In short: With Scorpio rising, the chart begins in Mars's fixed water sign: an intense, private, determined and perceptive temperament. The Moon (9th lord) and Jupiter (2nd and 5th lord) are key benefics, and the Sun as 10th lord is strong for career.

Strengths and challenges
Strengths: depth, determination, resilience, perception and loyalty.
Challenges: secrecy, suspicion and holding grudges.

Work: the 10th is Leo, ruled by the Sun: careers of authority, leadership, government or public responsibility.
Wellbeing: Scorpio is the reproductive system; emotional honesty helps. Not medical advice.

Which planets help and which challenge
Parashari astrology judges a planet's functional nature for each ascendant from the houses it rules (BPHS ch. 34). The general rules: lords of trines (1st, 5th, 9th) are favourable; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are difficult; the 8th lord is difficult (the Sun and Moon excepted); natural benefics that rule angles lose some benefic quality and natural malefics that rule angles lose some malefic quality; lords of the 2nd and 12th take the results of their associations. Applied to Scorpio rising:
| Planet | Houses ruled | Functional nature (general rules) |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 10th | neutral to good (malefic owning an angle) |
| Moon | 9th | benefic (trine lord) |
| Mars | 1st, 6th | benefic (lagna lord) |
| Mercury | 8th, 11th | difficult (rules 8th/11th) |
| Jupiter | 2nd, 5th | benefic (trine lord) · maraka |
| Venus | 7th, 12th | neutral (benefic owning an angle: kendradhipati) · maraka |
| Saturn | 3rd, 4th | difficult (rules 3rd) |
| Rahu | — | acts through its dispositor and conjunctions |
| Ketu | — | acts through its dispositor and conjunctions |
There is no single yogakaraka for Scorpio rising, but the Moon (9th lord) and Sun (10th lord) together form a classic raja yoga combination when they are connected. Jupiter, ruling the 2nd and 5th, is benefic. Mercury (8th and 11th) and Saturn (3rd and 4th) are functionally difficult under the general rules.
The lagna lord
Mars, as ruler of Scorpio, is the single most important planet in a Scorpio-rising chart. Its sign shows how comfortably the person's vitality and intentions can express themselves, and its house shows where life's energy naturally goes. A strong Mars — in its own sign, exalted, in an angle or trine, aspected by benefics — is traditionally read as robust health and self-direction; a weak or afflicted Mars asks for more care and patience.
Yogas in the rising sign
A planet in the 1st house in its own sign or exaltation forms one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. With Scorpio rising, that is possible for: Ruchaka yoga (by Mars). In the rising sign itself, Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, so a planet placed there is read with that dignity.
Rising sign, Moon sign and Sun sign
Vedic astrology reads the chart from the lagna and also from the Moon (Chandra lagna). A Scorpio ascendant with the Moon in a very different sign gives two frames that the astrologer blends: the lagna for the body, circumstances and how life unfolds, the Moon for the mind and feelings. Because Vedic charts are sidereal, a person who is Scorpio rising in a Vedic chart is often Sagittarius rising in a Western chart; the ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and latitude, so an accurate birth time matters.
The Western view
In Western astrology a Scorpio ascendant gives an intense, magnetic, private persona; Mars and, for modern astrologers, Pluto are chart rulers. Many Vedic Scorpio risings are Sagittarius rising in a tropical chart.
