Listen: Gayatri Chalisa

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

Fast recitation, full text (3 min)

The complete text recited quickly, as many people chant it every day; nothing is left out.

Who Gayatri Mata is, and what the chalisa is

Gayatri is first of all a mantra: the verse of the Rigveda (3.62.10) to Savitr, the divine light of the Sun, prayed to for a clear and awakened mind. Its metre, also called gayatri, has three lines of eight syllables, twenty-four in all. In later tradition the mantra came to be worshipped as a goddess, Gayatri Mata, the Vedamata or mother of the Vedas. She is pictured with five faces and ten arms, or as a gentle goddess in white seated on a swan, holding a book, a flower, a water pot and a rosary, and she is seen as one with Savitri, Saraswati and the great Mother.

A chalisa is a hymn of about forty verses (chalis means forty) in simple Hindi. The Gayatri Chalisa opens with two dohas, has forty chaupais (couplets) and closes with one doha. It begins with the seed syllables hreem shreem kleem, praises the twenty-four syllables of the mantra, describes the goddess on her swan, sees her in Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali, and then speaks of the hopes of every kind of devotee, from sages and yogis to householders, the sick and the anxious.

No poet is named in the text or in any edition we found. Its language is modern Hindi, with words such as kranti (change), jagriti (awakening) and pragati (progress), so it is most likely a 20th-century composition, probably from the movement that spread Gayatri worship to every household in that century; we could not confirm who wrote it. It has been printed without an author in chalisa collections since at least 2000. The hopes it voices are words of devotion, not promises.

Questions

Who wrote the Gayatri Chalisa?

No poet is named. The modern Hindi of the hymn suggests it was written in the 20th century, but none of the editions we checked gives an author.

How is the chalisa related to the Gayatri mantra?

The Gayatri mantra is a Sanskrit verse of the Rigveda; the chalisa is a Hindi hymn in praise of the goddess who personifies that mantra. Its first chaupai names the mantra's opening words, Om bhur bhuvah svah, and the second its twenty-four syllables. See the Gayatri mantra page for the mantra itself.

What are “hreem shreem kleem” at the start?

They are bija (seed) syllables of the goddess tradition, traditionally linked with the great Mother, with Lakshmi and with attraction or love. The chalisa opens with them before praising the goddess's qualities in words.

What does “Tripada” mean?

“The three-footed one”: the Gayatri metre has three lines (pada), so the goddess of the mantra is called Tripada.

Text and sources

The text was compared line by line across three independent editions: the printed 51 Chalisa Sangrah (Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, 2004; its 2000 edition reads the same), Bhakti Bharat (bhaktibharat.com) and Sanskrit Documents (sanskritdocuments.org, gayatrii40, proofread 2005). Bharat Discovery (bharatdiscovery.org) reproduces the Sanskrit Documents text, misprints included, so it was not counted as independent. All agree on the two dohas, the forty chaupais and the closing doha. None names an author.

Variants (we follow the reading of two sources against one): doha 1 shaanti kraanti jaagriti (Sanskrit Documents: shaanti kaanti jaagrit); ch. 1 Om (misread as “3” in the scanned print); ch. 2 inmen basen (print: ismen base); ch. 4 sitambar, “white-clad” (print: shvetaambar, same meaning); ch. 6 hiy (Sanskrit Documents: hit); ch. 12 kou (Sanskrit Documents: koi); ch. 20 hvai jaai (Bhakti Bharat and Sanskrit Documents: hai jaai); ch. 24 tum san tare (print: mam san taram, a scanning error); ch. 26 hvai jaavain (also ho, hai); ch. 27 daarid (Sanskrit Documents: daridra); ch. 31 jo … chit laai (Sanskrit Documents: je … chit thaai); ch. 33 aur (Sanskrit Documents: thor, a misprint); ch. 40 jo (Sanskrit Documents: je). Small spelling differences (chaubis/chaubees, buddhi/budhi, klesh/kales) are not listed. The transliteration and both meanings are our own.
