The planet that lets go
Where Rahu wants more, Ketu lets go. Ketu is the Moon's south node, the point exactly opposite Rahu. In the myth it is the body without a head. In astrology it is what we already know so well that we no longer think about it: instinct, inherited skill, detachment, and the pull towards what lies beyond the world. Ketu can bring sudden endings, and also sudden insight.
In this video: the story of Ketu, what its name really means, what Ketu means in your chart, Ketu in love, career and money, and the move Ketu makes into Cancer in December.
The story of Ketu
Ketu is the other half of Svarbhanu, the asura who drank the nectar of immortality in disguise at the churning of the Ocean of Milk. When Vishnu's discus severed his head, the head became Rahu, and the body became Ketu. Both became immortal. Astrologers put the difference simply. Rahu is all appetite and no stomach.
Ketu is all body and no head: action without the reasoning mind, the instinct that moves before thought. But the word ketu is much older than the myth. In the Rigveda, it means a bright sign, a banner, a light. One verse praises the one who makes a banner for the bannerless, light for what had none, and that verse became Ketu's traditional mantra. Classical Indian astronomers also used the word ketu for comets.
So Ketu is a sudden light, a flag on the horizon, pointing beyond itself.
What Ketu really is
In the sky, Ketu is the descending node, where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path going south. It is always exactly opposite Rahu. Together they move backwards through the zodiac, spending about eighteen months in each sign. And because eclipses happen when a new or full Moon falls near either node, Ketu is as much an eclipse point as Rahu.
What Ketu means
Ketu is a shadow planet, so like Rahu, it acts through its sign lord, its nakshatra lord and the planets with it. The traditional saying is: Ketu behaves like Mars. Sharp, sudden, cutting. Ketu is called the moksha karaka, the significator of liberation. It signifies detachment and spiritual freedom.
It signifies inherited skill and instinct: what comes so naturally that it does not feel like an achievement. Many astrologers read it as learning from past lives. It signifies spirituality, meditation, mysticism and hidden knowledge, including astrology itself. It signifies sudden events, both endings and realisations. And it signifies precision: needles, surgery, mathematics, and code.
Ketu is single-pointed. Ketu rules three nakshatras: Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and its dasha lasts seven years. Like Rahu's, its exaltation and own sign are disputed between schools.
Ketu in love
In love, Ketu in or connected with the seventh house is traditionally read as detachment in partnership. A spiritual or unconventional bond, a partner who seems familiar from the very start, or a relationship that needs space to breathe. In Western astrology, contacts with the south node are said to feel strangely familiar and comfortable, as if you had known each other before. The tradition's advice is gentle. Ketu does not deny love.
It asks that love be free of clinging.
Ketu in career and money
In career, Ketu favours research, and technical, precise work: programming, mathematics, surgery and engineering detail. It favours spiritual and healing vocations, astrology, languages, and work behind the scenes. Ketu in the tenth house can describe a career that is a calling, or a person who cares more about the work than the title. With money, Ketu can feel like absence: less interest in the area of life it touches. But it is also a common signature of people who are gifted in a way they cannot explain.
The tradition's counsel is to treat Ketu's detachment as freedom rather than loss, and to put the skills it gives into service. Often that is exactly where the income comes from.
Ketu into Cancer
And Ketu right now. By the mean node, Ketu has been in Leo since May twenty twenty-five. On the fifth of December twenty twenty-six, it moves into Cancer, the Moon's sign of home, family and feeling, and Rahu moves into Capricorn. They stay there until June twenty twenty-eight. Astrologers read Ketu in Cancer as a time when attachment to the familiar is questioned, at home and within families, while ambition for status and systems runs high.
Classically, the nodes are most helpful in the third, sixth and eleventh houses from your Moon. From December, Ketu in Cancer gives that support to Taurus Moon in the third house, to Aquarius Moon in the sixth, where rivals and obstacles are said to fade, and to Virgo Moon in the eleventh, with gains through quieter, unexpected channels.
Recap
To recap. Ketu is the Moon's south node: the body without a head, the banner of light. It is detachment, instinct, inherited skill and liberation. It behaves like Mars, rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and its dasha lasts seven years. It does not deny; it frees.
And on the fifth of December, Ketu moves into Cancer. To see where Ketu sits in your own chart, make your free kundli at sunyra.ai. Thank you for watching. May you hold what matters, and let the rest go lightly.
