What the Shiv Chalisa is

A chalisa is a hymn of forty (chalis) short verses. The Shiv Chalisa is the best-known one for Shiva, written in simple old Hindi so that anyone can say it at home, without a priest and without knowing Sanskrit. It opens with a doha (a two-line verse) to Ganesha, then has forty chaupais (four-part verses) in praise of Shiva, and closes with a doha.

Shiva, also called Mahadev, Shankar and Bholenath, is one of the great forms of the divine in Hindu tradition: the calm yogi of Mount Kailash, the husband of Parvati and father of Ganesha and Kartikeya. He is pictured with the crescent Moon in his hair, the river Ganga flowing from his locks, a snake at his neck and a trident in his hand. He is loved as the god who is easily pleased (Bholenath, the simple-hearted lord) and who drank the poison of the ocean to save the world.

The chalisa names its poet twice: Ayodhyadas. Little else is known about him. The verses retell Shiva's best-loved stories (Kartikeya defeating the demon Taraka, the burning of Tripura, Ganga brought down for Bhagiratha, the poison that made his throat blue) and end with a simple, personal prayer for help.

Many families recite it on Mondays and through the month of Shravan, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Questions

Who wrote the Shiv Chalisa?

The poet names himself in the first doha and in the last chaupai: Ayodhyadas. Very little else is known about him; the chalisa has been passed down in homes and temples for generations.

Can women recite the Shiv Chalisa?

Yes. Anyone can recite it: women and men, young and old. It was written in simple Hindi precisely so that everyone could.

Do I need a Shivling to recite it?

No. A picture of Shiva is fine, and so is simply closing your eyes. Water, milk and bel leaves are lovely if you have them, but the recitation itself is what matters.

Is the Shiv Chalisa linked to the Moon and Saturn?

In Jyotish, Shiva is traditionally associated with the Moon, which rests on his head, and with Saturn, who is said to regard Shiva as his guru. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion to Shiva, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result. To see where the Moon and Saturn sit in your own chart, open your free Kundli.
