The house of past merit

Why do some people seem to arrive with a gift: a quick mind, a natural talent, a kind of luck that was there from the start? Vedic astrology has a beautiful name for it, purva punya, past merit. And it reads it from the fifth house. The fifth house is children, intelligence, learning, creativity and romance. In this video: what the fifth house means, why it is one of the most fortunate houses in the chart, where its lord sends your talent, what each planet brings here, how astrologers handle the question of children, and when the fifth house comes alive.

What the fifth house means

The classical texts give the fifth house children, intelligence, learning, mantras, discrimination, and the fruits of past merit. Its Sanskrit names say it plainly: Putra, children; Vidya, learning; Buddhi, intelligence; and Purva Punya, past merit. The fifth is a trikona, a trine. With the first and the ninth, it forms the triangle of fortune, and its lord is always considered auspicious. It is also the ninth from the ninth, the fortune of fortune.

Its significator is Jupiter. And the fifth house is about children of the mind as well as of the body: art, ideas and students. In the West, the Hellenistic astrologers called the fifth place Good Fortune, and modern astrologers read it as creativity, self-expression, play and romance.

Mind, mantra and romance

Classical texts also give the fifth house mantra: sacred sound, and the mind concentrated in it. A strong fifth house, especially with Jupiter's support, is traditionally read as a natural gift for prayer, study and contemplation. In modern language, it is the house of absorption, the state in which we lose track of time doing something we love. The fifth is also romance: falling in love, courtship, the pleasure of the early stage. Committed partnership belongs to the seventh.

In Vedic astrology, the love in a love marriage is often read from a connection between the fifth and seventh lords.

Where your talent flows

The lord of the fifth house shows where intelligence and creativity flow, and where fortune gathers. In the first house, it gives a creative, intelligent personality. In the ninth, one of the most fortunate combinations: the lords of two trines together. In the tenth, a career using creativity or teaching. In the eleventh, gains through intelligence or children.

And in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, creativity that must work through obstacles.

Planets in the fifth house

Now the planets in the fifth house. Jupiter, the natural significator, brings wisdom, learning and blessings through children, though some texts note that a significator in its own house can delay what it signifies. Mercury gives a sharp, studious mind. Venus, artistic talent and romance. The Moon, an imaginative mind and a fondness for children.

The Sun, intelligence and leadership in creative work. Mars gives a competitive intelligence and a love of sport. Saturn, a serious mind and creativity that matures slowly. Rahu, unconventional intelligence. And Ketu, an intuitive or spiritual mind.

Astrologers also read the fifth from the Moon, and for children, from Jupiter. When all three point the same way, the theme is considered confirmed.

Children, and when it comes alive

The fifth house is the traditional house of children, read with Jupiter and the D7 divisional chart. But here is the honest part. Astrology does not decide whether or when anyone has children, and fertility is a medical matter. What the fifth house can describe is the relationship with children, with students, and with one's own creative legacy. The fifth house comes to the foreground in the dasha of its lord, of the planets in it, and of Jupiter.

Such periods are traditionally linked with study and examinations, creative projects, romance, the education of children, and devotion. As a trine lord, the fifth lord's periods are generally counted among the more fortunate in a chart.
