The great benefic
Jupiter is the great benefic of astrology. Wisdom, faith, generosity, teachers, children, good fortune, and the sense that life has meaning. In Vedic astrology it is Guru, the teacher of the gods, and its aspect is the single most protective influence in a chart. And this week, Jupiter changes sign. On the thirty-first of October twenty twenty-six, it moves from Cancer into Leo in the Vedic zodiac.
In this video: the story of Brihaspati, the real Jupiter, what Guru means for marriage, children and wealth, its one temptation, and what Jupiter in Leo may bring for your Moon sign.
The story of Brihaspati
Brihaspati is a Vedic god before he is a planet. His name means "lord of the sacred word". In the Rigveda, he is the priest whose chant has power. With his song, he splits open a rock and sets free the cows hidden inside, usually understood as the dawns, light itself, released by sacred speech. From the very beginning, Jupiter is the power of the right word, spoken at the right time.
In the epics, Brihaspati is the teacher of the gods. His great rival is Shukra, Venus, the teacher of the asuras. The Mahabharata tells how Brihaspati's son Kacha went to learn from Shukra the secret of bringing the dead back to life. Shukra's daughter Devayani fell in love with Kacha, and after many trials, Kacha learned the secret. The story is about loyalty, learning and the cost of knowledge, and it is the root of the natural enmity between Jupiter and Venus in Vedic astrology.
In Rome, Jupiter was the king of the gods. The English word "jovial", from Jove, keeps the old belief that people born under Jupiter are good-humoured and generous.
The real Jupiter
The real Jupiter is the largest planet: eleven times Earth's width, with more than twice the mass of all the other planets put together. It spins faster than any other planet, once in under ten hours, and its Great Red Spot is a storm wider than Earth that has been watched for centuries. Galileo discovered its four large moons in sixteen ten. From Earth, Jupiter spends about a year in each sign, and goes round the whole zodiac in about twelve years. That is why astrologers watch Jupiter's yearly sign change so closely.
Once a year it turns retrograde, for about four months.
What Guru means
In Jyotish, Jupiter signifies wisdom and teaching: the guru, scripture, law and ethics. It is the natural significator of children and the fifth house. It signifies wealth and fortune: the second house of savings, the ninth of blessings, and the eleventh of gains. In a long tradition, it also signifies the husband in a woman's chart, which astrologers today read together with the whole seventh house and Venus. And it signifies grace: dharma, faith, generosity and protection.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. It is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. It rules three nakshatras: Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. Its day is Thursday, its colour is yellow, and its dasha lasts sixteen years. And Jupiter's aspect is its most important feature.
Besides the seventh house from itself, it fully aspects the fifth and the ninth. Classical practice treats Jupiter's aspect as protective of whatever it touches: a house, a planet, or a difficult combination.
Marriage, children and wealth
This is why families look to Jupiter for the biggest questions. Marriage. Jupiter's transit is the most commonly cited supportive trigger for marriage in Vedic astrology, especially when it passes over, or aspects, the seventh house or its lord, from the ascendant or from the Moon, during a supportive dasha. Children. As the significator of the fifth house, Jupiter's transits and dashas are watched for children, and a strong Jupiter is read as a blessing for the family line.
Wealth. A Jupiter linked with the second, ninth or eleventh houses is a classic signature of fortune that grows steadily, through wisdom, teaching, advice, law, finance or good counsel. Jupiter rarely brings sudden money. It brings the kind that lasts.
Jupiter's one temptation
Jupiter's gifts are real, but so is its one temptation: too much. Too much optimism, too much spending, too much promise, too much food. Western astrologers call it the planet of expansion, and expansion can go too far. A badly placed Jupiter is traditionally read as careless with money, or as preaching more than practising. The remedy the tradition gives is Jupiter's own virtue: wisdom, and generosity with limits.
Jupiter in Leo: what changes now
Now the transit. Jupiter entered Cancer, its exaltation, on the first of June twenty twenty-six. On the thirty-first of October, it moves into Leo. It turns retrograde on the thirteenth of December, slips back into Cancer on the twenty-fourth of January twenty twenty-seven, turns direct on the thirteenth of April, and returns to Leo in late June. Classically, Jupiter's transit is favourable in the second, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh houses from your Moon sign.
So during Jupiter's months in Leo, five Moon signs get the classic support. For Aries Moon, Jupiter enters the fifth house: one of the best phases of the whole cycle for romance, children and learning. For Cancer Moon, the second: finances and family. For Libra Moon, the eleventh: gains and recognition. For Sagittarius Moon, the ninth: fortune and higher learning, with Jupiter aspecting your Moon sign.
And for Aquarius Moon, the seventh: partnership and marriage come forward, with Jupiter looking straight at your Moon. For other Moon signs, Jupiter in Leo is a quieter phase, best for patient, practical growth. And remember, transits work through the dasha. A good Jupiter transit in a dasha that does not activate those houses may simply feel like a good year, rather than an eventful one.
