In short: Mars with Rahu joins energy and appetite. The combination tends to give intense drive, daring and unconventional courage — and impulsiveness and risk when strained.
At a glance
| Planets | Mars (Mangal) and Rahu |
| Natures | Mars: natural malefic; Rahu: natural malefic |
| Natural relationship (BPHS) | not defined for the nodes; Rahu acts through Mars and its dispositor |
| Mutual sub-period | Rahu antardasha in Mars mahadasha: about 1 year 1 month |
How the two blend
Rahu magnifies Mars's heat. Later texts call the pair Angaraka yoga, a popular label; classical cautions concern haste, conflict and accidents. Mars's sign dignity and Rahu's dispositor are key; in Capricorn Mars is exalted.
The nodes sit outside the friendship table, so Rahu simply takes up Mars's significations and those of its dispositor. Put simply, energy, courage, land, siblings and the drive to act meet desire, ambition, the foreign, the new and the unconventional.
Strengths and challenges
Strengths: daring, technical innovation, energy and courage.
Challenges: impulsiveness, conflict and risk-taking.
The gifts to build on: the nerve to begin what others only talk about, and the boldness to break a pattern no one else questions. The shadows to watch: temper and haste, and never feeling it is enough.
Love and marriage
For love, the short version: intense; patience helps. The pair asks a partner to meet two sets of needs: Mars brings passion and protectiveness, and needs a partner who can take directness, and Rahu draws unconventional or cross-cultural attractions and intense, obsessive feelings. Mars in the pair adds passion and, in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, a Mangal dosha consideration that is always checked from the Moon and Venus as well. Rahu with Mars makes attraction intense and sometimes unconventional. Placed in the 7th house itself, the pair describes the partner as carrying both planets' qualities; in the 5th it shapes romance; in the 12th, private life and intimacy.
Career and money
Professionally it favours technology, engineering, sport and the military. Fields that combine the two work best: Mars suits engineering, defence, surgery, sport, property, police and any work with fire or tools, while Rahu suits technology, foreign work, media, politics, aviation and anything new or disruptive. Rahu rules no sign, so the pair forms no lordship yoga by itself; it amplifies whatever Mars rules for the ascendant, and in KP practice gives Mars's results. With money, earning is energetic and impulsive; property and hard assets suit it better than loose cash, and windfalls and sudden losses are both possible, so caution with risk is wise.
Health and wellbeing
Tradition's advice for this pair: care with speed and stimulants. Mars is linked with blood, muscles, inflammation, injuries and fevers; Rahu with unusual or hard-to-diagnose complaints, anxiety and addictions. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

The sign sets each planet's dignity, which changes the conjunction more than anything else. By combined dignity it is strongest in Aries and Capricorn and hardest in Cancer.

By house
The house shows where in life the conjunction works. Weighing angles, trines, growth houses, directional strength and natural significators, it does best in the 3rd, 10th and 11th and asks most care in the 8th and 12th. Mars has directional strength in the 10th. In the 7th it is a marriage statement, in the 10th a career statement, and in the 2nd or 11th a money statement. With a natural malefic in the pair, the 3rd, 6th and 11th (upachaya) houses are classically good: difficulties turn into drive.
In the dashas
In Vimshottari terms, watch the Mars and Rahu mahadashas (7 and 18 years), and especially the Mars–Rahu and Rahu–Mars antardashas of about 1 year 1 month each. Classically Mars matures around age 28 and Rahu around 42, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.
What else changes it
- Degree. The closer the two are in degree, the more they merge; most astrologers give a conjunction within a few degrees more weight.
- Aspects. Jupiter's aspect on the pair protects; Saturn's slows and tests; Mars's energises.
- Nakshatra and navamsa. Each planet's nakshatra lord and navamsa sign refine the result.
The Western view
In Western astrology Mars conjunct the North Node is read as drive aligned with life direction.
FAQ
Is Mars–Rahu 'Angaraka yoga'? That is a later popular name; the combination is intense and needs constructive outlets.
Is the Mars–Rahu conjunction good for marriage? Not by itself either way: the 7th house, the 7th lord and Venus decide marriage. The pair matters most when it sits in or rules the 7th. Intense; patience helps.
Does Rahu with Mars form a yoga? Rahu has no lordship, so it forms no lordship yoga by itself; it magnifies the yogas Mars is part of for the ascendant.
When does the Mars–Rahu conjunction give results? In the Mars and Rahu mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 1 year 1 month.
Does it matter how close Mars and Rahu are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
