In short: The Sun in Capricorn places the soul planet in Saturn's earthy sign — the sign of the Sun's enemy. It tends to give discipline, ambition, responsibility and a self that is built slowly and becomes more confident with age. Which life area it colours depends on the ascendant: the table further down shows each one.

Dignity

The Sun is in an enemy's sign, ruled by Saturn. By BPHS natural relationships the Sun counts Saturn as an enemy, while Saturn counts the Sun as an enemy — mutual enemies. In practice it pulls against Saturn, whose placement shows where its energy is finally spent.

The Vedic view

Capricorn is a movable earth sign ruled by Saturn, the Sun's enemy, and the father–son tension between the two runs through the tradition. Classical descriptions of the Sun in Capricorn associate it with hard work, practical ambition and sometimes a difficult relationship with authority or the father. The Sun spans the later padas of Uttara Ashadha (its own nakshatra), Shravana and the first half of Dhanishta.

In the sidereal zodiac the Sun enters Capricorn at Makar Sankranti, around 14 January, and stays until mid-February.

Character and temperament

Sun signifies identity, authority, the father and the will to shine; Capricorn is practical, ambitious and enduring. Capricorn's movable quality means the placement starts things, moves fast and likes initiative.

Strengths: discipline, persistence, responsibility and practical ambition. Its deeper gift is moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right.

Challenges: heaviness, self-doubt and over-seriousness. Left unchecked, it slides toward pride that cannot admit a mistake.

Love and marriage

In relationships it is reliable and committed; warmth must be cultivated. Generally the Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time. Here the style is committed, responsible love. Its earth element shows love through reliability, touch and practical care. The Sun shows pride and the need for respect, so in love it describes what the person must feel honoured for. For Cancer rising this is the Sun in the 7th, the house of the spouse, as lord of the 2nd. Romance is in focus for Virgo rising, where Capricorn is the 5th. As a rule, the Sun wants admiration and loyalty from a partner; the relationship works when both people can shine without competing.

Career and money

At work it favours administration, government, engineering and long-term careers. Professionally, the Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name. The movable sign gives a working style that starts things, moves fast and likes initiative. Career is front and centre for Aries rising, where Capricorn is the 10th house and the Sun sits there with directional strength (dig bala) as lord of the 5th. Across the twelve ascendants it scores highest for Aries rising and Leo rising and is most demanding for Pisces rising and Gemini rising. Where money is concerned, money tends to follow authority and position. It falls in the money houses for Sagittarius rising (2nd) and Pisces rising (11th).

Health and wellbeing

For wellbeing, tradition favours warmth and rest from duty. Traditionally the Sun governs vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone and Capricorn governs the knees, joints and bones. A helpful habit: morning sunlight and keeping one promise a day without exception. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

The dispositor

Saturn rules Capricorn, so Saturn is the Sun's dispositor. Think of Saturn as the manager the Sun reports to here: Saturn's placement decides where the Sun's work in Capricorn ends up. If Saturn is at the same time in a sign the Sun rules (Leo), the two are in parivartana, an exchange of signs, a strong mutual link.

By nakshatra

The degree decides the nakshatra, and each brings its own lord into the Sun's story:

  • 0°–10°: the Sun in Uttara Ashadha, the Sun's own nakshatra, so the placement is concentrated; deity the Vishvedevas, the universal gods; its gift is final victory through integrity and its shadow stubbornness.

  • 10°–23°20′: the Sun in Shravana, ruled by the Moon, a friend to the Sun; deity Vishnu, the preserver; for money it earns through knowledge and reputation.

  • 23°20′–30°: the Sun in Dhanishta, ruled by Mars, a friend to the Sun; deity the eight Vasus, gods of the elements; in love it is generous and rhythmic but can stay busy rather than intimate.

By rising sign

Lordship changes with the rising sign, so the table below shows where the Sun in Capricorn sits and what it governs in each case.

Aries 10th 5th dig bala, supportive, with conditions
Taurus 9th 4th mixed
Gemini 8th 3rd demanding but workable
Cancer 7th 2nd mixed
Leo 6th 1st lagna lord, supportive, with conditions
Virgo 5th 12th mixed

Scorpio 3rd 10th mixed
Sagittarius 2nd 9th supportive, with conditions
Capricorn 1st 8th mixed
Aquarius 12th 7th demanding but workable

If the Sun is between 0° and 3°20′ Capricorn, it is vargottama (same sign in the navamsa), a classical sign of steadiness. Because the sidereal zodiac is now about 24° behind the tropical one, the Sun in sidereal Capricorn is often in tropical Aquarius in a Western chart; both are valid within their own system.

Sun transiting Capricorn

Time in the sign: about a month in each sign. From the Moon, the transit is classed as good for those with the Moon in Scorpio, Leo, Aries and Pisces (Phaladeepika ch. 26), subject to vedha and ashtakavarga.

The Western view

In Western astrology the Sun in Capricorn is peregrine. Tropical Capricorn begins at the December solstice. Modern astrologers describe it as ambitious, disciplined and responsible.
