In short: With Capricorn rising, the chart begins in Saturn's movable earth sign: a disciplined, ambitious, responsible temperament that matures well with age. Venus becomes the yogakaraka, ruling the 5th and 10th.

| Yogakaraka | Venus (rules an angle and a trine) |

| Nakshatras of the rising degree | Uttara Ashadha (0°–10°); Shravana (10°–23°20′); Dhanishta (23°20′–30°) |

Temperament and presence
Capricorn rising traditionally gives a serious, composed appearance that often seems older in youth and younger in age. Classical descriptions emphasise diligence, practicality and endurance. Saturn rules the 1st and 2nd, linking identity with family, resources and speech.
Strengths and challenges
Strengths: discipline, patience, practical ambition and reliability.
Challenges: pessimism, rigidity and over-seriousness.
Relationships, work and wellbeing
Relationships: the 7th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon — partners often bring warmth, care and emotional depth.
Work: the 10th is Libra, ruled by Venus, the yogakaraka: careers in the arts, design, law, diplomacy or partnership business.
Wellbeing: Capricorn is the knees and bones; warmth and steady exercise help. Not medical advice.

Which planets help and which challenge
Parashari astrology judges a planet's functional nature for each ascendant from the houses it rules (BPHS ch. 34). The general rules: lords of trines (1st, 5th, 9th) are favourable; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are difficult; the 8th lord is difficult (the Sun and Moon excepted); natural benefics that rule angles lose some benefic quality and natural malefics that rule angles lose some malefic quality; lords of the 2nd and 12th take the results of their associations. Applied to Capricorn rising:
| Planet | Houses ruled | Functional nature (general rules) |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 8th | neutral (BPHS exempts the Sun and Moon from 8th-lord blemish) |
| Moon | 7th | neutral (benefic owning an angle: kendradhipati) · maraka |
| Mars | 4th, 11th | difficult (rules 11th) |
| Mercury | 6th, 9th | mixed (trine lord with a difficult house) |
| Jupiter | 3rd, 12th | difficult (rules 3rd) |
| Venus | 5th, 10th | yogakaraka (best) |
| Saturn | 1st, 2nd | benefic (lagna lord) · maraka |
| Rahu | — | acts through its dispositor and conjunctions |
| Ketu | — | acts through its dispositor and conjunctions |
Venus, ruling the 5th and 10th, is the yogakaraka for Capricorn rising. Mercury rules the 6th and 9th — mixed, often treated as favourable. Mars (4th and 11th) and Jupiter (3rd and 12th) are functionally difficult under the general rules; Jupiter is also debilitated in Capricorn itself.
The lagna lord
Saturn, as ruler of Capricorn, is the single most important planet in a Capricorn-rising chart. Its sign shows how comfortably the person's vitality and intentions can express themselves, and its house shows where life's energy naturally goes. A strong Saturn — in its own sign, exalted, in an angle or trine, aspected by benefics — is traditionally read as robust health and self-direction; a weak or afflicted Saturn asks for more care and patience.
Yogas in the rising sign
A planet in the 1st house in its own sign or exaltation forms one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. With Capricorn rising, that is possible for: Ruchaka yoga (by Mars); Shasha yoga (by Saturn). In the rising sign itself, Mars is exalted in Capricorn and Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, so a planet placed there is read with that dignity.
Rising sign, Moon sign and Sun sign
Vedic astrology reads the chart from the lagna and also from the Moon (Chandra lagna). A Capricorn ascendant with the Moon in a very different sign gives two frames that the astrologer blends: the lagna for the body, circumstances and how life unfolds, the Moon for the mind and feelings. Because Vedic charts are sidereal, a person who is Capricorn rising in a Vedic chart is often Aquarius rising in a Western chart; the ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and latitude, so an accurate birth time matters.
The Western view
In Western astrology a Capricorn ascendant gives a reserved, capable, ambitious persona, with Saturn as chart ruler. Many Vedic Capricorn risings are Aquarius rising in a tropical chart.
