In short: The Sun and Mars together combine two fiery friends: will and energy. The combination tends to give courage, drive, ambition and leadership — and heat, impatience and conflict when strained.

At a glance

Planets The Sun (Surya) and Mars (Mangal)
Natures The Sun: natural malefic; Mars: natural malefic
Natural relationship (BPHS) The Sun sees Mars as friend; Mars sees the Sun as friend
Combustion Mars is combust within about 17° of the Sun (Surya Siddhanta orbs; texts vary)
Mutual sub-period Mars antardasha in Sun mahadasha: about 4 months

How the two blend

The Sun and Mars are natural friends in BPHS, and both are fiery malefics. Joined, they make a powerful, active combination often linked with leadership, the military, surgery, engineering and sport. Classical descriptions of the pair stress valour and a quick temper. In Aries both are strong (Mars at home, the Sun exalted); in Leo the Sun is at home and Mars a friend; in Cancer Mars is debilitated and the heat turns inward; in Libra the Sun is debilitated.

By BPHS natural relationships the two are mutual friends, which sets how easily they share a sign. The Sun brings identity, authority, the father and the will to shine; Mars brings energy, courage, land, siblings and the drive to act.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: courage, decisiveness, energy and leadership.

Challenges: aggression, impatience, accidents from haste and conflict with authority.

Its higher expression joins moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right with the nerve to begin what others only talk about; its lower one mixes pride that cannot admit a mistake with temper and haste.

Love and marriage

For love, the short version: passionate and protective; patience prevents quarrels. The Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time. Mars brings passion and protectiveness, and needs a partner who can take directness. Joined, those two needs have to share one relationship. Mars in the pair adds passion and, in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, a Mangal dosha consideration that is always checked from the Moon and Venus as well. Check whether the pair includes the 7th lord: the Sun is the 7th lord for Aquarius rising; Mars is the 7th lord for Taurus and Libra rising. In those charts it is a primary marriage factor. Placed in the 7th house itself, the pair describes the partner as carrying both planets' qualities; in the 5th it shapes romance; in the 12th, private life and intimacy.

Career and money

For career, the combination favours the armed forces, surgery, engineering, sport and leadership. The Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name. Mars suits engineering, defence, surgery, sport, property, police and any work with fire or tools. The pair does well where these meet. By lordship the pair forms a raja yoga (an angle lord with a trine lord) for Aries, Leo and Scorpio rising, a classical marker of rise and recognition, strongest in an angle or trine. For Cancer and Libra rising the pair joins wealth-house lords, a dhana yoga. Look closely if the Sun rules the 10th for Scorpio rising; or Mars rules the 10th for Cancer and Aquarius rising: then it is a primary career factor. On wealth, money tends to follow authority and position, while money is earned through effort, risk and property, and spent just as quickly.

Health and wellbeing

Tradition's advice for this pair: heat and inflammation are traditional associations; rest and cooling habits help. The Sun is linked with vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone; Mars with blood, muscles, inflammation, injuries and fevers. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

By sign

The sign sets each planet's dignity, which changes the conjunction more than anything else. By combined dignity it is strongest in Aries and hardest in Libra.

Taurus enemy's sign (Venus) neutral sign (Venus)
Gemini neutral sign (Mercury) enemy's sign (Mercury)
Cancer friend's sign (the Moon) debilitated (deepest at 28°)

By rising sign: what the pair rules

Here is what each planet rules for each rising sign, and the classical combination that results:

Rising sign The Sun rules Mars rules Combination
Aries 5th 1st and 8th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Taurus 4th 7th and 12th —
Gemini 3rd 6th and 11th —
Cancer 2nd 5th and 10th dhana yoga (wealth-house lords)
Leo 1st 4th and 9th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Virgo 12th 3rd and 8th —
Libra 11th 2nd and 7th dhana yoga (wealth-house lords)
Scorpio 10th 1st and 6th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Sagittarius 9th 5th and 12th —
Capricorn 8th 4th and 11th —
Aquarius 7th 3rd and 10th —
Pisces 6th 2nd and 9th —

By house

By house, the pair is most at home in the 10th, 3rd and 1st, and needs most care in the 8th and 12th. The Sun has directional strength in the 10th; Mars has directional strength in the 10th. For the questions people ask most: the 7th house ties it to the spouse, the 10th to career, the 2nd and 11th to income. Because the pair includes a malefic, the upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 11th) improve it over time.

In the dashas

In Vimshottari terms, watch the Sun and Mars mahadashas (6 and 7 years), and especially the Sun–Mars and Mars–Sun antardashas of about 4 months each. Classically the Sun matures around age 22 and Mars around 28, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.

What else changes it

  • Degree. Planets within a few degrees blend strongly; at opposite ends of a sign they share it more loosely.
  • Aspects. Aspects modify it: Jupiter protects, Saturn tests, Mars stirs.
  • Nakshatra and navamsa. Each planet's nakshatra lord and navamsa sign refine the result.
  • Combustion. Within about 17° of the Sun, Mars is combust and its significations are partly absorbed into the Sun's agenda.

The Western view

In Western astrology a Sun–Mars conjunction gives a forceful, assertive, competitive personality with abundant drive.
