In short: Vedic astrology reads career from the 10th house (karma bhava) and its lord, the planets in and aspecting the 10th, the dashamsa (D10) divisional chart, the Amatyakaraka of the Jaimini system, and the classical rule — given by Varahamihira and Mantreswara — that the source of livelihood is shown by the planet ruling the navamsa of the 10th lord. Timing comes from the dasha and from Saturn's and Jupiter's transits. These describe inclinations and periods of change; they cannot choose a career for you or promise success.
Where astrologers start
A career reading usually runs through five layers:
- The 10th house — action, status, profession and reputation; the most prominent of the four angles. BPHS treats it in its own chapter (ch. 21 in Santhanam's numbering).
- The 10th lord — its house, sign, dignity and associations (see the 10th lord in each house).
- The karakas of the 10th — BPHS names the Sun (authority), Mercury (skill and commerce), Jupiter (wisdom and counsel) and Saturn (steady work and service).
- The dashamsa (D10) — the tenth division, which BPHS (ch. 6) assigns to one's deeds and standing.
- The Amatyakaraka (AmK) — in the Jaimini scheme, the planet with the second-highest degree within its sign among the chara karakas, read as the "minister", the significator of career.
The 2nd and 11th houses (income and gains), the 6th (daily work and service) and the 3rd (effort and skill) complete the picture; together with the 10th they are the artha houses of livelihood.
The classical rule for profession
Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka (ch. 10, karmajiva) and Mantreswara's Phaladeepika (ch. 5) give a well-known method. Look at the planets in the 10th house counted from the ascendant, from the Moon and from the Sun; they describe sources of income. Then find the 10th lord (from the strongest of the three) and note the navamsa it occupies: the lord of that navamsa is read as the planet of livelihood, and its nature suggests the field.
The texts' lists of professions belong to their world — agriculture, kingship, priesthood, trade, service. Modern astrologers translate them into today's occupations, as in the table below. The translations are interpretive.
Planets and professions
| Planet | Traditional associations | Common modern readings |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | kings, government, authority, gold, medicine through the father's line | public service, administration, leadership roles, government |
| Moon | water, liquids, travel, women, the public | care work, hospitality, food, nursing, public-facing roles, shipping |
| Mars | soldiers, metals, fire, land, weapons | engineering, defence, police, surgery, sport, property |
| Mercury | writing, trade, accounts, learning, messengers | commerce, accounting, writing, media, IT, analysis |
| Jupiter | priests, teachers, ministers, counsel, scripture | teaching, law, advice, finance, religion, management |
| Venus | arts, women, ornaments, vehicles, luxury | arts, design, fashion, beauty, entertainment, hospitality |
| Saturn | labour, servants, agriculture, old things | industry, construction, mining, logistics, long-term institutional work |
| Rahu | foreigners, the unconventional | technology, foreign work, media, politics, research into the new |
| Ketu | the spiritual, the precise | research, technical precision, healing traditions, spirituality |
A planet's field is always filtered through its sign and house: Mercury in a Venus sign leans toward commerce in the arts, Mars in a Mercury sign toward technical engineering, and so on.
The dashamsa (D10)
In the D10, the 10th house and its lord, the D10 ascendant, and the dignity of the 10th lord and the Amatyakaraka are read for the shape of a career. A 10th lord strong in both the birth chart and the D10 is read as reliable; strength in one but not the other as promise that needs work to realise. Like every divisional chart, the D10 needs an accurate birth time — each division is only 3° wide.
Yogas for status and work
- Dharma-karmadhipati yoga — the 9th and 10th lords linked — is the classic combination for meaningful work supported by fortune.
- Raja yogas — links between the lords of angles and trines (BPHS ch. 39) — are read for rise in status.
- The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas (Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya, Shasha) — a planet strong in an angle — colour vocation strongly.
- Upachaya strength — malefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th improve with time and effort, a theme the texts repeat for work.
Timing career changes
- The dasha of the 10th lord, of planets in or aspecting the 10th, and of the strongest planets in the D10 are the classic periods of professional change.
- Saturn's transit over the 10th house (from the ascendant or the Moon) is read as a time of responsibility and consolidation, Jupiter's as growth and recognition.
- The Sun's yearly transit of the 10th and the dasha lord's transits refine the year.
A change of period can mean a promotion, a move, a new field, or simply a year when work becomes the main theme. The method shows emphasis, not outcomes.
In Western astrology
Western astrology reads vocation from the Midheaven (MC) and its ruler, the 10th house, and the 6th (daily work) and 2nd (earnings). Saturn and the Sun are central; timing uses transits to the MC and its ruler, secondary progressions and Saturn returns (around ages 29 and 58), which many people associate with professional turning points.
A simple way to read your own chart

- Find the 10th lord: its house, sign, dignity and navamsa — and the lord of that navamsa.
- Check the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn.
- Look at the D10's 10th house and the Amatyakaraka.
- Note your current dasha, and whether its lord connects with the 10th.

FAQ
Which house shows career in Vedic astrology? The 10th house, read with its lord and with the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses.
Is an empty 10th house bad for career? No. An empty house is read through its lord and the planets aspecting it; many successful careers have no planet in the 10th.
What is the best planet for career? There is no single one. The planet linked most strongly to your 10th house — by lordship, placement or the navamsa of the 10th lord — matters more than any general ranking.
