In short: Sarala yoga is one of the three viparita raja yogas — 'reversed' royal combinations in which difficulty turns into gain. It forms when the lord of the 8th house occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th house.
The rule
Sarala yoga forms when the 8th lord is placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house (Phaladeepika ch. 6). The three viparita yogas are Harsha (6th lord), Sarala (8th lord) and Vimala (12th lord).

What it means
Phaladeepika describes Sarala yoga as giving long life, fearlessness, learning and prosperity. In modern terms: the planet of crisis is contained, and the person becomes resilient in crises.
Reading it
The 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th contains the house of crises and sudden events; Phaladeepika's description of fearlessness and long life fits a person who becomes steady in difficulty. Its value depends on the lagna lord being strong.
What weakens or cancels it
The yoga is weakened when the dusthana lord is also the lagna lord or a trine lord whose good significations then suffer, when joined with other house lords, or when the lagna lord is weak.
Background
The idea of viparita — reversal — is one of the subtler principles in Parashari astrology: a malefic lord placed in a malefic house can harm the house's negative significations, so trouble is cancelled by trouble. It is a reminder that houses and lords interact, not just planets.
When it gives results
A lordship yoga gives its results in the dashas of the planets that form it in the individual chart — the house lords named in the rule. Their Vimshottari mahadashas range from 6 years (the Sun) to 20 (Venus); a yoga whose planets' dashas fall in childhood or very late in life is felt less than one whose dashas run in the active years. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when it becomes visible.
Checking it in a chart
To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of the planets that form it by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.
How to read it honestly
Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

FAQ
What is the difference between Harsha, Sarala and Vimala? They are formed by the 6th, 8th and 12th lords respectively, each placed in a dusthana.
Is Sarala yoga common? Fairly; whether it delivers depends on the lagna lord's strength and the planets' other lordships.
