Chalisa · Bhairav
Shri Bhairav Chalisa: lyrics with meaning
A hymn of praise to Bhairava, the form of Shiva who guards the holy city of Kashi and his devotees. Below is the full text in Hindi, the same in English letters, and a plain meaning for every verse.
Listen: Bhairav Chalisa
A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.
Who Bhairava is, and what the chalisa is
Bhairava (Bhairav) is a form of Shiva. The Puranas tell that he appeared from Shiva to humble the pride of Brahma, and that he then wandered until he reached Kashi (Varanasi), where he was freed and made the city's guardian. That is why he is called Kashi ke Kotwal, the keeper of Kashi, and why pilgrims traditionally greet him before visiting Kashi Vishwanath. He is pictured dark, with a trident, a damaru drum and a staff, and a dog as his companion.
He is known in two loved forms: Batuk Bhairava, a gentle child, and Kaal Bhairava, Time itself, who protects. His appearance is fierce, but to his devotees he is a guardian who takes away fear, much as a strict but loving watchman keeps a household safe.
A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple old Hindi. This Bhairav Chalisa opens with two dohas, has thirty-six chaupais and closes with a doha. It praises his forms and colours, lists many of his names, recalls his place in Kashi, and in its last verses names its poet: Sundardas, who lived by the hermitage of the sage Durvasa near Prayag. A poet of the same name and place signs the Navagraha Chalisa, and “Ramsundar” the Ganesh and Shani chalisas; nothing more is known about him, and the hymn has long been sung as a traditional text.
Many families recite it on Sundays or on Kaal Bhairav Ashtami, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Each verse is given in Hindi, in English letters, and with a short meaning: two opening dohas, thirty-six chaupais and a closing doha. Several chaupais are strings of Bhairava's names; a few of these are kept as printed even where their exact form is uncertain (see Sources).

Questions
Who wrote the Bhairav Chalisa?
The poet names himself in the last chaupais: Sundardas, who lived near the hermitage of Durvasa by Prayag. The same poet signs the Navagraha Chalisa, which adds that he lived in the village of Kakra. Nothing else is recorded about him.
Why is Bhairava called the Kotwal of Kashi?
A kotwal is a town's chief of watch. Tradition holds that Shiva made Bhairava the guardian of Kashi, so he keeps the city and its people safe, and pilgrims greet him at the Kaal Bhairav temple in Varanasi.
What is the difference between Batuk Bhairava and Kaal Bhairava?
They are two forms of the same deity: Batuk Bhairava is the gentle child form, Kaal Bhairava the form of Time, the protector. The chalisa praises both, and calls him white, red and dark, the colours of his different forms.
Is there more than one Bhairav Chalisa?
Yes. A second, different hymn begins “Shri Bhairav sankat haran, mangal karan kripalu, karahu daya nij daas pe” and is printed in some booklets and on Drik Panchang. This page gives the one by Sundardas, which begins “Shri Ganapati guru Gauri pad”.
Text and sources
The text was compared line by line across three published versions: Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org), Sanskrit Documents (sanskritdocuments.org, “shrI bhairava chAlIsA”) and Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com). All three agree almost letter for letter, including their unusual name-forms, so they most likely go back to one printed edition; we follow their shared reading.
Variants: opening doha Gauri (Bhakti Bharat Gauri with a long vowel), karaun (Bhakti Bharat karo); ch. 5 hvai (also havai); ch. 12 kataaksh (one source misprints it); ch. 15 bam (one source ban, with the nasal sign); ch. 23 Tryambak (also spelt Trayambak). In ch. 18 all three print neenahun, an evident misprint for teenahun, “all three”, since the verse follows the three colours of ch. 17; we print teenahun. Some names in ch. 21–28 (Sunand, Saychandra, Treshlesh, Krityaau) are worn forms of Bhairava names whose original is uncertain; they are kept as printed and given as names. Ailadi in ch. 34 is a devotee named in the text and otherwise unknown. Small spelling differences are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
