes shortcuts.

Planet of the month

Mangal

Mars in Jyotish is the commander of the planetary court: courage, energy, land, brothers, surgery, sport and the will to protect.

RulesAries and Scorpio
ExaltedCapricorn (deepest at 28°)
DebilitatedCancer (deepest at 28°)
MoolatrikonaAries, 0°–12°
FriendsSun, Moon, Jupiter
EnemyMercury
DayTuesday (Mangalvar)
Special aspectsthe 4th and 8th houses from itself, as well as the 7th
Dasha7 years in Vimshottari
Nakshatras ruledMrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta

In the body Mars governs blood, muscle and marrow; in life, the energy to act. Its gifts are courage, decisiveness and protectiveness; its excesses are anger, haste and accidents. A strong Mars makes engineers, surgeons, soldiers, athletes and builders — and good friends in a crisis.

This month

Debilitated in Cancer until 12 Nov, then in Leo, a friend’s sign, beside Jupiter and Ketu. It stays in Leo until it turns retrograde on 10 January 2027 and backs into Cancer — the subject of a later Lens.

Mars and marriage

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is the classical Manglik placement. It is common, it has many cancellations, and it describes temperament rather than fate: a partner with matching energy, or simply mutual patience, is the traditional answer.

Working with Mars, simply

  • Move your body every day — Mars’s energy needs an outlet.
  • Keep promises to yourself; Mars respects follow-through.
  • Do one brave, honest thing a week.
  • On Tuesdays, many keep a simple fast or recite the Hanuman Chalisa — a practice, not a bargain.

Nakshatra of the month

Krittika

The Pleiades, the star of fire — and the star of this month’s full Moon, exact at 20:24 on 24 Nov.

Span26°40′ Aries – 10° Taurus
Rulerthe Sun
DeityAgni, the sacred fire
Symbola blade, or a flame
Naturemixed (mishra) in muhurta

Nakshatra of the month · Krittika

Krittika means “the cutters”. It is the third of the twenty-seven nakshatras and, in the oldest Vedic lists, the first: the year once began with it. Its six visible stars are the six mothers who nursed Kartikeya, the young war-god — which is why he is called Kartikeya, and why the month of his star is Kartika.

Its deity is Agni, the fire present in every hearth and every offering. Krittika is fire that cooks and purifies: sharp discernment, honesty, protectiveness and the courage to cut away what is false. People with the Moon here are often direct, principled and fiercely loyal, warm beneath a sometimes sharp surface.

The two halves of Krittika

Its first quarter lies in Aries, ruled by Mars: fire on fire, quick and brave. The other three lie in Taurus, ruled by Venus, where the Moon is exalted: steady fire, the hearth rather than the blaze. This month’s full Moon falls in the Taurus half.

Krittika this month

The Moon is in Krittika on 23 Nov and 24 Nov (see the day-by-day pages for the exact hours). Its full Moon on Kartik Purnima is a classic night for lamps — Agni’s own star, honoured with fire.

Fire that cooks is a blessing; fire that spreads is a warning. Krittika is the art of knowing the difference.

Panchang essentials

How to read tithi and nakshatra

The panchang — “five limbs” — describes each day by five measures of the Sun and Moon. Two of them, tithi and nakshatra, do most of the work.

Tithi: the lunar day

A tithi is each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month: fifteen in the bright half (Shukla paksha), from Pratipada to Purnima, and fifteen in the dark half (Krishna paksha), ending at Amavasya. Because the Moon’s speed changes, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 20 to 27 hours, and it rarely begins at sunrise.

That is why panchangs name the tithi running at sunrise — the udaya tithi — and give the time it ends. Most observances use the sunrise tithi; some use the tithi at another time of day: the evening (pradosh) for Dhanteras and Diwali, the afternoon for Bhai Dooj, moonrise for Karwa Chauth.

Occasionally a tithi is skipped or doubled

If a tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, no day is named after it (a kshaya tithi) — exactly what happens to Prabodhini Ekadashi this month, from 07:16 on 20 Nov to 06:32 on 21 Nov. If it spans two sunrises, two days carry its name: Shukla Navami covers both 18 and 19 November.

