The prince of the planets

Mercury is the mind that names, connects and exchanges. Speech, writing, learning, trade, humour, and skill with the hands. In Vedic astrology it is Budh, which means "the wise one". It is the prince of the planetary court: young, quick and adaptable, a planet that takes on the colour of whatever it is joined with. If you want to know how someone thinks, how they talk, and how they do business, astrologers look at Mercury.

In this video: the story of Budh's birth, the real Mercury, what it means in your chart, Mercury in love, in career and in money, and what Mercury retrograde really means.

The story of Budh

Budh's birth is one of the most human stories in the Puranas. Chandra, the Moon, carried off Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods. Brihaspati demanded her return. Chandra refused, the gods and the demons took sides, and a war followed, until Brahma made peace and Tara went home. But she was with child.

The boy was born so beautiful and so bright that both Brihaspati and Chandra claimed him. Tara, ashamed, would not speak, until the child himself asked who his father was. Then she said: Chandra. Brahma named the boy Budh, the wise one, for his intelligence. The story left its mark on astrology.

In the classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the Moon counts Mercury as a friend, but Mercury counts the Moon as an enemy. A son who never quite forgave the way he was born. Budh later married Ila, and their son Pururavas became the first king of the lunar dynasty. In Greece, his cousin in temperament is Hermes, who on the day he was born invented the lyre, stole fifty of Apollo's cattle, and drove them backwards so that their tracks pointed the wrong way. Astrologers enjoy that story, given Mercury's famous retrogrades.

The real Mercury

The real Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system and the closest to the Sun. It goes round the Sun in just eighty-eight days, faster than any other planet. One full day and night on Mercury lasts one hundred and seventy-six Earth days. It has no moons and almost no air, and its temperature swings from about four hundred and thirty degrees by day to minus one hundred and eighty by night. From Earth, Mercury never strays more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun.

So it is always in the same sign as the Sun, or in the sign on either side. And in most years it turns retrograde three times, each time for about three weeks.

What Budh means

In Jyotish, Mercury signifies intelligence and learning: analysis, mathematics, writing, languages, and memory for detail. It signifies speech: eloquence, wit, humour and mediation. It signifies trade and commerce: accounts, negotiation and business sense. And it is the eternal teenager of the grahas, playful and quick. Mercury rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo.

Unusually, it is exalted in one of its own signs, Virgo, and debilitated in Pisces. It rules three nakshatras: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati. Its day is Wednesday, its colour is green, and its dasha lasts seventeen years. Here is the key to reading Mercury. It is a natural benefic, but a conditional one.

Alone, or with benefic planets, Mercury is benefic. Joined with malefic planets, it takes on their nature. It is the most impressionable planet in the chart, so astrologers read it through its companions more than any other.

Mercury in love

In love, Mercury shows how you talk to the people you love. For many couples, the honest test of a relationship is a Mercury question: can we talk about anything? In Vedic astrology, a strong Mercury in or aspecting the seventh house is read as a youthful, communicative partnership, often with a lot of laughter. In Western synastry, contacts between two people's Mercury are read as easy conversation and shared humour. And when Mercury is strained, the advice is simple: slow down, listen fully, and say what you mean, kindly.

Career, business and money

Now money, where Mercury really matters. Mercury rules the professions of words, numbers and exchange: writing and publishing, teaching, accounting and finance, commerce and sales, software and analysis, translation, journalism, and any trade that depends on precise detail. A Mercury connected with the tenth house often points to a career built on skill and communication. Mercury is also the planet of the trader. In the chart, astrologers look at Mercury's link with the second house of income, and the eleventh house of gains, to see how well someone can turn ideas into money.

A strong Mercury does not guarantee wealth. But it is often found in people who can negotiate, sell, and keep good accounts. Three habits that, in any tradition, help money stay.

Mercury retrograde, calmly

And Mercury retrograde. Three or four times a year, Mercury appears to move backwards for about three weeks. In popular Western astrology these periods are linked with misunderstandings, delays and technology glitches, and the advice is to review, revise and reconnect, rather than launch. Vedic astrology sees it a little differently. A retrograde planet is close to Earth and bright, and classical texts give it a special strength, called cheshta bala.

And both traditions agree that being born with Mercury retrograde is not a flaw. It often describes a reflective, original, or late-blooming mind. Mercury is retrograde right now, until the thirteenth of November twenty twenty-six. In twenty twenty-seven, it is retrograde from the ninth of February to the third of March, from the tenth of June to the fourth of July, and from the seventh to the twenty-eighth of October, in universal time.

Recap

To recap. Budh is the mind, speech and trade: the prince of the planets. It rules Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces, and its dasha lasts seventeen years. It takes on the colour of the planets it is with. And a Mercury retrograde is a time to review, not a reason to fear.
