What it means for you
Lord of the 10th in the 1st: what is likely
If the lord of your 10th house sits in your 1st house, here is what astrologers expect.
- CareerFavouredCareer, status and public life are tied to you — your body, temperament and the way you meet life. This is usually a supportive link.
- Health habitsFavouredYou — your body, temperament and the way you meet life become a channel for the 10th house’s matters.
How strongly: stronger when the lord is in its own or exaltation sign, or aspected by Jupiter; weaker when debilitated, combust or hemmed between malefics.
When it shows most: in the dasha and antardasha of the 10th lord, and when Jupiter or Saturn transits the 10th or 1st house.
Why we say this
- Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house’s matters with it (BPHS ch. 24).
- The 1st house is an angle — strong and visible.
- The lord’s dignity matters most: in its own or exaltation sign it delivers more; debilitated, it delivers after struggle.
These are tendencies from one placement. Your whole chart — the sign, the house lord, aspects and your dashas — decides how they play out. Make your free kundli to see your own.
In short: The lord of career sits in the house of the self: work and identity are closely bound. You are likely to be your own best advertisement, to take initiative in your profession, and to be known for who you are as much as for what you do. Traditional texts value this link between the 1st and 10th, both kendras, as giving self-made status. The task is to let a life exist beyond the job title.
What this placement joins
Parashari astrology reads a house through its lord: wherever the lord goes, it carries the house's matters with it. The 10th house is career, status and action in the world; the 1st is self, body and vitality — a kendra (angle); trikona (trine). Counted from the 10th itself, the 1st is the 4th from the 10th, an angle from its own house.
BPHS devotes a chapter (ch. 24 in Santhanam's numbering) to each house lord in each of the twelve houses, in one or two terse verses apiece. Those verses are written as absolute statements; Sunyra reads them, as most modern Jyotishis do, as tendencies to be weighed with the rest of the chart. The reading above is our own summary of the principle, not a translation.
By rising sign
Which planet is the 10th lord — and how comfortable it is in the 1st house — depends on your ascendant. Dignity is by sign; functional nature follows the general rules of BPHS ch. 34.
| Rising sign | Lord of the 10th | Its sign here | Dignity there | Its other house | Functional nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Saturn | Aries | debilitated | 11th | difficult |
| Taurus | Saturn | Taurus | friend's sign (Venus) | 9th | yogakaraka |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Gemini | enemy's sign (Mercury) | 7th | neutral |
| Cancer | Mars | Cancer | debilitated | 5th | yogakaraka |
| Leo | Venus | Leo | enemy's sign (Sun) | 3rd | difficult |
| Virgo | Mercury | Virgo | exalted | 1st | benefic |
| Libra | Moon | Libra | neutral sign (Venus) | — | neutral |
| Scorpio | Sun | Scorpio | friend's sign (Mars) | — | neutral to good |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Sagittarius | neutral sign (Jupiter) | 7th | neutral |
| Capricorn | Venus | Capricorn | friend's sign (Saturn) | 5th | yogakaraka |
| Aquarius | Mars | Aquarius | neutral sign (Saturn) | 3rd | difficult |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Pisces | own sign | 1st | benefic |
The lord is especially strong for Virgo rising (Mercury exalted in Virgo); Pisces rising (Jupiter in its own sign in Pisces). It is debilitated for Aries rising (Saturn debilitated in Aries); Cancer rising (Mars debilitated in Cancer), so look for neecha bhanga (cancellation) conditions before reading it as weak.
What strengthens or weakens it
- Dignity. Exalted, own-sign or friendly placements make the lord more able to deliver; debility, combustion (closeness to the Sun) or an enemy's sign make it work harder.
- The karaka. BPHS gives the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn as significators of the 10th house: authority, skill, wisdom and steady work.
- Aspects. From the 1st, every planet aspects the 7th house; Jupiter's aspect on the lord or the 10th is the classic protector, and malefic aspects add pressure.
- Divisional charts. Check the lord in the dashamsa (D10), which BPHS uses for one's standing and deeds; a lord strong in both charts is far more reliable.
- Jaimini factors. Compare with the Amatyakaraka (Jaimini's significator of career) and the strongest planet aspecting the 10th.
Timing
Career changes are usually timed by the dasha of the 10th lord, of planets in or aspecting the 10th, and of the D10's strong planets, together with transits — Saturn's and Jupiter's movements over the 10th house, its lord and the Moon are the most watched.
In Western astrology
Traditional Western astrology uses the same logic under another name: the ruler of the Midheaven sign, read as the direction of one's career and reputation. A ruler of the 10th placed in the 1st links the two houses' affairs, judged by the planet's essential dignity and condition. Modern Western astrologers use the same idea, sometimes with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
Questions to ask
- What is the 10th lord's dignity, and where does it fall in the D10?
- Which planets occupy or aspect the 10th house?
- Does the 10th lord combine with the 9th or 5th lord (a raja-yoga link)?
- What does the Amatyakaraka suggest?