Nakshatra: the Moon’s star

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. The Moon passes through one roughly every day, so the nakshatra changes about daily too, at a different time from the tithi. Your birth nakshatra — the one the Moon occupied when you were born — sets your Vimshottari dasha and is the heart of Guna Milan.

A worked example: Diwali, 8 November

LimbAt sunrise, New Delhi
VaraRavivara (Sunday), ruled by the Sun
TithiKrishna Chaturdashi, till 11:28; then Amavasya
NakshatraSwati, till 07:24, 9 Nov
YogaAyushman
Moonin Libra

Read it like this: the day dawns in Chaturdashi (so the morning is Narak Chaturdashi), Amavasya arrives before noon and holds the evening (so the evening is Lakshmi Puja), and the Moon is in Swati all day.

The other three limbs, briefly

Vara

The weekday, each ruled by a planet: Sunday the Sun, Monday the Moon, Tuesday Mars, Wednesday Mercury, Thursday Jupiter, Friday Venus, Saturday Saturn. In the panchang the day runs from sunrise to sunrise.

Yoga

One of 27 combinations of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti. A few — Vyatipata and Vaidhriti above all — are traditionally avoided for beginnings.

Karana

Half a tithi; there are eleven, which repeat. Vishti, also called Bhadra, is the one avoided for auspicious work.

The tithis and what they favour

TithiGroupClassically favours
Pratipada, Shashthi, EkadashiNanda (joy)celebrations, new clothes, festivities
Dwitiya, Saptami, DwadashiBhadra (well-being)steady work, buildings, journeys
Tritiya, Ashtami, TrayodashiJaya (victory)competition, effort, overcoming obstacles
Chaturthi, Navami, ChaturdashiRikta (empty)clearing, cutting, ending — avoided for beginnings
Panchami, Dashami, PurnimaPurna (full)all auspicious work

Amavasya stands apart: a day for ancestors, quiet and charity, rather than for beginnings. The groups are a guide, not a rule book; the festivals themselves often fall on rikta tithis — Ganesh Chaturthi and Maha Shivaratri among them.

Guide

Reading your own month with Your day

A Moon-sign page speaks to one person in twelve. Your own chart speaks to you. Here is how to read November from it, in ten minutes.

  1. Make your free kundli at sunyra.ai/kundli with your birth date, time and place, and choose “Save this chart”.
  2. Open Your day at sunyra.ai/today. It reads each day from your chart: the Moon’s house from your Moon (chandra bala), the day’s star from your birth star (tara bala), your running dasha and any exact planetary contacts.
  3. Look at the four areas — love, family, friends and work. Each is marked supported, steady or take gently, with the reason in plain words under “Why”.
  4. Check the week ahead. The day tabs show the next five days; plan the important conversations for the supported ones.
  5. Note your dasha. If a new antardasha or pratyantardasha starts this month, Your day tells you; that is often when a month changes character.

Use the good days for beginnings and the gentle days for finishing. Both are useful.

Your day is calculated in your browser from your chart; nothing about your birth details is sent anywhere unless you choose to save the chart to your account.

Before you go

A calm month, well used

If November has one lesson, it is about timing without anxiety. The planets that were reviewing — Mercury and Venus — turn forward in the second week. The planet that was struggling — Mars — finds firmer ground on the 12th. The festivals bring families together, and the wedding season brings new ones into being. None of it asks you to be afraid; all of it rewards a little attention.

Light the lamps. Settle the accounts. Ask the honest question in love, and take the brave step at work after the 12th. And on the days marked “take gently”, do exactly that.

Until December,
Sunyra

Calculations. Every position, ingress, station, conjunction, lunation, tithi, nakshatra, sunrise, sunset and rising-sign window in this issue was computed with the Sunyra engine (built on astronomy-engine and verified against NASA JPL Horizons) for New Delhi, 28.61° N, 77.21° E. Vedic positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa and mean nodes. Times are computed for New Delhi (UTC+5:30); for your city, see Panchang. Festival dates follow their classical rules (tithi at sunrise, pradosh, aparahna or sunset as each requires); where almanacs differ we say so.
