In short: Aquarius is the fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn and, in modern Western astrology, by Uranus. It is the energy of the group and the principle: friendship, ideals, independence, reform, science and the future. Aquarius people tend to be original, humane and a little detached, and to care deeply about fairness for everyone — sometimes more easily than for anyone in particular.

The water-bearer in myth and sky
Aquarius is pictured as a figure pouring water from a jar, a stream that flows down to the Southern Fish and its bright star Fomalhaut. In Babylon this was the "Great One", a god pouring the waters of abundance, and the region of sky around it was associated with the rains. The Greeks identified the water-bearer with Ganymede, the most beautiful of mortals, a Trojan prince whom the gods — in later tellings, Zeus in the form of an eagle — carried up to Olympus to be cupbearer of the gods (Homer, Iliad 20). The constellation Aquila, the eagle, flies nearby.
In Sanskrit the sign is Kumbha, the pot. Varahamihira pictures it as a man carrying a pot on his shoulder, and records the Greek-derived name Hridroga, from Hydrochoos, "water-pourer". The word kumbha also names the Kumbh Mela, whose story is the pot of amrita from the churning of the ocean; the Haridwar Kumbh is held when Jupiter is in Kumbha.
The nakshatra Shatabhisha, "a hundred physicians" (or "a hundred stars"), lies in this part of the sky; its deity is Varuna, lord of the waters. The first half of Purva Bhadrapada follows, marked by two stars of the great square of Pegasus.
Two zodiacs, one sign
In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Aquarius from about 20 January to 18 February. In the sidereal zodiac the Sun is in Kumbha from about 13 February to 14 March. Many Western Aquarians are Vedic Capricorn, and many Vedic Aquarians are Western Pisces.
The Age of Aquarius
Precession slowly moves the March equinox backwards against the stars, about one degree every 72 years. For roughly the past two thousand years the equinox has been among the stars of Pisces, and at some point it will move into Aquarius — the "Age of Aquarius". There is no agreed date. Estimates range over many centuries, because the constellations have unequal, fuzzy boundaries and astrologers measure the ages differently. The idea is a modern Western one, built on real astronomy but with no single answer.
What Aquarius means
In Vedic astrology
BPHS ch. 4 and Brihat Jataka ch. 1 describe Aquarius as an airy, fixed, masculine sign, rising head first, strong by day, with its direction in the west. It is the calves of the cosmic person and the natural 11th house: gains, income, friends, elder siblings, networks and the fulfilment of wishes.
Saturn rules Aquarius and has its moolatrikona in the first 20°, so Saturn is usually considered more comfortable here than in Capricorn — the principled, humanitarian side of Saturn. No planet is exalted or debilitated here. One school gives Rahu co-rulership of Aquarius; others give Rahu Virgo.
In Western astrology
In the traditional scheme Aquarius is Saturn's diurnal domicile. The Sun is in detriment here, opposite its own sign Leo — the group against the individual. Since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries most Western astrologers make Uranus the modern ruler of Aquarius, keeping Saturn as traditional co-ruler; some propose Neptune's exaltation here. In the Hellenistic scheme the air signs are ruled by Saturn by day and Mercury by night, with Jupiter participating.
Modern Western astrology reads Aquarius as the archetype of the free individual within the community: the friend, the reformer, the scientist, the visionary.
Strengths
Aquarius gives originality, independence, fairness, intelligence and a genuine concern for humanity. It thinks for itself, sees patterns and systems, and works well in teams toward a shared ideal. It is a loyal friend, tolerant of difference, and often ahead of its time.
Challenges
The shadow of detachment is distance. Aquarius may find it easier to care for causes than for the person in front of it, intellectualise feelings, or hold to its principles so firmly that it becomes contrary. It can feel like an outsider. Its growth often comes through warmth — the lesson of its opposite sign, Leo — and letting the heart in alongside the mind.
In relationships
Aquarius loves through friendship. It wants a partner who is also a friend and an equal, who respects its independence and shares its interests and ideals. It may be slow to show feeling but is deeply loyal once committed. Its opposite sign, Leo (the 7th from Aquarius), describes the partnership lesson: warmth, play, generosity and personal devotion.
In career and work
Aquarius suits work with systems, ideas and communities: science and technology, engineering, research, social work and reform, non-profit work, politics and activism, astrology, networks and any field that serves the public or the future. It works best where it has independence and a cause.
Health as wellbeing
Aquarius is the calves and shins of the Vedic cosmic person and the ankles and circulation in Western astrology. As wellbeing, it benefits from movement, fresh air, time with friends, and attention to the body when the mind is busy elsewhere. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
How Aquarius changes
- As Sun sign: the Sun is in detriment, so the core identity is shaped by ideals and groups more than by personal display.
- As Moon sign: the emotional nature is calm, independent and friendly; the person feels safe when they have space and like-minded company.
- As ascendant: the person tends to be friendly, unusual and a little reserved. Saturn is lagna lord (also ruling the 12th). Venus, ruling the 4th and 9th, is the yogakaraka — the most beneficial planet for Aquarius rising.
- By nakshatra. Dhanishta's second half (0°–6°40′) gives rhythm, music and ambition; Shatabhisha (6°40′–20°) gives healing, research and a love of solitude; Purva Bhadrapada's first three padas (20°–30°) give intensity and idealism.
- By planets in it. Saturn here is principled and fair; the Sun here serves the group; the Moon here is calm and detached; Mercury here is inventive.
Aquarius in every chart
Everyone has Aquarius somewhere in the chart. The house it occupies is where you are independent, idealistic and community-minded. Aquarius on the 10th points to a career in science, technology or public service; on the 11th, a wide network of friends; on the 5th, unconventional creativity.
Following the ruler
Saturn, ruler of Aquarius (with Uranus for modern Western astrologers), is the planet to follow. Wherever Saturn sits by sign and house shows where Aquarian ideals are put to work: Saturn in the 11th brings them into networks and gains, in the 10th into public service, in the 6th into daily work for others. A strong Saturn makes every Aquarius placement more effective; a strained Saturn asks them to stay connected rather than retreat.
Sign aspects (Jaimini)
In the Jaimini system (rashi drishti, Jaimini Sutras ch. 1), fixed signs aspect the movable signs except the movable sign next to them. So Aquarius aspects Aries, Cancer and Libra, but not Capricorn.
Vedic and Western views compared
Both traditions read Aquarius as an airy sign of principle and community, ruled by Saturn. Western astrology adds Uranus as modern ruler, which shifts the emphasis toward revolution and invention; Vedic astrology keeps Saturn alone (with Rahu as a disputed co-ruler) and emphasises gains, friends and service. The zodiacs differ by about 24°.
