A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Who Ganga is, and what the chalisa is

Ganga is the holy river and the goddess who is the river. The Ramayana and the Puranas tell that she flowed in heaven until King Bhagiratha, after long austerities, won her descent to earth to free the souls of his sixty thousand ancestors, the sons of King Sagara. Her fall would have shattered the earth, so Shiva caught her in his matted locks and let her out gently; she then followed Bhagiratha past Haridwar, Prayag and Kashi to the sea at Ganga Sagar. She is called Bhagirathi after him and Jahnavi after the sage Jahnu, who drank her up and released her as his daughter. In the Mahabharata she is the mother of Bhishma. She is pictured fair as a white lotus, riding the makara, a water creature, with a pitcher of nectar in her hand.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. The Ganga Chalisa opens with a doha, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with two dohas. It praises Ganga's form, retells her descent and her three streams (Mandakini in the sky, Bhagirathi or Jahnavi on earth, Prabhavati below), names the great pilgrim places on her banks, and speaks of the purity tradition finds in her name and her water. The poet signs himself in the thirty-ninth chaupai: Sundardas, “the servant of Ganga”, of the village of Kakra, a place linked with the sage Durvasa. The last doha dates the hymn to Rama's birthday in the month of Chaitra, in a year written as a word-puzzle (bhuj, nabh, dishi, “arm, sky, directions”) that cannot be read with certainty. Nothing more is known about him; it is an old devotional text, printed in chalisa collections for generations.

Many families recite it on Ganga Dussehra and at Kartik Purnima, and keeping a regular time can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Ganga Chalisa?

The poet names himself in the thirty-ninth chaupai: Sundardas, of the village of Kakra, “the servant of Ganga”. The closing doha gives the day, Rama's birthday in Chaitra, but the year is written as a word-puzzle that cannot be read with certainty. Nothing more is recorded about him.

Why is Ganga called Bhagirathi and Jahnavi?

Bhagirathi after King Bhagiratha, whose austerities brought her down to earth; Jahnavi after the sage Jahnu, who swallowed her when her flood disturbed his worship and then let her out, so that she became known as his daughter.

What are Ganga's three streams in the chalisa?

Tradition says that after leaving Shiva's locks Ganga flowed in three worlds: as Mandakini in the sky, as Bhagirathi or Jahnavi on earth, and as Prabhavati (in other texts Bhogavati) in the underworld. That is why she is also called Tripathaga, “she who goes three ways”.

Is there a Ganga aarti as well?

Yes: “Om Jai Gange Mata”, the aarti sung on the ghats at dusk. See the Ganga Aarti.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent witnesses: Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org; Webdunia carries the same text word for word, misprints included), the Randhir Prakashan (Haridwar) print 51 Chalisa Sangrah (2004, scanned on archive.org), and Aaj Tak (aajtak.in), whose text is rough in spelling but follows an independent line of transmission. All three have the same opening doha, forty chaupais and two closing dohas, including the poet's name. Where they differ we follow the reading two of the three share, or the one that keeps the sense and the metre.

Variants: ch. 1 haran agh khaani (print, Aaj Tak; Bharat Discovery drops haran); ch. 2 vikhyaata (Bharat Discovery misprints vikhayaata); ch. 3 jai jai Jahnu suta agh hanani, following Aaj Tak's Jahanu, which keeps the metre and the well-known title “daughter of Jahnu”; the other two read jai jai jai hanu suta, and Bharat Discovery agh anani; ch. 6 harani tam dooshan, printed as one word haranitam; ch. 7 tung (Aaj Tak, as in the opening doha; the others tang); ch. 10 sahasra (printed sahatra); ch. 15 hahraai, “roaring” (print, Aaj Tak; Bharat Discovery lahraai, “rippling”); ch. 30 dukh bhaajat (print, Aaj Tak; Bharat Discovery sukh); ch. 31 nit (print, Aaj Tak; Bharat Discovery nij); ch. 34 nikasat hi (print, Aaj Tak; Bharat Discovery ki); ch. 35 aghin, “sinners” (Aaj Tak; the others adhin); last doha pooran (Bharat Discovery misprints poon). Ch. 4 mam tanu is in all three; it probably stands for sam tanu, “a body like”, and we translate it so. Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
