In short: With Cancer rising, the chart begins in the Moon's watery sign: a caring, protective, intuitive and family-centred temperament. Mars becomes the yogakaraka, ruling the 5th and 10th.

At a glance

Rising sign Cancer (Karka) — water, movable
Lagna lord (chart ruler) The moon
Yogakaraka Mars (rules an angle and a trine)
Maraka lords (2nd and 7th) Saturn and Sun — a technical term in longevity calculations, not a prediction
Badhaka lord (later tradition) Venus, lord of the 11th (Prashna Marga rule for movable signs)
Nakshatras of the rising degree Punarvasu (0°–3°20′); Pushya (3°20′–16°40′); Ashlesha (16°40′–30°)
Opposite sign (7th house) Capricorn

Temperament and presence

Cancer rising traditionally gives a gentle, receptive presence and a face that shows feeling. Classical descriptions emphasise kindness, attachment to home and changeable moods. Because the Moon is the lagna lord, its brightness and placement — always fast-changing — matter more here than in any other ascendant.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: empathy, loyalty, intuition, protectiveness and care.

Challenges: moodiness, defensiveness and over-attachment.

Relationships, work and wellbeing

Relationships: the 7th house is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn — partners often bring structure, maturity and commitment.

Work: the 10th is Aries, ruled by Mars, the yogakaraka: careers that need initiative, courage and leadership, or that protect others.

Wellbeing: Cancer is the heart in the cosmic person; emotional security supports health. Not medical advice.

The house signs and their lords

With Cancer rising, every house is fixed (whole-sign houses), and each takes the lord of its sign:

House Sign Lord
1st — self, body and vitality Cancer Moon
2nd — wealth, family, food and speech Leo Sun
3rd — courage, siblings, skills and communication Virgo Mercury
4th — home, mother, property and inner peace Libra Venus
5th — children, creativity, intelligence and merit Scorpio Mars
6th — work, service, health habits, debts and rivals Sagittarius Jupiter
7th — marriage, partners and contracts Capricorn Saturn
8th — transformation, shared resources and the hidden Aquarius Saturn
9th — fortune, faith, teachers and long journeys Pisces Jupiter
10th — career, status and action in the world Aries Mars
11th — gains, friends, networks and wishes Taurus Venus
12th — expenditure, retreat, foreign lands and liberation Gemini Mercury

Which planets help and which challenge

Parashari astrology judges a planet's functional nature for each ascendant from the houses it rules (BPHS ch. 34). The general rules: lords of trines (1st, 5th, 9th) are favourable; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are difficult; the 8th lord is difficult (the Sun and Moon excepted); natural benefics that rule angles lose some benefic quality and natural malefics that rule angles lose some malefic quality; lords of the 2nd and 12th take the results of their associations. Applied to Cancer rising:

Planet Houses ruled Functional nature (general rules)
Sun 2nd neutral (takes the results of its associations) · maraka
Moon 1st benefic (lagna lord)
Mars 5th, 10th yogakaraka (best)
Mercury 3rd, 12th difficult (rules 3rd)
Jupiter 6th, 9th mixed (trine lord with a difficult house)
Venus 4th, 11th difficult (rules 11th)
Saturn 7th, 8th difficult (rules 8th) · maraka
Rahu — acts through its dispositor and conjunctions
Ketu — acts through its dispositor and conjunctions

Mars, ruling the 5th and 10th, is the yogakaraka — powerful for Cancer rising even though Mars is debilitated in Cancer itself. Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th, a mixed lordship, though many astrologers treat Jupiter as broadly favourable here. Saturn (7th and 8th) and Venus (4th and 11th) are functionally difficult under the general rules; Mercury (3rd and 12th) is also challenging.

The lagna lord

The moon, as ruler of Cancer, is the single most important planet in a Cancer-rising chart. Its sign shows how comfortably the person's vitality and intentions can express themselves, and its house shows where life's energy naturally goes. A strong Moon — in its own sign, exalted, in an angle or trine, aspected by benefics — is traditionally read as robust health and self-direction; a weak or afflicted Moon asks for more care and patience.

Yogas in the rising sign

A planet in the 1st house in its own sign or exaltation forms one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. With Cancer rising, that is possible for: Hamsa yoga (by Jupiter). In the rising sign itself, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and Mars is debilitated in Cancer, so a planet placed there is read with that dignity.

Rising sign, Moon sign and Sun sign

Vedic astrology reads the chart from the lagna and also from the Moon (Chandra lagna). A Cancer ascendant with the Moon in a very different sign gives two frames that the astrologer blends: the lagna for the body, circumstances and how life unfolds, the Moon for the mind and feelings. Because Vedic charts are sidereal, a person who is Cancer rising in a Vedic chart is often Leo rising in a Western chart; the ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and latitude, so an accurate birth time matters.

The Western view

In Western astrology a Cancer ascendant gives a nurturing, sensitive persona, with the Moon as chart ruler. Many Vedic Cancer risings are Leo rising in a tropical chart.
