The commander of the planets
Mars is energy with a direction. Courage, drive, competition, protection, and the willingness to act. In Vedic astrology it is Mangal, which means "the auspicious one". It is the son of the Earth, the commander of the planetary army, and the ruler of land, siblings and strength. Mars can cut, or it can build.
Much depends on whether its fire has somewhere useful to go. In this video: the stories of Mangal, the real red planet, what Mars means in your chart, the truth about Mangal dosha in marriage, Mars in love, career and property, and a first look at the Mars retrograde of twenty twenty-seven.
The stories of Mangal
Mars's names tell its story. Bhauma and Kuja both mean "born of the Earth". Angaraka means "glowing coal". Mangal is the son of Bhumi, the Earth goddess. Two main stories explain his birth.
In one, he is the son of the Earth and Vishnu, born after Vishnu, in his boar form Varaha, lifted the Earth out of the cosmic waters. In the other, Shiva was fighting a demon, a drop of his sweat fell to the ground, and from it a red child was born, whom the Earth raised as her own. The city of Ujjain is still honoured as Mangal's birthplace. In the lists of planetary deities, Mars is linked with Kartikeya, the young commander of the gods' army. It is a fitting pair.
The astronomer Varahamihira calls Mars the general of the planetary court. The Greek and Roman Mars has a similar temper. The month of March is named after him. And the two small moons of Mars are called Phobos and Deimos, fear and dread, after the companions of the Greek war god.
The red planet
The real Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, about half Earth's width. It takes six hundred and eighty-seven days to go round the Sun, and its red colour comes from iron oxide, rust, in its dust. It has polar ice caps, a canyon system that would stretch across a continent, and Olympus Mons, the largest volcano known in the solar system, about twenty-two kilometres high. Seen from Earth, Mars usually spends six or seven weeks in a sign. But roughly every twenty-six months it turns retrograde, for two to two and a half months.
In those years it can stay in one sign for half a year or more, which is why astrologers watch Mars stations closely.
What Mars means
In Jyotish, Mars signifies courage, strength and initiative: the will to act and to defend. It signifies siblings, especially younger ones. As the Earth's son, it signifies land, property and buildings. It signifies competition, rivals and disputes. And it signifies technical skill: engineering, surgery, machinery, police and military work, and sport.
Mars rules two signs, Aries and Scorpio. It is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer. It rules three nakshatras: Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta. Its day is Tuesday, its colour is red, and its dasha lasts seven years. Mars also has special aspects.
Every planet looks at the seventh house from itself. Mars also looks at the fourth and the eighth. That is why astrologers always ask where Mars is looking, not only where it sits.
Mangal dosha: the truth
Now the part that worries families most: Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha. Traditionally, a person is called manglik when Mars sits in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house, with the second house added in many South Indian traditions. It is counted from the ascendant, and often also from the Moon and from Venus. Here is what most people are never told. Counted this common way, a large share of all people have some form of it.
The idea comes from later texts and regional practice, not from the oldest classical text, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. And the same tradition lists many cancellations. Mars in its own sign or its exaltation sign. Mars aspected by Jupiter. Mars in certain signs for certain houses.
Or a matching Mars placement in the partner's chart. So Mangal dosha is one traditional factor in matching, with many cancellations. It is not a curse, and it should never, on its own, decide a marriage. On Sunyra, the free kundli checks it together with its cancellations.
Mars in love
In love, Mars describes desire and how you pursue it, and also how you fight. It shows the pace you move at, and what makes you feel alive. Two strong Mars placements can be passionate, and also combative. In Western astrology, Mars contacts between two charts are read as attraction with friction. The classical advice is not to fear Mars in marriage, but to look for balance: a partner whose energy meets yours.
Couples who exercise together, build things together, or share a cause, often give their two Mars a common direction.
Career, property and money
In career, Mars is the planet of action and competition. It favours engineering, surgery and medicine, the armed services and police, sport, construction and real estate, manufacturing, and any business that needs nerve. In Jyotish, Mars has its directional strength in the tenth house, the house of career. A Mars connected to the tenth house is a classic signature of a career built by effort. And because Mars is the son of the Earth, it is the planet astrologers look at for land and property.
A well-placed Mars, or a Mars that rules good houses, is read as the courage to buy, build and own. For Cancer and Leo ascendants, Mars rules both an angle and a trine, which makes it a yogakaraka, one of the most helpful planets in the chart.
Mars retrograde 2027: a first look
Right now, Mars is in Cancer, its sign of debilitation, until the twelfth of November twenty twenty-six. Then it moves into Leo. And early next year, Mars turns retrograde. Here are the dates, in universal time. Mars stations retrograde on the tenth of January twenty twenty-seven, in sidereal Leo.
It is closest to Earth and brightest around its opposition on the nineteenth of February. On the ninth of March, the tenth in India, it moves back into Cancer. And it stations direct on the first of April. That is eighty-one days of retrograde, near the long end of Mars's range. Astrologers link Mars retrograde with frustrated drive: shorter tempers, stalled plans, old conflicts coming back, and energy turned inward.
The tradition's advice is to redirect rather than force. Finish and repair, exercise, cool down before you reply, and postpone aggressive new ventures, quarrels and lawsuits where you can. We will make a full video on it before it begins.
