In short: The 2nd house is the house of resources: money earned and saved, possessions, food, family of origin, speech and — in modern Western astrology — personal values and self-worth. Vedic astrology calls it dhana bhava, the house of wealth, and also the house of vak, speech, and kutumba, family. It describes what sustains a person and what they have to give.

What the second house means
In Vedic astrology
BPHS ch. 11 gives the 2nd house wealth, the family, speech, food, the face and the right eye, among other things, and ch. 13 is devoted to judging it. It is one of the main wealth houses (dhana sthana), together with the 11th (gains), the 5th and 9th (fortune) and the 1st. Combinations between the lords of these houses are the basis of the classical dhana yogas, combinations for wealth.
The 2nd also governs speech — how a person speaks, how truthfully and how sweetly — and the early family environment, including food and the habits of the household. In matching and longevity techniques, the 2nd and 7th are called maraka ("death-inflicting") houses; this is a technical term used in classical calculations of life span, not a prediction to be feared, and Sunyra does not offer longevity forecasts.
In Western astrology
Hellenistic astrologers called the 2nd place the "Gate of Hades" — it lies just below the eastern horizon, still in the dark part of the chart — and associated it with livelihood and the means of life (Paulus Alexandrinus; Firmicus Maternus, Mathesis II.19). Lilly gives it "the estate or fortune of him that asks", his wealth and moveable goods. Modern Western astrology adds personal values and self-worth: what we value, what we feel we are worth, and how we use our resources.
The lord of the second house
The 2nd lord shows where wealth comes from and how it is used. Placed in the 10th, it suggests income through career; in the 11th, through gains and networks; in the 5th or 9th, through learning, creativity or good fortune; in the 7th, through partnership or trade; in the 12th, high expenditure or earnings abroad. BPHS ch. 24 describes the 2nd lord in each house. Its dignity and relationship with the lords of the 1st, 5th, 9th and 11th are the key to classical wealth judgements.
Planets in the second house
- Sun — earnings connected with authority or government; a forceful way of speaking.
- Moon — fluctuating income, a pleasant voice, emotional ties to family and food.
- Mars — earning through effort and enterprise; sharp speech; one of the placements counted in some Mangal dosha lists (especially in South India).
- Mercury — skill with words and numbers; earnings through trade, writing or teaching.
- Jupiter — the natural significator in its own house; wealth, wisdom in speech and a supportive family are classical themes.
- Venus — a sweet voice, love of fine food and beautiful things, and money through the arts.
- Saturn — slow, steady accumulation; a serious or blunt manner of speech; frugality.
- Rahu — unusual or foreign sources of income, unconventional speech or diet.
- Ketu — detachment from family or possessions; sometimes a gift for precise or spiritual speech.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (Western) — respectively irregular or inventive income; idealism or vagueness about money; intense focus on resources and power.
Transits through the second house
In Vedic transit practice (gochara), Phaladeepika (ch. 26) lists the 2nd house from the natal Moon as favourable for Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — traditionally times when earnings, family life and speech go well. Saturn's transit of the 2nd from the Moon is the last phase of Sade Sati, often read as a time of consolidating finances and family responsibilities. In Western practice, Jupiter transiting the 2nd house is associated with growing resources, and Saturn with budgeting, restructuring and learning what one truly values.
A worked example
Suppose a chart has Leo rising. The 2nd house is then Virgo, ruled by Mercury. If Mercury sits in the 11th house (Gemini), its own sign, the 2nd lord is strong and placed in the house of gains: a classical indication that income can come through communication, networks and skill. If Jupiter also aspects the 2nd, the significator supports the house. During a Mercury dasha or antardasha, the astrologer would expect financial and family themes to be active. The same chart with Mercury debilitated in the 8th would tell a different story — potential that needs patience and effort to unlock.
Questions to ask of the second house
Which sign is on the 2nd, and where is its lord? Is Jupiter, the significator, strong? Which planets occupy or aspect the 2nd? How do the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th relate? And which dasha is running? Wealth is never read from one factor.
In relationships
The 2nd house describes the family a person comes from and the household they build, and in Vedic astrology it is read for family life after marriage (kutumba) as well. It also describes how a person speaks to those they love. In Western astrology it shows what a person values — often the real basis of compatibility.
In career
The 2nd house is income and assets; the 10th is the career itself; the 11th is gains. A career is read with all three. A strong 2nd house supports earning through speech (teaching, law, sales, broadcasting), food, finance and family business.
Health as wellbeing
In Vedic astrology the 2nd house relates to the face, mouth, teeth, right eye and food — so as wellbeing it is about nourishment: eating well, speaking kindly, and caring for the senses. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
Counting from the second house
Using the bhavat bhavam principle, the 2nd from the 2nd — the 3rd — is read as a supporting factor for wealth; and the 2nd is the 12th from the 3rd, so it is sometimes read as the expenditure of one's effort. These are refinements used by experienced astrologers rather than rules for beginners.
Speech, food and the family table
The Vedic 2nd house gathers three things that might seem unrelated — money, speech and food — and the link is the mouth. What we take in and what we give out through the mouth sustains us: food, words, and the household economy built around the family table. Classical texts therefore read the 2nd for the quality of a person's speech as much as for the size of their savings. Benefics here are traditionally associated with sweet, truthful speech and a well-provided home; malefics with harsh words or irregular meals, which the person can consciously soften. Many astrologers find this one of the most practical houses to work with: changing how we speak and eat is within reach.
Wealth combinations
Classical texts give many dhana yogas: for example, the lords of the 2nd and 11th exchanging signs or joining in a good house, or the lord of the 2nd joining the lords of the 5th or 9th. Phaladeepika and BPHS list such combinations at length. They indicate potential, which the dasha periods and a person's own efforts bring into being — they are not promises of riches.
House systems
In whole-sign houses (the Vedic default and the oldest Western system), the 2nd house is the whole sign after the rising sign. In quadrant systems such as Placidus, it begins at the 2nd cusp, which can fall in a different sign. When a planet changes house between systems, Sunyra shows both.
Vedic and Western views compared
Both traditions read the 2nd house as money and possessions. Vedic astrology adds speech, food, family and the face, and treats it as part of the wealth houses and the maraka pair; modern Western astrology adds personal values and self-worth. Hellenistic astrology's "Gate of Hades" name is a reminder that house meanings have shifted over time.
FAQ
Is the 2nd house only about money? No. In Vedic astrology it is equally about family, speech and food; in modern Western astrology, about values and self-worth.
What is a maraka house? A technical term for the 2nd and 7th houses in classical longevity calculations. It is not a prediction and is never used by Sunyra to forecast death.
Which planet is the karaka of the 2nd house? Jupiter.
What does the 2nd lord in the 11th mean? Classically, a connection between earnings and gains — one of the simplest wealth combinations.
Does the 2nd house show inheritance? Inheritance is mainly an 8th-house matter, though the 2nd shows family wealth more generally.
