Sri Rudram: Namakam and Chamakam with meaning

The great Vedic hymn to Shiva in two halves: the Namakam, which bows to Rudra in every form, and the Chamakam, which asks, item by item, “may this be mine”. Eleven anuvakas each, with a plain meaning for every part.

What Sri Rudram is

Sri Rudram, also called the Rudra Prashna or Shatarudriya (“the hundred Rudras”), is one of the oldest and best-loved hymns to Shiva. It comes from the Krishna (Black) Yajurveda: the Namakam is chapter 4.5 of the Taittiriya Samhita and the Chamakam is chapter 4.7. Each has eleven sections called anuvakas. In the ancient fire-altar ritual these mantras accompanied offerings made to calm Rudra and a long stream of ghee poured into the fire; today they are chanted in temples and homes, above all in South India, whenever Shiva is worshipped with full Vedic rites.

The Namakam takes its name from the word namo, “salutation”, which it repeats hundreds of times. It begins by asking Rudra, the fierce archer, to put down his bow and show his kind, healing face, and then bows to him in everything: in trees and rivers, in kings and charioteers, in potters and hunters, in the rain and the dust, even in thieves. The message is that there is nothing in which the Lord is absent. The eighth anuvaka contains “namah shivaya”, the source of the five-syllable mantra. The Chamakam answers with cha me, “and may this be mine”: a long, plain list of everything a whole life needs, from breath, health and food to grains, metals, the rites of the Veda and even numbers, asking that all of it be complete and offered back.

In North India many families follow the Shukla (White) Yajurveda, whose own Rudra chapter (chapter 16 of the Vajasaneyi Samhita) is recited as part of the Rudrashtadhyayi. It shares many lines with the Namakam, such as the opening “namas te rudra manyave”, but its wording and order differ. This page gives the Taittiriya (Krishna Yajurveda) text, the one usually meant by “Sri Rudram”.

When it is chanted, and how long it takes

Sri Rudram is chanted during Shiva puja and above all during Rudrabhishekam, when water, milk or other offerings are poured slowly over the Shivling while the priests chant. Mondays, the evening of Pradosh, the month of Shravan and Mahashivratri are the most common occasions, along with temple festivals and house ceremonies.

For bigger ceremonies the chant is multiplied. In Ekadasha Rudra (Rudra Ekadashini) the Namakam is chanted eleven times, and after each round one anuvaka of the Chamakam follows in order, so that the whole Chamakam is completed once. Eleven Ekadashinis make a Laghu Rudra, eleven Laghu Rudras a Maha Rudra, and eleven Maha Rudras an Ati Rudra; these larger forms are shared among many priests chanting together, often over several days.

At a trained chanter's steady pace the Namakam takes about 25 to 30 minutes and the Chamakam about 15, so the two together take roughly 40 to 45 minutes. Reading slowly for the first time, with the meanings, takes longer, and that is perfectly fine.

How to read and recite it

Vedic chanting is traditionally learned from a teacher, together with its accents (svaras). If you have not learned it that way, you can still read the text with its meaning, join others when they chant, and keep “Om Namah Shivaya” in your heart.

  1. Bathe, sit before a Shivling or a picture of Shiva, and offer water and a bel leaf if you can. During an abhishekam the water or milk is poured slowly while the Namakam is chanted.
  2. Many chanters begin with the Ganapati mantra “Om gananam tva” and, after the Namakam, add closing mantras such as the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra. The Chamakam follows, and the whole ends with “Om shantih shantih shantih”.
  3. In anuvakas 2 to 4 each salutation is printed on its own line ending in “namah”. When they are chanted without a break, that “namah” joins the next “namo”, so you will hear “pataye namo namo…”.
  4. Go slowly and keep an even rhythm. Taittiriya chanters pronounce some sounds in their own way (for example the nasal in “himsih” is said close to “higmsih”); a teacher will show you these details.

Namakam 11.7

te yam dvishmo yash cha no dveshti tam vo jambhe dadhami.

