One factor, much worry

Few ideas in astrology cause as much worry in families as Mangal dosha. A chart is called manglik, and suddenly a marriage seems in doubt. So in this video, we take the honest view. What the rule actually says, and where it comes from. How common it really is, computed with the Sunyra engine.

What Mars in these houses describes. The classical cancellations. Two popular myths. And how to check it properly.

The rule

Mangal dosha, also called Kuja or Manglik dosha, is present when Mars occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house, counted from the ascendant. Many South Indian traditions add the second house. And many astrologers also count it from the Moon and from Venus. Here is the first honest point. The doctrine comes from later texts and regional practice, not from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

The list of houses differs between North and South Indian traditions, and authors differ on whether to count from the Moon and Venus at all.

How common is it?

Now the second honest point: how common it is. We asked the Sunyra engine, with twenty thousand random birth moments. Counted from the ascendant alone, with five houses, Mars falls in a dosha house in about five charts out of twelve. Add the second house, and it is about half of all people. Count from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus, and almost nine people in ten are manglik by at least one count.

A factor that applies to most people cannot be a rare warning sign. That is why many careful astrologers count it from the ascendant only, and always check the cancellations.

What it describes

So what does Mars in these houses actually describe? The traditional concern is Mars's heat in the houses of self, home, partnership, longevity and the bed, bringing friction to marriage. In modern practice, it is read as energy and assertiveness in partnership, which needs a matching temperament. That can mean passion, drive and courage, and sometimes friction. Mars is not a curse.

It is fire, and fire needs a good direction.

The cancellations

Then come the cancellations. Texts differ on the exact list, but these are the ones most often printed. Mars in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted, in Capricorn. Mars joined with Jupiter, or aspected by Jupiter. Mars in certain signs for certain houses.

For example, in the seventh house in Cancer or Capricorn, or in the twelfth in Taurus or Libra. The dosha falling only from the Moon or Venus, but not from the ascendant. And the partner also having Mangal dosha. When the Sunyra engine applies the commonly listed exceptions, about two in three manglik charts have at least one. Counted strictly, from the ascendant, with no listed exception at all, fewer than one chart in five remains.

Two myths

Now two popular beliefs. First: Mangal dosha goes away at twenty-eight. That is a popular belief, without classical basis. Second: two manglik partners are a bad match. In fact, classical practice says the opposite.

Two partners who both have strong Mars placements are traditionally considered well matched, and that is one of the cancellations. And like every yoga, it gives results mainly in the periods of the planet that forms it: here, the dashas and antardashas of Mars, a seven-year mahadasha.

Checking it properly

So how should it be checked? First from the ascendant, then from the Moon and Venus, and then every cancellation is listed: Mars's dignity, Jupiter's aspect, the sign-specific exceptions, and the partner's chart. The result is one factor with context, never a verdict on a marriage. The free kundli and the free matching tool on sunyra.ai check it this way. And if you would like both charts read together in depth, Sunyra's Marriage Report on sunyra.ai does that, from both sets of birth details.

Recap

To recap. Mangal dosha is Mars in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. It comes from later and regional tradition, not from Parashara. Counted every way, it applies to almost nine people in ten. It has many cancellations, including a partner who has it too.

And it does not disappear at twenty-eight. One factor, never a verdict. Thank you for watching. May your fire always have a good direction.
