Seven and a half years
Few words in Indian astrology cause as much worry as Sade Sati. It means seven and a half. And many people hear it only as a warning. The classical picture is far calmer. In this video: what Sade Sati really is, its three phases, the exact dates for every Moon sign, what the texts actually say, and do not say, the three things that change how it feels, and the honest truth about remedies.
What Sade Sati is
Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to circle the zodiac, spending roughly two and a half years in each sign. In Vedic transit reading, planets are counted from your Moon sign. When Saturn reaches the twelfth sign from your Moon, Sade Sati begins. It continues while Saturn crosses your Moon sign itself, and ends when Saturn leaves the second sign from it. Three signs, about two and a half years each: about seven and a half years.
Because the cycle repeats every twenty-nine or thirty years, most people go through Sade Sati two or three times in a lifetime. And it is based on your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, not your Western Sun sign.
The three phases
Sade Sati has three phases. The rising phase, with Saturn in the twelfth from your Moon, is traditionally linked with expenses, sleep, distance, endings and letting go. The peak phase, with Saturn on your Moon sign, is linked with emotional weight, responsibility, health habits and self-examination. And the setting phase, with Saturn in the second from your Moon, is linked with finances, family, speech, and consolidating what you have learned. These are themes, not events.
Many people notice the middle phase most, because Saturn sits directly on the Moon, the significator of the mind.
Dates for every Moon sign
Here are the dates, computed with the Sunyra engine. Right now, Saturn is in Pisces. So Aries Moon is in the first phase, from March twenty twenty-five to May twenty thirty-two. Pisces Moon is in the middle phase, until August twenty twenty-nine. And Aquarius Moon is in the last phase, which ends in June twenty twenty-seven, and finally in February twenty twenty-eight.
Next comes Taurus Moon, from June twenty twenty-seven to July twenty thirty-four. Then Gemini Moon, from August twenty twenty-nine. Cancer Moon, from May twenty thirty-two. Leo Moon, from July twenty thirty-four. Virgo Moon, from August twenty thirty-six.
And Libra Moon, from October twenty thirty-eight. Capricorn Moon finished its Sade Sati in March twenty twenty-five.
Dhaiya: the smaller cousins
North Indian practice also watches two shorter Saturn transits, each about two and a half years, called dhaiya: Saturn in the fourth and the eighth from the Moon. With Saturn in Pisces, these apply now to Sagittarius Moon, in the fourth, and Leo Moon, in the eighth. The same calm reading applies: responsibility at home, or change and introspection. Not curses.
What the texts actually say
The name Sade Sati is popular rather than classical. The classical text Phaladeepika lists Saturn as favourable only in the third, sixth and eleventh houses from the Moon, and unfavourable elsewhere. So Saturn is, by sign, unfavourable for most of its cycle, not only during Sade Sati. And the same chapter qualifies every transit with other factors that can greatly reduce its effect. Three things change how Sade Sati feels.
First, Saturn's role in your chart: for Taurus and Libra ascendants, Saturn is the yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart, and for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants it is the lagna lord. Second, the strength of your Moon: a strong Moon carries Saturn's weight more easily. And third, the dasha running: a supportive dasha softens Sade Sati.
How people live it
Ask people who have lived through Sade Sati, and you hear words like slow, serious, tiring, and clarifying. They take on responsibility, end what no longer works, build something slowly, and learn patience. Plenty of people marry, have children, buy homes and build careers during Sade Sati. And no rule says it is bad for marriage. Saturn's themes are commitment and responsibility, which suit marriage well.
The tradition's remedies follow Saturn's own logic: steady routines, honest work, service, charity to those who labour or are elderly, and prayer according to your own faith. These are practices of attention and discipline. Sade Sati is not a curse, and no ritual, gemstone or payment is required to get through it. Be wary of anyone who uses it to frighten you.
Recap
To recap. Sade Sati is Saturn's seven and a half years over the twelfth, first and second signs from your Moon. Right now, it is running for Aries, Pisces and Aquarius Moons, and Taurus Moon begins in June twenty twenty-seven. Its themes are responsibility and slow building, and your chart, your Moon and your dasha decide how it feels. It is a demanding season, not a curse.
