In short: Adhi yoga forms when the natural benefics — Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th signs from the Moon. It is traditionally linked with leadership, prosperity and a position of authority.

The rule

Adhi yoga forms when Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th signs from the Moon (in any arrangement among those three signs).

What it means

Classical texts describe the person as a leader, minister or commander, prosperous, courteous and long-lived. In modern terms it describes benefics supporting the mind from the houses of service, partnership and transformation — help that comes through others.

Why the 6th, 7th and 8th

These three houses lie opposite the Moon, across the chart. Planets there aspect the Moon or the houses beside it, so benefics in them support the mind from a distance — through other people, partners and shared resources. That is the logic behind classical descriptions of Adhi yoga as leadership: support comes from those one leads or serves.

Grading by number

Brihat Jataka grades the result by how many benefics form it: with all three the person is described as a king, with two a minister, with one a commander — images of decreasing scope. Modern astrologers read this as the strength of support available, and also check each benefic's dignity, combustion and aspects.

From the ascendant

Some authors also count Adhi yoga from the ascendant: benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses of the chart. Benefics in the 6th and 8th are classically less comfortable than in angles and trines, so this version is read with care; from the Moon, the yoga is the classical lunar combination described by Varahamihira.

What strengthens it

The yoga is strongest when the benefics are dignified, unafflicted and not combust, and when the Moon is bright.

What weakens or cancels it

Combustion, debility or affliction of the benefics weakens it; so does a dark or afflicted Moon.

Background

Adhi yoga is one of the most prized lunar yogas in Brihat Jataka. Its logic is that the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon face the Moon from across the sky; benefics there aspect and support the mind. The grading by number of benefics — commander, minister or king in the classical images — is an early example of astrology weighting a yoga by its strength.

When it gives results

A yoga gives its results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form it. Here that means the mahadashas and antardashas of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus (Vimshottari mahadasha lengths: Mercury 17 years; Jupiter 16 years; Venus 20 years). Within those periods, transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the planets or houses involved often mark the moments when the yoga becomes visible.

Checking it in a chart

To judge this yoga in a real chart, Sunyra checks, in order: that the formation rule is met exactly (by sign, using whole-sign houses); the dignity of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus by sign and in the navamsa; combustion, retrogression and planetary war; aspects from natural benefics and malefics; the houses the planets rule for the ascendant; Shadbala strength; and the running and coming dashas. A yoga that passes these checks is described with confidence; one that does not is described as weak or partial.

How to read it honestly

Like every yoga, this one describes a potential. Whether and when it shows depends on the strength of the planets involved, the houses they rule, aspects from benefics and malefics, the divisional charts, and the dashas of the planets that form it. Classical texts list hundreds of yogas, and most charts contain several; no single yoga decides a life.

These yogas are often read alongside this one:

  • Gajakesari Yoga — Gajakesari yoga — 'elephant and lion' — forms when Jupiter is in an angle (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Moon.
  • Kemadruma Yoga — Kemadruma yoga forms when there are no planets in the signs on either side of the Moon (the 2nd and 12th from it).
  • Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara Yogas — Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara are the three lunar yogas formed by planets beside the Moon.
  • Chandra-Mangala Yoga — Chandra-Mangala yoga forms when the Moon and Mars are together in one sign (and, in some texts, in mutual aspect).
  • Shakata Yoga — Shakata yoga — 'cart' yoga — forms when the Moon is in the 6th, 8th or 12th sign from Jupiter.

FAQ

Do all three benefics have to be present? For the full yoga, yes; texts allow lesser forms with fewer.

Is Adhi yoga counted from the ascendant? Mainly from the Moon; some authors also count it from the ascendant.
