What the Hanuman Chalisa is

Hanuman is the great devotee of Lord Rama in the Ramayana: the son of Anjana and of Vayu, the Wind, strong enough to leap across the ocean to Lanka, yet humble, wise and wholly devoted. He is loved as Sankat Mochan, the one who frees people from trouble, and as a picture of strength used in service.

Chalisa means a hymn of forty (chalis) verses. The Hanuman Chalisa has forty chaupais (four-part verses, written here as two lines each), with two dohas (couplets) at the start and one at the end. It was written in Awadhi, an old form of Hindi, by the poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas (16th century), who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas.

A well-loved tradition says Tulsidas composed it while held captive by the Mughal emperor, and that he was freed after reciting it. Historians cannot confirm the story, but it is told with affection, and it shows what the Chalisa has meant to people for centuries: a short, simple prayer that anyone can say, in any language of the heart.

Many families recite it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Text and sources

The Hanuman Chalisa is a public-domain Awadhi text by Goswami Tulsidas. Every verse here was compared line by line across three independent transcriptions: sanskritdocuments.org (the Awadhi lines given with its Sanskrit rendering of the Chalisa), shlokam.org, and Bhakti Bharat. Where they differ we follow the most common recitation, which is also the reading of the widely printed Gita Press edition. The transliterations and meanings are our own.

Chaupai 25: we give “nasai rog harai sab peera, japat nirantar Hanumat beera” (shlokam.org, Bhakti Bharat). sanskritdocuments.org repeats here the second line of chaupai 36, “jo sumirai Hanumat balbeera”, a form also heard in some recitations.

Chaupai 6: “sankar suvan Kesari-nandan” (son of Shiva) in all three; Bhakti Bharat notes the other popular reading “Shankar swayam” (Shiva himself), since many devotees regard Hanuman as an avatar of Shiva.

Chaupai 3: “kumati nivar sumati ke sangi” is the same in all three sources.

Smaller variants: doha 2 “bal budhi bidya … kales bikar” (shlokam.org, Bhakti Bharat) against “bal buddhi vidya … klesh vikar” (sanskritdocuments.org); chaupai 5 “au” or “aru” (and); chaupai 12 “Bharatahi sam” or “Bharat sam”; chaupai 15 “kahi sake” or “kahi sakahi”; chaupai 37 “jai jai jai” (three times; Bhakti Bharat as “jai jai jai”) or “jai jai” (sanskritdocuments.org); chaupai 40 “hriday mahan” or “hriday mah”. In each case we follow the majority reading shown above. Spellings such as तुम्हरो/तुह्मरो and संकर/सङ्कर differ only in how they are written, not in sound. The closing doha is the same in all three.
