In short: Mangal dosha (also Kuja or Manglik dosha) is the placement of Mars in certain houses, traditionally considered a concern in marriage matching. The rule differs by region, it has many classical cancellations, and counted the common way it applies to a large share of all people.
The rule
Mangal dosha is present when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — and, in many South Indian traditions, the 2nd — counted from the ascendant. Many astrologers also check it from the Moon and from Venus.
What it means
The traditional concern is that Mars's heat in houses of self, home, partnership, longevity and the bed brings friction to marriage. In modern practice it is read as energy and assertiveness in partnership that needs a matching temperament.
Why it is so often overstated
Counted from the ascendant alone, Mars falls in one of the five houses of the common list in about five charts out of twelve; adding the 2nd and counting from the Moon and Venus as well captures a large majority of all people. A factor that applies to most people cannot be a rare warning sign, which is why many careful astrologers count it from the ascendant only and always check cancellations.
What it actually describes
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th brings its heat to self, home, partnership, intimacy and private life. In practice that can mean passion, energy, assertiveness and sometimes friction. Two partners who both have strong Mars placements are traditionally considered well matched — which is one of the classical cancellations.
Checking it properly
Sunyra checks Mangal dosha from the ascendant first, then from the Moon and Venus, and lists any cancellations found — Mars's dignity, Jupiter's aspect, sign-specific exceptions, and the partner's chart. The result is shown as a factor with context, never as a verdict on a marriage.
What weakens or cancels it
Commonly cited cancellations include: Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation (Capricorn); Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter; Mars in certain signs for certain houses (for example in Cancer or Leo in particular houses, which texts list); the partner also having Mangal dosha; and the dosha falling only from the Moon or Venus but not the ascendant. Texts differ on the exact list.
Background
Few astrological ideas cause as much worry in families. Because counting from three reference points with five or six houses each captures most charts, many astrologers argue that the dosha must be read only from the ascendant, with cancellations, to mean anything at all.
When it gives results
A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Mars (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Mars 7 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Mars by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.
Related yogas
These yogas are often read alongside this one:
- Chandra-Mangala Yoga — Chandra-Mangala yoga forms when the Moon and Mars are together in one sign (and, in some texts, in mutual aspect).
- Ruchaka Yoga — Ruchaka yoga is formed by Mars in an angle in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn.
FAQ
Is Mangal dosha real? It is a traditional factor with many cancellations; it should never decide a marriage on its own.
Does Mangal dosha go away at 28? That is a popular belief without classical basis.
What if both partners have it? Classical practice treats that as a cancellation.
