In short: The 4th house is the foundation of the chart: home, family, roots, land, the mother (in Vedic astrology), and the inner peace that comes from feeling at home in oneself. Vedic astrology calls it sukha bhava, the house of happiness, and also bandhu, relatives, and vahana, vehicles. It sits at the bottom of the chart, the nadir, the midnight point — the private self that the world does not see.

What the fourth house means
In Vedic astrology
BPHS ch. 11 gives the 4th house the mother, happiness, home, land and property, vehicles, relatives, cattle, fragrance and inner contentment, and ch. 15 is devoted to judging it. It is a kendra, one of the four angles that give strength to a chart, and it is where the Moon and Venus have directional strength (digbala). Its significator is the Moon, the natural ruler of the mother and the mind, and the 4th is often read for education too — the foundational schooling of childhood.
The 4th is also called the house of sukha, which means ease, comfort and happiness of a lasting kind: the feeling of being safe, nourished and at home.
In Western astrology
Hellenistic astrologers called the 4th place the "Subterranean", the point beneath the earth, and associated it with parents (especially the father), home, property, foundations and the end of matters (Firmicus Maternus, Mathesis II.19). Lilly gives it "fathers in general", lands, houses, inheritances and "the determination or end of anything". Modern Western astrology reads the IC as roots: home, family history, the parent who nurtured, private life and the emotional base from which we live.
A real disagreement. Vedic astrology reads the mother from the 4th and the father from the 9th (and sometimes the 10th). Traditional Western astrology reads the father from the 4th and the mother from the 10th; modern Western astrologers often read the 4th as whichever parent was the primary nurturer. Both readings are long-standing, and Sunyra labels which one it uses.
The lord of the fourth house
The 4th lord shows where a person finds home and contentment. In the 1st it ties happiness to the self and the body; in the 10th, home and career are linked (working from home, a family business); in the 12th, home may be far away; in the 9th, happiness comes through learning and faith; in the 7th, through partnership. Being an angle lord, it is also involved in many raja yogas (combinations for status) when it joins the lords of trines. BPHS ch. 24 describes the 4th lord in each house.
Planets in the fourth house
- Sun — a strong home identity, sometimes a dominant parent; the Sun is without directional strength here, so it is read with care.
- Moon — the natural significator, with directional strength; deep attachment to home and mother, emotional contentment.
- Mars — property and land, energy in the home; sometimes domestic friction. One of the placements counted in Mangal dosha.
- Mercury — a home full of books and talk; education emphasised.
- Jupiter — a happy, spacious, religious or learned home; classically a good placement.
- Venus — directional strength; beautiful home, comfort, vehicles.
- Saturn — responsibility at home, a modest or later-acquired home, or care of elderly parents; endurance.
- Rahu — an unusual home life, foreign residence, restlessness about roots.
- Ketu — detachment from home or a move away from one's origins; spiritual inner life.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (Western) — respectively an unconventional or changeable home; an idealised or elusive one; deep family patterns and transformation.
Transits through the fourth house
Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts the 4th house from the natal Moon as favourable for Mercury and Venus in transit. Saturn's two and a half years in the 4th from the Moon is traditionally called ardhashtama or kantaka Shani, one of the dhaiya periods, often a time of responsibilities at home, property matters or pressure on peace of mind. In Western practice, outer planets crossing the IC are read as times of change in home, family or inner foundations.
A worked example
Suppose a chart has Gemini rising. The 4th house is Virgo, ruled by Mercury, which is also the lagna lord. If Mercury sits in the 4th itself, in its own sign and exaltation, it forms Bhadra yoga (one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas) in an angle: a classical picture of a well-educated person deeply tied to home and learning, who may well work from home. If the Moon, the 4th-house karaka, is also strong, the theme of contentment is confirmed.
The sign on the fourth house
The sign on the 4th describes the emotional climate of home. Fire signs here give a lively, busy household and a need for independence at home; earth signs a solid, practical, well-kept one with an interest in land; air signs a sociable home full of conversation and visitors; water signs a deeply emotional, protective home and strong family memories.
House from house
The 4th is the 4th from the 1st and also the 10th from the 7th — the partner's career — which is one reason astrologers look at it when reading how a household balances two working lives. The 4th from the 4th is the 7th, so partnership is traditionally read as part of domestic happiness.
A Lal Kitab note
In Lal Kitab, the 4th is the permanent house of the Moon and is read for the mother, peace of mind, milk and water. Lal Kitab's well-known remedies involving water, silver and respect for the mother are tied to the planets placed in this house and are part of its own system.
In relationships
The 4th house describes the emotional foundation a person brings to relationships — what "home" means to them — and the family they grew up in. In Vedic matching, the 4th is read alongside the 7th for domestic happiness after marriage.
In career
The 4th house supports careers in real estate, property and construction, agriculture and land, hospitality, education, vehicles and transport, and any work from home. Its opposite, the 10th, is career itself; the 4th–10th axis shows the balance between private and public life.
Health as wellbeing
The 4th house is linked with the heart and chest and, as sukha, with peace of mind. As wellbeing, it asks for a home that restores, a few places where one feels safe, and time for the inner life. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
When the fourth house is active
The 4th house comes to the foreground in the dasha or antardasha of its lord, of planets placed in it, and of the Moon. Such periods are traditionally associated with moving house, buying property or vehicles, changes in family life, the mother's wellbeing, completing education, and — inwardly — a search for peace and belonging. A strong 4th lord in a good dasha is one of the classical signatures of settling down.
Questions to ask of the fourth house
Which sign is on the 4th, and where is its lord? How strong is the Moon? Which planets occupy or aspect the 4th? Do the lords of the 4th and 10th, or of the 4th and a trine, combine in a raja yoga? Is Mars placed so as to count for Mangal dosha, and is it cancelled? Which dasha is running?
House systems
In whole-sign houses the 4th is the fourth sign from the ascendant. In quadrant systems the 4th cusp is the IC itself, the lowest point of the ecliptic, which can fall in a different sign. Sunyra shows both.
Vedic and Western views compared
Both traditions read the 4th house as home, roots, property and the private self. They differ on which parent it represents (mother in Vedic astrology, father in traditional Western astrology) and in emphasis: Vedic astrology stresses happiness, vehicles and education; modern Western astrology stresses emotional foundations and family history.

Does the 4th house represent the mother or the father? The mother in Vedic astrology; traditionally the father in Western astrology. Modern Western astrologers often read it as the nurturing parent.
Which planets have directional strength in the 4th? The Moon and Venus.
What is the IC? The Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the ecliptic below the horizon — the cusp of the 4th house in quadrant systems.
Is Mars in the 4th Mangal dosha? It is one of the placements counted, and there are many classical cancellations. It is one factor among many.
Does the 4th house show property? Yes, traditionally — land, houses and vehicles.
