In short: Sade Sati ("seven and a half") is the period of about seven and a half years in which Saturn transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the sign after it — roughly two and a half years each. Popular astrology treats it as a time of hardship; the classical picture is more measured. Saturn's transits from the Moon are read as times of pressure, responsibility and slow work, which many people later describe as the most formative years of their lives. As of October 2026, Saturn is in sidereal Pisces, so Sade Sati is running for Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs.
What Sade Sati is
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, spending roughly two and a half years in each sign. In Vedic transit reading (gochara), planets' movements are counted from the natal Moon sign. When Saturn reaches the 12th sign from the Moon, Sade Sati begins; it continues while Saturn crosses the Moon's own sign, and ends when Saturn leaves the 2nd sign from the Moon. Three signs × about 2.5 years ≈ 7.5 years.
Because the cycle repeats every 29–30 years, most people experience Sade Sati two or three times in a lifetime.
The name is popular rather than classical. Phaladeepika's chapter on transits (ch. 26) treats Saturn's passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon as unfavourable houses for Saturn, alongside its 4th and 8th (see dhaiya below); the grouping of the three into a single "seven-and-a-half" period is a later popular framing that has become universal.
The three phases
| Phase | Saturn transits | Traditional themes |
|---|---|---|
| Rising (first) | the 12th from the Moon | expenses, sleep, distance, endings, letting go |
| Peak (second) | the Moon sign itself | emotional weight, responsibility, health habits, self-examination |
| Setting (third) | the 2nd from the Moon | finances, family, speech, consolidating what was learned |
These are themes, not events. Many people notice the second phase most, because Saturn sits directly on the Moon, the significator of the mind.
Sade Sati dates for every Moon sign
Dates below are computed from the sidereal (Lahiri) positions of Saturn. Where Saturn crosses a sign boundary, retrogrades back and crosses again, both dates are given; the period is usually counted from the first entry. Dates in UTC; local dates can differ by a day.

Dhaiya: Saturn in the 4th and 8th from the Moon
North Indian practice also watches Saturn's 2½-year transits of the 4th and 8th signs from the Moon, called dhaiya ("two and a half") or kantaka and ashtama Shani. With Saturn in Pisces (2025–2027), these apply to Sagittarius Moons (4th) and Leo Moons (8th). The same calm reading applies: they are periods of responsibility at home (4th) or of change and introspection (8th), not curses.
What the texts actually say, and what they do not
Phaladeepika's transit rules list Saturn as favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon and unfavourable elsewhere — so Saturn is "unfavourable" by sign for most of its cycle, not only during Sade Sati. The same chapter qualifies every transit with vedha (obstruction by other planets) and the ashtakavarga points of the sign, both of which can greatly reduce a transit's effect. A modern reading that announces disaster from Sade Sati alone has dropped those qualifications.
Three further factors change the picture:
- Saturn's role in your chart. For Taurus and Libra ascendants Saturn is a yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart; for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants it is the lagna lord. Many astrologers read Sade Sati more kindly for these charts.
- Your Moon's strength. A strong, well-aspected Moon is read as carrying Saturn's weight more easily.
- The dasha running. Transits work through the dasha. A supportive dasha softens Sade Sati; a difficult one makes it more noticeable.
How people describe it
Ask people who have lived through Sade Sati and you hear words like slow, serious, tiring, clarifying. Common experiences include taking on responsibility (for parents, children or work), ending what no longer works, building something slowly, and learning patience. Plenty of people marry, have children, buy homes and build careers during Sade Sati. It is better understood as a demanding season than a dangerous one.
Remedies, honestly
The tradition associates Saturn with discipline, service and the welfare of working people and elders. The remedies it recommends follow that logic: steady routines, honest work, service, charity (especially to those who labour or are elderly), and mantra or prayer according to one's own faith — many people recite the Hanuman Chalisa or Shani mantras on Saturdays. These are practices of attention, not transactions. Blue sapphire (neelam) is traditionally recommended only after a full chart is read, and never as a Sade Sati remedy by default.
FAQ
Is my Sade Sati based on my Moon sign or Sun sign? On your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. Western Sun signs are not used.
Which phase is the hardest? Many people notice the second phase most, when Saturn transits the Moon sign itself. Experiences vary widely with the chart and dasha.
Is Sade Sati bad for marriage? No rule says so. Many people marry during Sade Sati. Saturn's themes are commitment and responsibility, which suit marriage well.
Why do websites give different dates? Different ayanamsas, and different choices about whether to count from Saturn's first entry into a sign or its final entry after retrograde. We give both.
Does Western astrology have Sade Sati? No. Western astrologers watch Saturn's transits to natal planets, especially the Saturn return around ages 29 and 58.
