The most important point in your chart
If you know only your Sun sign, you know one part of your chart. If you know your Moon sign, you know your mind. But to read a chart at all, an astrologer needs one more thing: your lagna, the ascendant. It is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The lagna is the starting point of the whole chart.
Every house is counted from it, and it decides which planets rule the good and difficult houses for you. In this video: what the lagna is, why your birth time matters so much, what the first house means, the lord of the lagna, and a quick portrait of all twelve rising signs, with the planet that works best for each.
What the lagna is
As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise one after another over the eastern horizon, like the Sun does each morning. Each sign takes about two hours to rise. So the lagna changes about every two hours, and the exact degree changes every few minutes. That is why astrologers ask for your birth time. Two people born on the same day, in the same city, but four hours apart, have different lagnas, so every house in their charts is different.
If your birth time is uncertain, your lagna may be uncertain too, and a careful astrologer will tell you so. In Greek astrology, the rising degree was called the horoskopos, the hour-marker. That is where the word horoscope comes from.
The first house
The lagna is also the first house, called tanu bhava, the house of the body. The classical texts give it the body itself, its form and strength, along with temperament, happiness and sorrow, knowledge, and the general course of life. It is the only house that is both a kendra, an angle that gives strength, and a trikona, a trine that gives fortune. That is why the first house is considered the most important house in the chart. In Western astrology, the ascendant is read as your persona: your style of approach, first impressions, and the lens through which you meet life.
Many astrologers put it like this. The Sun is who you are, the Moon is what you need, and the ascendant is how you go about it.
The lord of the lagna
The planet that rules your rising sign is your chart ruler, the lagna lord. In Vedic astrology, the lagna lord is always treated as a friend to you, whatever its nature. A strong lagna lord, well placed by sign, in a good house, and free of affliction, is traditionally read as vitality and the ability to direct your own life. And the house where it sits shows where your life's attention naturally goes. Vedic astrologers also read the chart from the Moon, called Chandra lagna, and sometimes from the Sun.
When all three agree on a theme, it is considered strongly confirmed.
Aries to Virgo rising
Now the twelve rising signs, with the planet that works best for each. Aries rising, ruled by Mars: energetic, direct and self-starting. Life is met head on, and the lessons are patience and pacing. Taurus rising, ruled by Venus: steady, patient and grounded, with a love of beauty and comfort. Saturn becomes the yogakaraka, a classic strength for career and fortune built over time.
Gemini rising, ruled by Mercury: curious, communicative and adaptable. Venus, ruling the fifth house, is a key friend. Cancer rising, ruled by the Moon: caring, protective, intuitive and family-centred. Mars becomes the yogakaraka. Leo rising, ruled by the Sun: dignified, warm, confident and generous.
Mars again becomes the yogakaraka. Virgo rising, ruled by Mercury: modest, precise, analytical and service-minded. Mercury rules both the first and the tenth, so identity and work are closely tied.
Libra to Pisces rising
Libra rising, ruled by Venus: gracious, diplomatic, sociable and fair-minded. Saturn becomes the yogakaraka, and is exalted in Libra itself. Scorpio rising, ruled by Mars: intense, private, determined and perceptive. The Moon and Jupiter are key friends, and the Sun is strong for career. Sagittarius rising, ruled by Jupiter: optimistic, principled, adventurous and generous.
The Sun and Mars are key friends. Capricorn rising, ruled by Saturn: disciplined, ambitious and responsible, and it matures well with age. Venus becomes the yogakaraka. Aquarius rising, also ruled by Saturn: independent, principled, humane and original. Venus again becomes the yogakaraka.
And Pisces rising, ruled by Jupiter: gentle, compassionate, imaginative and receptive. The Moon and Mars are key friends.
