Shiv Tandav Stotram: lyrics with meaning

The thundering hymn traditionally credited to Ravana, the great devotee of Shiva: fifteen verses that sound like the drum of the dance itself, with two closing verses on the fruit of reciting it.

Listen: Shiv Tandav Stotram

A calm computer-voiced recitation over soft music, checked line by line against the text. It is an aid to reading along, not a replacement for a priest or a family elder.

What the Shiv Tandav Stotram is

Tandava is Shiva's cosmic dance, the rhythm by which the world is made and unmade. Tradition says Ravana, king of Lanka and a great devotee of Shiva, sang this hymn after trying to lift Mount Kailash: pinned under the mountain by Shiva's toe, he praised him until Shiva was pleased. Its long compound words and pounding metre (panchachamara) are meant to be heard: “damad damad”, “dhagad dhagad”, “dhimid dhimid” echo the drum, the fire and the mridanga of the dance.

Behind the thunder, the hymn moves inward. By verse 12 the singer asks for a mind that sees a stone and a soft bed, a snake and a pearl necklace, a friend and an enemy, as the same; verse 13 longs for a quiet life by the Ganga, chanting “Shiva”. Read the meanings once and the sound will carry more.

How to recite it

At a steady pace it takes about eight to ten minutes.

  1. Sit before a Shivling or picture of Shiva after bathing; offer water and a bel leaf if you can.
  2. The closing verse recommends the evening hour of pradosh, at the end of a puja; Mondays and Mahashivratri are also favoured.
  3. The compounds are long: break them where the English letters show hyphens, and keep the rhythm even rather than fast. Listening to the audio a few times helps.
  4. End with “Om Namah Shivaya” or the Shiv aarti.

Questions

Who wrote the Shiv Tandav Stotram?

Tradition credits Ravana, and the last verse itself calls it “the song of the ten-headed one”. Like most stotras it cannot be dated with certainty; it is an old, public-domain hymn.

When is it best to recite it?

The text recommends pradosh, the evening twilight, at the end of a puja. Mondays, the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the usual days.

Why do some versions have fewer verses?

Older printed collections such as the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara give thirteen verses of praise and leave out the two we number 14 and 15, which most people sing today. Both versions are traditional.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We follow the corrected text on Sanskrit Wikisource (“atha susamshuddham”), checked verse by verse against the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara (1953) as transcribed on Wikisource; in verse 13 we take the Ratnakara ending “-lagnakah”, where the Wikisource text has “-lagnakam”. Variants in the Ratnakara: “kvachich chidambare” (verse 3), “madandha-sindhura-sphurat” (verse 4), “maha-kapali-sampade shiro jatalam” (verse 6), “matir mama” (verse 7), “samam pravartayan manah kada sadashivam bhaje” (verse 12) and “lakshmim sadaiva sumukhim” (verse 17); it leaves out verses 14 and 15. The transliteration and meanings are our own.
