What the Durga Chalisa is

Durga is the Divine Mother in her protecting form: the goddess who rides a lion, holds many weapons and overcomes what harms her children. In the old stories she defeats the proud buffalo-demon Mahishasura and the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. She is also known as Amba, Bhavani, Jagadamba and Gauri, and her gentler and fiercer forms (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kali and others) are all seen as one Mother.

A chalisa is a hymn of forty verses. The Durga Chalisa is written in simple old Hindi, in short rhyming couplets called chaupais. It praises the Mother's many forms, retells her victories, and ends with a personal prayer for help, strength and her kindness. Many editions close with a short doha asking her to take the devotee into her lap.

Who wrote it is not known for certain. The last chaupai names Devidas, and tradition takes him as the poet, but nothing reliable is known about his life or date. It is an old traditional text, sung in homes and temples across North India for generations, and it belongs to everyone.

Many families recite it in Navratri and on Fridays, and keeping a regular day can help continuity; but recite it whenever your heart calls.

Durga Chalisa with meaning

Each chaupai is given in Hindi, in English letters, and with a simple meaning. The forty chaupais are followed by the closing chaupai with the poet's name and the closing doha found in many editions.

Questions

Who wrote the Durga Chalisa?

It is not known for certain. The closing chaupai names Devidas and tradition takes him as the poet, but nothing reliable is known about his life or date. It is an old traditional hymn that belongs to everyone.

Can I recite it if I do not read Hindi?

Yes. Read it in English letters from this page, or listen to the audio and repeat. Saying it with feeling matters more than perfect pronunciation.

Can women recite the Durga Chalisa, including during periods?

Anyone can recite it: women, men, children and elders. Family customs about the days of the period differ; many people simply recite it from memory or listen quietly on those days. Follow what feels right in your home.

Is the Durga Chalisa connected with Rahu?

In Jyotish, Durga is traditionally associated with Rahu, so the two are often mentioned together. The chalisa itself is a hymn of devotion to the Mother, not a remedy or a guarantee of any result.

Text and sources

The Durga Chalisa is a traditional Hindi hymn in the public domain. Every line was compared across four independent transcriptions (sanskritdocuments.org, bharatdiscovery.org, bhaktibharat.com and shubhpanchang.com). Where they differ we follow the reading most of them share, which is also the most common recitation. The transliterations and meanings on this page are our own.

Main variants: chaupai 1, a few editions repeat ‘durge’ in the second half instead of ‘ambe’; chaupai 2, ‘nirakar’ for ‘nirankar’; chaupai 8, ‘tumhen’ for ‘tumhare’; chaupai 10, ‘dhara’ for ‘dharyo’ and ‘pragat’ for ‘pargat’; chaupai 11, ‘hiranyaksh’ for ‘hiranakush’; chaupai 15, some add ‘aru’ (‘Matangi aru Dhumavati’), which makes the line too long; chaupai 20, ‘nagarkot’ or ‘nag koti’ for ‘nagar koti’; chaupai 23, ‘kali ko’ for ‘kalika’; chaupai 25, ‘auron sab loka’ for ‘aru basav loka’; chaupai 26, ‘tahi mein’ for ‘jwala mein’; chaupai 36, some editions read ‘ripu murakh mohi ati darpave’ in the second half; chaupai 40, editions vary between ‘jo koi gavai’, ‘jo jan gave’ and ‘jo nit gavai’, all with the same meaning.

The closing doha (‘Sharnagat raksha kare…’) appears in about half of the editions we checked and is widely sung, so we include it; some editions end with the Devidas chaupai.
