The planet of the mind
In Vedic astrology, when someone asks you "what is your sign?", the answer is not your Sun sign. It is your Moon sign. Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon's star at your birth sets the timeline of your whole life's dashas. And when two families compare horoscopes for marriage, it is the two Moons they compare.
Why does the Moon matter so much? Because in Jyotish, the Moon is the mind. It is how you feel, what makes you feel safe, how you love when no one is watching. In this video we meet Chandra: the stories, the real Moon in the sky, what it means in your chart, and what it says about love, marriage, career and peace of mind.
The stories of Chandra
The Moon has several origin stories, and the Puranas do not try to reconcile them. In one, the Moon rises from the churning of the Ocean of Milk, among the treasures that appeared before the nectar of immortality. Shiva takes the crescent and wears it in his hair. In another, Chandra is born from the sage Atri, and becomes the founder of the lunar dynasty of kings. The best-known story explains the phases.
Chandra married the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha. They are the twenty-seven nakshatras, the lunar mansions that the Moon visits one by one each month. But Chandra loved only one of them, Rohini, and spent all his time with her. The other sisters complained to their father. Daksha warned Chandra, and when nothing changed, he cursed him to waste away.
As the Moon faded, plants and creatures began to fail, and the gods stepped in. The curse could not be undone, only softened. So Chandra wanes for half the month and grows again for the other half. Tradition places his recovery at Prabhasa, on the coast of Gujarat, where the Somnath temple stands. Astrologers still remember Rohini.
To this day, the Moon is said to be at its happiest in Rohini's sign, Taurus, where it is exalted.
The real Moon
Now the real Moon. It is Earth's only natural satellite, a little over a quarter of Earth's width, and about three hundred and eighty-four thousand kilometres away on average. It always shows us the same face. In the sky, the Moon is the fastest of all the grahas. It moves about thirteen degrees a day, spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign, and about one day in each nakshatra.
It goes from new Moon to new Moon in about twenty-nine and a half days. And it is never retrograde. The two points where the Moon's tilted path crosses the Sun's path are the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Eclipses happen only when a new or full Moon falls close to them.
What the Moon means
In Jyotish, the Moon signifies the mind and the emotions: mood, memory, contentment and the ability to rest. It signifies the mother, and nurturing, and the fourth house of home and inner peace. It signifies the public: being liked, being trusted, and work that cares for people. The Moon rules one sign, Cancer. It is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio.
It rules three nakshatras: Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. Its day is Monday, its traditional colour is white, and its dasha lasts ten years. One detail is unique. In the classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the Moon is the only graha with no natural enemies. Astrologers read this as the Moon's nature: receptive, open, taking in everything around it.
The Moon's brightness matters too. A waxing Moon, especially one close to full, is counted a natural benefic. A dark Moon near the new Moon is weaker. That is why two people with the Moon in the same sign can have very different Moons.
The Moon in love and marriage
Now love. The Moon shows how you love when you are not performing: the comfort you look for, the care you give, and how you behave when you are hurt. In Vedic marriage matching, the Moon is everything. All eight parts of the traditional guna milan, the thirty-six point system, are worked out from the two partners' Moon signs and Moon nakshatras. Two Moons that understand each other are read as a home that feels easy.
The element of your Moon sign says a lot about what you need. A Moon in a fire sign, Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, tends to need enthusiasm and warmth. In an earth sign, Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn, it needs reliability. In an air sign, Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, it needs conversation. And in a water sign, Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, it needs closeness.
When couples fight, it is often because their Moons are asking for different things. In Western synastry, contacts between one person's Moon and the other's Sun or Venus are read as signs of ease and familiarity. The feeling of "I have known you for years", after one evening.
Career and money
In career, the Moon favours work with people and care: hospitality, nursing and the care professions, teaching young children, food, and public-facing roles. Anything that depends on the public mood. Because the Moon waxes and wanes, a strong lunar chart sometimes shows a career with several phases, rather than one straight line. Income may come in tides. Astrologers would say: do not judge yourself by one phase.
A strong Moon in the tenth house, or in the eleventh house of gains, is often read as popularity that brings money, the kind of trust that makes people come back.
Strengths and challenges
A well-supported Moon gives emotional intelligence: steadiness under pressure, the ability to comfort others, good instincts, a reliable memory, and a gift for making places feel like home. People with a strong Moon are popular in a quiet way. Trusted, rather than admired. The Moon changes constantly, and so can the mind it describes. Traditionally, a Moon with Rahu or Ketu, under Saturn's heavy aspect, debilitated in Scorpio, or very dark, is read as a more sensitive or restless mind.
Worry, changing moods, or a need for more reassurance than others notice. But the classical texts also list many conditions that soften these, and the full chart, and your own choices, decide far more than any single factor. The tradition's advice for the Moon is gentle: rest, regular meals, emotional honesty, and time near water or open sky. And if mood or sleep is a real struggle, that is a conversation for a doctor or a counsellor, not for a chart.
Recap
To recap. Chandra is the mind and the heart. In Vedic astrology your sign is your Moon sign, the Moon's star sets your dashas, and marriage matching compares two Moons. It rules Cancer, is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, and its dasha lasts ten years. And how bright your Moon was at birth matters as much as its sign.
