The house of happiness

Some people can be successful and still never feel at home. Others have very little, and are deeply at peace. Vedic astrology looks for that difference in one place: the fourth house. The fourth house is called sukha bhava, the house of happiness. It is home, the mother, land and vehicles, and the quiet contentment of feeling safe.

In this video: what the fourth house means, the one point on which the two great traditions disagree, where its lord sends your sense of home, what each planet brings here, and when the fourth house comes alive.

What the fourth house means

The classical texts give the fourth house the mother, happiness, home, land and property, vehicles, relatives, and inner contentment. Its Sanskrit names say the same: Sukha, happiness; Bandhu, kin; Matri, mother; Vahana, vehicles; and Griha, home. It is a kendra, one of the four angles that give strength to a chart. Its significator is the Moon, the natural ruler of the mother and the mind. And it is often read for education too, the foundational schooling of childhood.

The word sukha means ease and comfort of a lasting kind. Not excitement, but the feeling of being safe, nourished and at home. The fourth house sits at the very bottom of the chart, the midnight point: the private self the world does not see.

Mother or father?

Here the two traditions genuinely disagree. Vedic astrology reads the mother from the fourth house, and the father from the ninth. Traditional Western astrology does the opposite: the father from the fourth, and the mother from the tenth. The Hellenistic astrologers called the fourth place the Subterranean, the point beneath the earth, and gave it parents, property and foundations. Modern Western astrologers often read the fourth as whichever parent was the primary nurturer.

Both readings are long-standing. What matters is knowing which one an astrologer is using.

Where you find home

The lord of the fourth house shows where a person finds home and contentment. In the first house, happiness is tied to the self and the body. In the tenth, home and career are linked: working from home, or a family business. In the ninth, happiness comes through learning and faith. In the seventh, through partnership.

And in the twelfth, home may be far away. Because the fourth is an angle, its lord also joins many raja yogas, the combinations for status, when it connects with the lords of the trines.

Planets in the fourth house

Now the planets in the fourth house. Two planets are at their directional best here: the Moon and Venus. The Moon gives deep attachment to home and mother, and emotional contentment. Venus gives a beautiful home, comfort and vehicles. Jupiter gives a happy, spacious, learned home, classically a good placement.

Mercury, a home full of books and talk. The Sun gives a strong home identity, sometimes a dominant parent. Mars brings property and land, energy in the home, and sometimes friction. Saturn brings responsibility at home, a home acquired later, or the care of elderly parents. Rahu, an unusual home life or residence abroad.

And Ketu, a move away from one's origins, and a spiritual inner life.

When the fourth house comes alive

The fourth house comes to the foreground in the dasha of its lord, of the planets placed in it, and of the Moon. Such periods are traditionally linked with moving house, buying property or a vehicle, changes in family life, the mother's wellbeing, completing education, and, inwardly, a search for peace and belonging. Transits matter too. When Saturn passes through the fourth house from your natal Moon, for about two and a half years, tradition calls it kantaka Shani, one of the dhaiya periods: often a time of responsibilities at home, or pressure on peace of mind. And one more classical idea.

The fourth from the fourth is the seventh house, so partnership is traditionally read as part of domestic happiness.

Recap

To recap. The fourth house is sukha bhava: home, mother, land, vehicles and inner peace. The Moon is its significator, and the Moon and Venus are strongest here. Vedic astrology reads the mother from it; traditional Western astrology, the father. Its lord shows where you find home, and its dasha periods often bring a move, a property, or a search for belonging.
