In short: The 11th house is the house of gains: income and profit, the fulfilment of wishes, friends, networks, communities, elder siblings and benefactors. Vedic astrology calls it labha bhava, the house of gain, and aya, income. It is the most rewarding of the growth houses (upachaya), and Hellenistic astrology called it the "Good Spirit". Almost any planet is traditionally said to give good results here.

What the eleventh house means

In Vedic astrology

BPHS ch. 11 gives the 11th house gains of all kinds, income, elder siblings, friends, the left ear and the fulfilment of desires, and ch. 22 is devoted to judging it. It is an upachaya house, and the classical texts are unusually generous about it: benefics and malefics alike are traditionally said to give gains here, each in their own way.

The 11th lord is a key part of wealth combinations (dhana yogas), especially with the lords of the 2nd, 5th and 9th. One classical caution: because the 11th is also the 6th from the 6th, its lord is sometimes read as carrying a little of the 6th house's difficulty, particularly for certain ascendants. This is a refinement, not a reason for worry.

In Western astrology

Hellenistic astrologers called the 11th place the "Good Spirit", the joy of Jupiter, and associated it with friends, hopes, benefactors and good fortune (Firmicus Maternus, Mathesis II.19; Paulus Alexandrinus). Lilly gives it "friends", "hope, trust, confidence" and "the praise or dispraise of any one", and the king's counsellors. Modern Western astrology reads it as friendship, groups, communities, networks, collective causes and long-term goals.

The lord of the eleventh house

The 11th lord shows where gains come from. In the 10th, gains through career; in the 2nd, wealth accumulated; in the 5th, gains through creativity, investment or children; in the 7th, through partnership or trade; in the 9th, through good fortune or teachers; in the 12th, through foreign connections or with high expenses. BPHS ch. 24 describes the 11th lord in each house.

Planets in the eleventh house

  • Sun — gains through authority or government; influential friends.
  • Moon — gains through the public; many friends; fluctuating income.
  • Mars — gains through effort, property or competition; energetic friends.
  • Mercury — gains through trade, communication and networks.
  • Jupiter — the natural significator and Hellenistic joy; generous gains, wise friends, fulfilment of wishes.
  • Venus — gains through the arts, beauty or relationships; pleasant social life.
  • Saturn — slow but lasting gains; older or serious friends; persistence rewarded.
  • Rahu — traditionally one of its best placements: large or unusual gains, foreign or technological networks.
  • Ketu — gains through spiritual or technical work; detachment from material desire.
  • Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (Western) — respectively unusual friends and causes; idealistic communities; powerful networks.

Transits through the eleventh house

The 11th house from the natal Moon is the one house where Phaladeepika (ch. 26) counts every planet favourable in transit — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Saturn's two and a half years in the 11th from the Moon, for example, is traditionally remembered as a time of gains after effort. In Western practice, Jupiter through the 11th house is linked with new friendships and opportunities.

A worked example

Suppose a chart has Virgo rising. The 11th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon. If the Moon sits in the 11th, in its own sign, and is bright, the classical reading is gains through the public and a wide circle of friends, with income that rises and falls but stays generous. If Mercury, the lagna lord, aspects or joins the Moon, the person's own skills drive those gains.

The sign on the eleventh house

The sign on the 11th describes a person's friendships and goals. Fire signs here give enthusiastic, inspiring friends and bold ambitions; earth signs loyal, practical friends and steady goals; air signs wide, intellectual networks; water signs close, emotionally bonded circles.

House from house

The 11th is the 7th from the 5th — the partner of one's children — and the 3rd from the 9th, the efforts of the father or teacher. It is also the 6th from the 6th, which is the source of the classical caution about its lord. The 5th–11th axis joins what we create and what we gain from it.

When the eleventh house is active

The 11th house comes forward in the dasha or antardasha of its lord, of planets placed in it, and of Jupiter. Such periods are traditionally associated with rising income, fulfilled wishes, new friendships and networks, and help from elder siblings or benefactors.

In relationships

The 11th house describes friendships and the communities a couple belongs to. In Western astrology it is where friendship itself is read; in Vedic astrology, as the 5th from the 7th, it is also read for the partner's creativity and children.

A Lal Kitab note

In Lal Kitab the 11th house is associated with Jupiter (and, in some lists, with Saturn) and is read for income, gains and the fulfilment of wishes. Its remedies, as in the rest of Lal Kitab, depend on the exact planets placed in the house.

Hopes and wishes

The 11th is the house where desires are fulfilled — labha means gain of every kind, not only money. Classical texts read it for the fulfilment of wishes in general, which makes it a good house to reflect on what one really wants. Western astrologers speak of the 11th as the house of hopes and long-term goals; both traditions agree that what we wish for, and the people who help us reach it, are written here.

Friendship and networks

In modern life the 11th house has become especially vivid: professional networks, online communities, collective causes and friendships across distance are all read here. A strong 11th often describes a person whose opportunities come through other people — and who is generous in passing opportunities on.

Elder siblings and benefactors

The 11th is the traditional house of elder siblings, and more broadly of the people a step ahead of us — mentors, patrons, benefactors — whose help turns effort into gain. The Latin benefacta, "benefits received", captures this well: the 11th describes the good that comes to us through others, and the gratitude it calls for. Planets here are often read for the character of those helpers and for how readily a person accepts help.

Income over time

Because the 11th is an upachaya house, its gains are traditionally expected to grow with age and steady effort. A modest 11th early in life is not a fixed limit; it often describes income that builds.

In career

The 11th house shows the gains of a career — income, recognition, the network that sustains it. It supports work in large organisations, social and community work, technology and networks, finance, and any field where contacts matter.

Health as wellbeing

The 11th house is linked with the calves and ankles in the cosmic person and with the left ear. As wellbeing, it reflects the health of our social connections — friendship as a resource. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

Questions to ask of the eleventh house

Which sign is on the 11th, and where is its lord? How strong is Jupiter? Which planets occupy or aspect the 11th? How do the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th combine? Which dasha is running?

House systems

In whole-sign houses the 11th is the eleventh sign from the ascendant; in quadrant systems it begins at the 11th cusp. Sunyra shows both.

Vedic and Western views compared

Both traditions read the 11th as friends, hopes and good fortune, and both consider it one of the best houses. Vedic astrology emphasises gains, income, elder siblings and the fulfilment of desires; modern Western astrology emphasises friendship, groups and collective causes.
