Two Moons

In Vedic matchmaking, the Moon is the starting point. Its sign and its nakshatra feed every part of the traditional match. So when two people ask whether they are compatible, the first thing an astrologer compares is their two Moons. In this video: how each of the twelve Moon signs loves, the six ways two Moon signs can meet, what the Vedic and Western traditions each say about them, and what the Moon signs alone cannot tell you.

How each Moon loves

First, the twelve emotional styles. An Aries Moon has quick, direct feelings that want to act at once, and needs room to act, and honesty. A Taurus Moon is steady and sensual, and needs patience and reliability. A Gemini Moon processes feelings by talking, and needs conversation and variety. A Cancer Moon feels deeply and protectively, and needs reassurance and a shared home.

A Leo Moon is warm and proud, and needs warmth and appreciation. A Virgo Moon shows love through helpful acts, and needs practical care and calm. A Libra Moon seeks harmony and fairness. A Scorpio Moon is intense and private, and values loyalty above all. It needs trust and depth.

A Sagittarius Moon is open and optimistic, and needs freedom and shared adventures. A Capricorn Moon is reserved and responsible, and grows through commitment. It needs steadiness and respect. An Aquarius Moon is independent and friendly, and needs space. And a Pisces Moon is gentle and intuitive, and needs gentleness and imagination.

Two Vedic scores

Now, how are two Moon signs compared? In the Vedic match, the signs alone decide two scores. Bhakoot, worth seven points, depends on how far apart the two signs are. It scores zero, a Bhakoot dosha, when the signs are two and twelve, five and nine, or six and eight apart. Every other pair scores the full seven.

Graha Maitri, worth five points, depends on the lords of the two signs, and how they regard each other in the natural friendships of Parashara. Two signs with the same lord score the full five. And many authorities count a Bhakoot dosha as cancelled when the two lords are the same, or are friends.

Same, next door, two apart

There are seven ways two Moon signs can meet. First, the same sign. Two Moons in the same sign understand each other's emotional language instinctively. The gift is recognition. The risk is shared blind spots.

Second, signs next to each other, two and twelve apart. They have little in common by element or mode, so feelings are expressed in quite different ways. That can be complementary, but it needs patience, and Bhakoot counts it as a dosha. Third, signs two apart, the third and eleventh from each other. They are of compatible elements, a sextile in Western terms: an easy, friendly link in which conversation comes naturally.

Square, trine, quincunx, opposite

Fourth, signs three apart, the fourth and tenth. They share a mode but differ in element, a square in Western terms. That can create friction, and, handled well, real motivation. Fifth, signs four apart, the fifth and ninth. They share an element, a trine, and feel naturally at ease.

Yet Ashtakoota counts this pair as a Bhakoot dosha. It is a clear example of how the two traditions weigh things differently. Sixth, signs five apart, the sixth and eighth, a quincunx. Emotional needs can feel out of step, and Bhakoot counts it as a dosha. Many couples with this pairing do well.

It asks for conscious adjustment, rather than assumption. And finally, opposite signs, seven apart. They are a natural pair, with complementary elements, the same mode, and a strong attraction of opposites. Ashtakoota counts it as good. The task is to treat differences as balance, rather than opposition.

What the signs cannot tell you

But here is the most important point. The Moon signs supply only part of a match. Of Ashtakoota's thirty-six points, twelve come from Bhakoot and Graha Maitri. Twenty-one, including Nadi, the most heavily weighted, depend on the two Moon nakshatras. That is why two couples with the same pair of Moon signs can score very differently.

And astrologers also compare the two whole charts: the seventh houses and their lords, Venus, the navamsa, and Mangal dosha with its cancellations. In Western astrology, too, the Moon is one factor among many in synastry.

Compare your Moons

To compare your own Moons, you need both sets of birth details. The free matching tool on sunyra.ai works out all eight kootas, and every Moon sign has its own page with all twelve pairings. And if you would like both charts read together in depth, Sunyra's Marriage Report on sunyra.ai does that, from both sets of birth details.

Recap

To recap. Each Moon sign loves in its own way, and needs its own things. Two Moon signs meet in one of seven relationships, from the same sign to opposite signs. Bhakoot and Graha Maitri, twelve points, come from the signs. The nakshatras decide even more.

And no sign pairing guarantees a happy marriage, or rules one out. Thank you for watching. Compatibility is built by two people. May yours be built well.
