The top of the chart
What work were you born to do? Will you rise? When will your career change? For these questions, astrologers look first at the tenth house. The tenth house is the house of action in the world: career, profession, status, reputation, authority, and the contribution you make to society.
It sits at the very top of the chart, where the Sun stands at noon. In this video: what the tenth house means, what its lord says about the kind of work that suits you, what each planet in the tenth house brings, the classic yogas for success, and the transits astrologers watch for career change.
What the tenth house means
Vedic astrology calls it karma bhava, the house of action, and rajya, the house of the kingdom. The classical texts give it profession, honour, authority, command, and the deeds a person performs. It is the most powerful of the four angles. A planet here is strong and visible, and the Sun and Mars have their directional strength here. It is also an upachaya, a house of growth, which means it improves with effort, and even difficult planets placed here can give drive and achievement.
Interestingly, the tenth house has four significators: the Sun for authority, Mercury for skill and business, Jupiter for fortune and status, and Saturn for work and service. That reflects how many kinds of career there are.
The tenth lord
The lord of the tenth house shows the kind of work that suits you, and where your career energy flows. In the first house, it gives a self-made career. In the ninth, the classic combination of work and purpose, called dharma karmadhipati yoga. In the seventh, a career in partnership, or with the public. In the eleventh, gains through work.
In the sixth, service, competition or healing. And in the twelfth, work abroad, or behind the scenes.
Planets in the tenth house
Now the planets in the tenth house. The Sun has directional strength here: authority, leadership, and government or public roles. One of the strongest career placements. The Moon gives a public career, popularity, and work with people or care, and career changes are common. Mars also has directional strength here: drive, ambition, technical or leadership roles, engineering, the armed forces and sport.
Mercury gives careers in communication, commerce, analysis, writing or teaching. Jupiter gives respected roles in teaching, law, finance or advice. Venus gives careers in the arts, beauty, hospitality or diplomacy. Saturn gives long, steady careers in administration, service or structure: a slow rise, and lasting results. Rahu brings ambition, a sudden rise, and unconventional, foreign or technology careers.
And Ketu gives a vocation more than a career: spiritual, or highly technical work.
Raja yoga: the combinations for success
The tenth lord also forms the most famous combinations in Vedic astrology, the raja yogas. A raja yoga forms when the lord of an angle, especially the tenth, connects with the lord of a trine, especially the ninth: by sitting together, by aspect, or by exchanging signs. Astrologers read it as status and success, the meeting of effort and fortune. But remember, a yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. A raja yoga in a chart is a promise of potential.
The dasha decides when it opens, and effort decides how far it goes.
When will my career change?
For timing, astrologers watch transits over the tenth house, counted from the Moon or the lagna. Jupiter's transit of the tenth is watched for career changes and recognition. Saturn's transit of the tenth from the Moon is often a demanding period, bringing heavy responsibility at work, and often, in the end, real authority. And in Western practice, Saturn crossing the Midheaven is read as a career peak, or a turning point. As always, it is the agreement of the dasha and the transit that matters most.
Recap
To recap. The tenth house is career, status and action: the top of the chart, where the Sun stands at noon. It is the strongest angle and a house of growth. Its lord shows the work that suits you, the planets in it colour your career, and the tenth lord with the ninth lord forms raja yoga. Jupiter and Saturn's transits over it mark the turning points.