Meaning: Salutation to the Rudras on the earth, in the sky and in heaven, whose arrows are food, wind and rain. To them, ten fingers joined towards the east, ten to the south, ten to the west, ten to the north, ten upwards: to them, salutation. May they be gracious to us. The one we dislike and the one who dislikes us, we place in your jaws. Many teachers read this as handing the ill-will itself over to Shiva.

Questions

What is the difference between the Namakam and the Chamakam?

The Namakam (Taittiriya Samhita 4.5) bows to Rudra again and again with “namah”, seeing him in every form. The Chamakam (4.7) repeats “cha me”, “and may this be mine”, asking for everything a full life needs. They are chanted together, Namakam first.

Do I need to know the Vedic accents to recite it?

Traditionally the Rudram is learned from a teacher, with its accents, and chanted that way in rituals. The text here is given without accent marks so that it is easy to read and understand. Reading it slowly with the meaning, joining a group chant, or simply repeating “Om Namah Shivaya” are all common ways for beginners to take part.

What are Ekadasha Rudra, Laghu Rudra and Maha Rudra?

They are larger forms of the chant. In Ekadasha Rudra the Namakam is chanted eleven times, each time followed by one anuvaka of the Chamakam. Eleven of these make a Laghu Rudra, and eleven Laghu Rudras a Maha Rudra, usually chanted by a group of priests.

How is Sri Rudram different from the Rudrashtadhyayi?

Both praise Rudra, but they come from two branches of the Yajurveda. Sri Rudram is the Krishna Yajurveda (Taittiriya) text, common in South India. The Rudrashtadhyayi, common in North India, follows the Shukla Yajurveda, and its Rudra chapter has its own wording and order, though many lines are shared.

Why does a prayer to Shiva speak of weapons and even thieves?

The Rudram begins with Rudra's fierce side and asks him, again and again, to put his weapons down and be kind. Saluting him in thieves, hunters and the night is its way of saying that nothing, pleasant or frightening, lies outside the one Lord. The tone of the whole hymn is a plea for peace and protection.

Text and sources

The Sanskrit text is public domain. We checked every anuvaka by program, after evening out spacing and sandhi, against two independent sources: the unaccented Taittiriya Samhita 4.5 and 4.7 on Sanskrit Wikisource, and the recited Rudra Prashna on sanskritdocuments.org, in two separately prepared files (the accented Rudraprashna and Chamakaprashna by Rajagopal Iyer and Rekha Venkatesh, and the unaccented text by P. P. Narayanaswami). The Vedic accent (svara) marks are left out here; Vedic chanting is traditionally learned from a teacher together with the accents, and this page is meant for reading and understanding.

We write the words joined as they are recited, where Wikisource prints the Samhita word by word, and use the ordinary anusvara (ं) for the Taittiriya sign ꣳ. Where the sources differ we follow the Samhita: “trimhatibhyah”, “samvridhvane”, “idhriyaya”, “hradayyaya”, “akkhidate, prakkhidate”, “satvanah”, and “ma no vadhih” and “bhamito vadhih” in anuvaka 10 (the recitation files have “samvriddhvane”, “ighriyaya”, “hridayyaya”, “akhkhidate”, “sattvanah” or “ma no 'vadhih” in places). In the Chamakam we follow the Samhita in “श्यामाकाः” (anuvaka 4) and “शक्वरीः” (anuvaka 9), where the recitation files read “श्यामकाः” and “शक्क्वरीः”; in anuvaka 7 we keep the recited “mahendrash cha” with a long a (माहेन्द्र), as in both recitation files, where the Wikisource Samhita has “महेन्द्र”. The numbers of the eleventh Chamakam anuvaka (odd numbers 1 to 33, then 4 to 48 in fours) agree in all sources.

We leave out the line “Namas te astu bhagavan vishveshvaraya…”, which many traditions chant after the first anuvaka but which is not part of the Samhita, and also the preliminary Laghunyasa, the meditation verses (dhyana), the opening Ganapati mantra, the closing mantras chanted after the Namakam and the closing “ida devahuh” of the Chamakam, which vary between traditions. The transliteration and meanings are our own; where a word is explained differently by different teachers, we follow the common traditional reading and say so.
