In short: With Aries rising, the chart begins in the sign of the ram: an energetic, direct, self-starting temperament ruled by Mars. Life tends to be approached head on, with courage and speed, and the main lessons are patience and pacing.

At a glance

Rising sign Aries (Mesha) — fire, movable
Lagna lord (chart ruler) Mars
Yogakaraka None (no single planet rules both an angle and a trine)
Maraka lords (2nd and 7th) Venus — a technical term in longevity calculations, not a prediction
Badhaka lord (later tradition) Saturn, lord of the 11th (Prashna Marga rule for movable signs)
Nakshatras of the rising degree Ashwini (0°–13°20′); Bharani (13°20′–26°40′); Krittika (26°40′–30°)
Opposite sign (7th house) Libra

Temperament and presence

Aries rising traditionally gives an active body, a quick walk and a ready response to challenge. Classical descriptions of Aries in the lagna (BPHS ch. 4; Phaladeepika ch. 1) emphasise courage, a fiery nature and fondness for movement. The person often looks and feels younger than their age, enjoys competition, and dislikes waiting. Because Mars rules both the 1st and the 8th, health, vitality and crises of renewal are linked themes.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: courage, initiative, honesty, physical energy and the ability to lead.

Challenges: impatience, a quick temper, accidents from haste, and starting more than is finished.

Relationships, work and wellbeing

Relationships: the 7th house is Libra, ruled by Venus — partners often bring the diplomacy and grace that balance Aries's directness.

Work: the 10th is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn: careers that reward discipline and long effort, often in leadership, engineering, the armed services or enterprise.

Wellbeing: Aries is the head of the cosmic person; vigorous exercise and rest from intensity help. Not medical advice.

The house signs and their lords

With Aries rising, every house is fixed (whole-sign houses), and each takes the lord of its sign:

House Sign Lord
1st — self, body and vitality Aries Mars
2nd — wealth, family, food and speech Taurus Venus
3rd — courage, siblings, skills and communication Gemini Mercury
4th — home, mother, property and inner peace Cancer Moon
5th — children, creativity, intelligence and merit Leo Sun
6th — work, service, health habits, debts and rivals Virgo Mercury
7th — marriage, partners and contracts Libra Venus
8th — transformation, shared resources and the hidden Scorpio Mars
9th — fortune, faith, teachers and long journeys Sagittarius Jupiter
10th — career, status and action in the world Capricorn Saturn
11th — gains, friends, networks and wishes Aquarius Saturn
12th — expenditure, retreat, foreign lands and liberation Pisces Jupiter

Which planets help and which challenge

Parashari astrology judges a planet's functional nature for each ascendant from the houses it rules (BPHS ch. 34). The general rules: lords of trines (1st, 5th, 9th) are favourable; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are difficult; the 8th lord is difficult (the Sun and Moon excepted); natural benefics that rule angles lose some benefic quality and natural malefics that rule angles lose some malefic quality; lords of the 2nd and 12th take the results of their associations. Applied to Aries rising:

Planet Houses ruled Functional nature (general rules)
Sun 5th benefic (trine lord)
Moon 4th neutral (benefic owning an angle: kendradhipati)
Mars 1st, 8th benefic (lagna lord)
Mercury 3rd, 6th difficult (rules 3rd/6th)
Jupiter 9th, 12th benefic (trine lord)
Venus 2nd, 7th neutral (benefic owning an angle: kendradhipati) · maraka
Saturn 10th, 11th difficult (rules 11th)
Rahu — acts through its dispositor and conjunctions
Ketu — acts through its dispositor and conjunctions

For Aries rising the Sun (5th lord) and Jupiter (9th and 12th lord) are the key trine lords and natural supports; Mars as lagna lord is central. Saturn, ruling the 10th and 11th, is functionally difficult under the general rules, yet it governs career and gains, so its condition matters a great deal. Mercury, ruling the 3rd and 6th, is the planet most often read as challenging.

The lagna lord

Mars, as ruler of Aries, is the single most important planet in a Aries-rising chart. Its sign shows how comfortably the person's vitality and intentions can express themselves, and its house shows where life's energy naturally goes. A strong Mars — in its own sign, exalted, in an angle or trine, aspected by benefics — is traditionally read as robust health and self-direction; a weak or afflicted Mars asks for more care and patience.

Yogas in the rising sign

A planet in the 1st house in its own sign or exaltation forms one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. With Aries rising, that is possible for: Ruchaka yoga (by Mars). In the rising sign itself, Sun is exalted in Aries and Saturn is debilitated in Aries, so a planet placed there is read with that dignity.

Rising sign, Moon sign and Sun sign

Vedic astrology reads the chart from the lagna and also from the Moon (Chandra lagna). A Aries ascendant with the Moon in a very different sign gives two frames that the astrologer blends: the lagna for the body, circumstances and how life unfolds, the Moon for the mind and feelings. Because Vedic charts are sidereal, a person who is Aries rising in a Vedic chart is often Taurus rising in a Western chart; the ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and latitude, so an accurate birth time matters.

The Western view

In Western astrology an Aries ascendant gives an assertive, energetic, pioneering persona; Mars as chart ruler is read the same way. Because of the zodiac difference, many Vedic Aries risings are Taurus rising in a tropical chart.
