The house of what you keep
Earning money and keeping money are two different things. In Vedic astrology, the house of what you keep, your savings, your possessions and your family's resources, is the second house. The second house is called dhana bhava, the house of wealth. It is also the house of speech, of food, and of the family you grew up in. In this video: what the second house means, where your money comes from according to its lord, what each planet in the second house brings, how astrologers read wealth from several houses together, and why your words and your wealth share one house.
What the second house means
The classical texts give the second house wealth, family, speech, food and the face. It is one of the main wealth houses, together with the eleventh house of gains, the fifth and ninth houses of fortune, and the first house, the self. When the lords of these houses connect, they form the classical dhana yogas, the combinations for wealth. In Western astrology, the second house is livelihood, possessions and money, and modern astrologers add something important: personal values, and self-worth. What you value, what you feel you are worth, and how you use what you have.
Why words and wealth share a house
Why is speech in the same house as money? The tradition's answer is practical. How you speak shapes how others trust you, and trust is the foundation of wealth. The second house describes how a person speaks: how truthfully, how sweetly, and how wisely. It also describes the early family home, its food and its habits, which shape our first ideas about money.
Many astrologers say: heal your speech, and you strengthen your second house.
Where your money comes from
The lord of the second house shows where wealth comes from, and how it is used. In the tenth house, income through career. In the eleventh, through gains and networks. In the fifth or ninth, through learning, creativity or good fortune. In the seventh, through partnership or trade.
And in the twelfth, high spending, or earnings from abroad. The strength of the second lord, and its connection with the lords of the first, fifth, ninth and eleventh houses, are the keys to classical wealth judgements.
Planets in the second house
Now the planets in the second house. The Sun gives earnings connected with authority or government, and a forceful way of speaking. The Moon gives a fluctuating income, a pleasant voice, and emotional ties to family and food. Mars gives earning through effort and enterprise, and sharp speech. Mercury gives skill with words and numbers, and earnings through trade, writing or teaching.
Jupiter, the natural significator of wealth, is at home here: wealth, wise speech, and a supportive family are its classical themes. Venus gives a sweet voice, a love of fine food and beautiful things, and money through the arts. Saturn gives slow, steady saving, and a frugal, serious manner. Rahu brings unusual or foreign sources of income. And Ketu brings detachment from possessions, and sometimes a gift for precise or spiritual speech.
Reading wealth properly
Here is how astrologers read wealth properly. Not from one house, but from four, with the ascendant: the second for accumulated wealth, the eleventh for gains and income, and the fifth and ninth for merit and fortune, the Lakshmi houses. The sixth, eighth and twelfth houses show how wealth is borrowed, shared or spent. A chart with a strong second and eleventh, but a heavy twelfth, is read as earning well, and spending readily. And as always, the dasha decides when the promise opens.
A strong wealth yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it.
