Life far from home
Will I live abroad? It is one of the most common questions astrologers hear. The tradition does have indicators for travel, work abroad and settling overseas. But they are tendencies, not visas. In this video: the houses of travel, the indicators astrologers look for, the role of Rahu, how a move is timed, and how astrologers tell a life of travel from a life rooted abroad.
The houses of travel
Classical texts link the twelfth house with distant lands and separation from one's birthplace. The ninth house is long journeys, pilgrimage and higher learning, read today for study abroad. The third is short journeys. The seventh is travel, trade and dealings abroad. And in some texts, the eighth is crossing the seas, and the unknown.
The fourth house is home, the homeland and the mother. Here is a neat piece of logic. The twelfth house is the ninth counted from the fourth. So it is read as the fortune of leaving home.
The indicators
What do astrologers look for? The fourth lord in the twelfth, or the twelfth lord in the fourth: distance from the homeland, or a home abroad. The first lord in the twelfth, or the twelfth lord in the first: a life lived partly away from the birthplace. The tenth lord in the twelfth, or links between the tenth and twelfth: work abroad, or with foreign institutions. And the ninth and twelfth lords linked: long journeys with lasting consequences.
Signs matter too. Movable signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, on key houses, and water signs on the ninth or twelfth, are traditionally linked with travel across water. The Moon in the twelfth, or in a movable sign, is read as a restless, adaptable mind.
Rahu, the outsider
And then there is Rahu, the outsider among the planets. In modern practice, Rahu is read as the strongest single indicator of foreign connections: foreign cultures, migration and the unfamiliar. Astrologers look at Rahu in the first, fourth, seventh, ninth, tenth or twelfth, or joined with the lords of those houses. To be honest about it: Rahu's role here is a modern emphasis, rather than a classical rule. But it is very widely used.
And most charts have several of these factors, which is why astrologers look for the overall weight, not any single one.
Timing a move
When does a move happen? The dashas of the twelfth lord, of Rahu, of the ninth lord, or of planets in the twelfth, are the periods most often examined for travel and relocation. Transits add the shorter windows. Saturn's transit over the fourth or the twelfth from the Moon is often associated with a change of residence. Its passage over the twelfth from the Moon begins Sade Sati.
And the transits of Rahu and Ketu over the fourth and tenth, or the first and seventh, are read as times of change in home and career.
Travel or settlement?
Astrologers distinguish a life with much travel from a life rooted abroad. Strong third and ninth house factors, with a stable fourth, are read as travel that returns home. Strong twelfth house factors linked to the first or fourth, with Rahu involved, are read as settlement. Many modern lives are a mix: studying abroad, returning, and leaving again. And the periods change the picture over a lifetime.
Western astrology, for its part, links long journeys with the ninth house, Jupiter and Sagittarius.
What a chart cannot do
One honest word. Immigration depends on laws, qualifications, money and opportunity. A chart can describe a temperament drawn to distant places, and periods associated with change. It cannot predict a visa, and it is no reason to make or abandon a plan. Going abroad is neither good nor bad in astrology.
Many people thrive far from where they were born. To see your own twelfth, ninth and fourth houses, and where Rahu sits, make a free kundli on sunyra.ai. And if you would like your work and career read in depth, Sunyra's Career and Wealth Report on sunyra.ai does that, from your own birth details.
Recap
To recap. The twelfth house is distant lands, the ninth long journeys, the fourth home. The twelfth is the ninth from the fourth: the fortune of leaving home. Look at the links between the lords, at Rahu, and at movable and water signs. Dashas and transits time the move.
And a chart describes a pull, never a visa.
