In short: Anuradha is the seventeenth nakshatra, spanning 3°20′ to 16°40′ of sidereal Scorpio. Its deity is Mitra, the god of friendship and agreements, and its ruling planet is Saturn. Its name means "following Radha" — the nakshatra that comes after Vishakha, once called Radha, "success". Its symbol is a lotus, the flower that rises clean out of muddy water. Anuradha is the energy of loyal friendship and devotion that holds through difficulty. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be faithful, disciplined, cooperative and quietly resilient.

The story: Mitra, the friend
Mitra's name simply means "friend", and also "contract" or "alliance". He is one of the Adityas, usually paired with Varuna: Varuna watches over cosmic law and punishes its breach, while Mitra binds people together in agreement and goodwill. Rigveda 3.59, the one hymn addressed to Mitra alone, praises him as the god who "brings people together", who watches the farmers without blinking, and under whose protection a person "is never slain or conquered". In Persia the same god, Mithra, became one of the great guardians of truth and oaths.
There are few dramatic stories about Mitra, and that is itself telling. Friendship does not need battles. It needs keeping. Anuradha's place in the zodiac sharpens the point: it lies in Scorpio, the sign of crisis and depth, and it is ruled by Saturn, the planet of hardship and time. Anuradha's friendship is the kind that survives hard places — the lotus in the mud.
In the sky
Anuradha's stars are β, δ and π Scorpii, the short arc at the Scorpion's head, just west of red Antares. In Arabic astronomy the same stars were the seventeenth lunar mansion, al-Iklil, "the crown". The Atharvaveda's list of nakshatras (19.7) already places Anuradha after Radha.
The nature of Anuradha
Muhurta texts class Anuradha as mridu, soft — suited to friendships, marriage, arts and pleasant undertakings. Its temperament is deva, divine. Saturn rules it, giving discipline, patience and endurance, and it lies in Mars's sign Scorpio, which gives intensity, courage and depth.
Anuradha's core qualities are loyalty, devotion, cooperation, organisational skill, perseverance and a talent for working with groups. It is often spiritual or devotional, and it is good at building alliances between people who would not otherwise meet. Many Anuradha people travel or live far from home and make friends wherever they go.
Anuradha's position is worth pausing on. It is a gentle, devotional nakshatra placed in the most intense sign of the zodiac and ruled by its sternest planet. The tradition reads this not as a contradiction but as a lesson: friendship and devotion matter most where life is hardest. Anuradha people are often the ones who stay when others leave.
Strengths
- Loyal friendship. Anuradha is faithful through good times and bad.
- Discipline. Saturn gives it staying power and organisation.
- Cooperation. Mitra's gift is bringing people together.
- Resilience. Like the lotus, it flourishes in difficult conditions.
Challenges
- Hidden emotion. Scorpio and Saturn can make it reserved or brooding.
- Rigidity in loyalty. It may stay in relationships or groups out of duty after they have stopped serving anyone.
- Melancholy. Saturn can bring periods of loneliness or heaviness.
Anuradha's growth often lies in letting its friendships be mutual — receiving the loyalty it gives.
The Moon in Anuradha
The Moon is in its debilitation sign, Scorpio, though its deepest debility point (3° Scorpio) lies in Vishakha. In Anuradha the Moon's sensitivity is steadied by Saturn's discipline: the emotional nature is deep, loyal and devoted, sometimes reserved, and often unexpectedly strong in a crisis. These people may have known early difficulty and learned resilience from it.
The ascendant and other planets in Anuradha
An Anuradha ascendant tends to give a calm, serious face and a friendly, dependable manner. Saturn in its own nakshatra here is disciplined and devoted, though in Mars's sign. Mars here, in its own sign, combines drive with endurance. Jupiter here gives a devotional, steady wisdom. The Sun transits Anuradha from roughly the third week of November to early December.

- Pada 4 (Scorpio navamsa). Intense and private — vargottama — deep devotion, research and spiritual practice.
Reading Anuradha in a chart
When a planet or the Moon sits in Anuradha, look first at Saturn, the nakshatra lord: its sign and house show where the nakshatra's discipline and loyalty are tested and rewarded. Then look at Mars, the sign lord, which shows how much courage and drive are available. Finally, the house: Anuradha in the 11th often describes wide, loyal networks; in the 7th, a devoted partnership that deepens over time; in the 10th, success through organisation and teamwork; in the 12th, devotion, foreign residence or spiritual retreat. A planet here often gives some of its results in Saturn's sub-periods.
In relationships and matching
Anuradha is a deva gana nakshatra, with the deer as its yoni and Madhya (Pitta) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Jyeshtha, the other deer nakshatra; the dog nakshatras (Ardra and Mula) are the deer's traditional enemy.
In everyday terms, Anuradha partners are loyal, devoted and committed for the long term. They need trust and emotional depth, and a partner who is also a true friend.
Career and work
Anuradha favours work that involves organising and cooperating: management, administration, diplomacy and international work, social organisations, research, mining and work with the earth, spiritual and religious organisations, and any role where steady teamwork matters.
Health as wellbeing
Anuradha lies in Scorpio, linked with the reproductive and eliminative systems, and Saturn links it with endurance and the bones. As wellbeing, it benefits from regular routines, emotional expression with trusted friends, and enough warmth and rest. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
The dasha connection
A person born with the Moon in Anuradha begins life in the Saturn mahadasha, nineteen years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. Mercury's seventeen-year dasha follows, then Ketu's seven (BPHS ch. 46).
Muhurta: choosing a time
As a mridu (soft) nakshatra, Anuradha is traditionally favoured for friendship, marriage, the arts and other gentle beginnings. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.
Traditional practice
For Anuradha the tradition honours Mitra through friendship itself — keeping one's word, reconciling quarrels, standing by friends. Worship of the Sun as Mitra (the first of the twelve names in the Surya Namaskara sequence is Om Mitraya namah) is a natural observance. For Saturn, the nakshatra lord, service to elders and the poor is recommended. These are traditional practices, not promises.
Living with Anuradha
Anuradha people often have a few friendships that last their whole lives, and those friendships carry them. The work of this nakshatra is to keep loyalty alive rather than merely dutiful — renewing friendships, letting go of alliances that have become empty, and remembering that Mitra's protection extends to oneself. The lotus does not resent the mud; it simply grows.
A note for Western readers
Western astrology does not use the nakshatras. Anuradha's stars lie in early tropical Sagittarius (around 1°–3°); Western fixed-star lore associated the Scorpion's head with a sharp, sometimes dangerous energy.
