In short: Bharani is the second nakshatra, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′ of sidereal Aries. Its deity is Yama, the lord of death and of dharma, and its ruling planet is Venus. Its name means "she who bears", and its symbol is the womb. Bharani is the energy of carrying: holding life, desire, responsibility and change until it is ready to be born. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be intense, honest, creative and able to carry a great deal.

The story: Yama, the first to die
Yama is not a villain. In the Rigveda he is the son of Vivasvat (the Sun) and the first mortal who died; having gone ahead, he found the path to the world of the ancestors and prepared it for everyone who would follow (Rigveda 10.14). He is a king, not a monster, and the dead go to him to rest.
His most famous story is in the Katha Upanishad. The boy Nachiketa, given away to Death by his father in a fit of anger, goes to Yama's house and waits three nights at the door without food, because Yama is away. To make amends, Yama grants him three boons. Nachiketa asks first for his father's peace of mind, then for knowledge of a sacred fire; for the third he asks what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him, offering wealth, long life, kingdoms, pleasures. Nachiketa refuses them all, and Yama, impressed, teaches him the nature of the self that does not die.
So Bharani's deity is a teacher as much as a judge. Yama is also Dharmaraja, the king of righteousness, and the Mahabharata makes him the father of Yudhishthira, the most truthful of the Pandavas. Bharani carries this double meaning: it bears life and it bears the knowledge of endings, and it holds both with seriousness.
In the sky
Bharani's stars are a small, faint triangle in Aries — 35, 39 and 41 Arietis — which tradition reads as the shape of the yoni. It is one of the least conspicuous nakshatras in the sky and one of the weightiest in meaning. In Arabic astronomy the same triangle was the second lunar mansion, al-Butain, "the little belly" — another image of carrying.
The nature of Bharani
Muhurta texts class Bharani as ugra, fierce: suited to decisive, forceful or difficult actions, and traditionally avoided for gentle beginnings such as marriage. Its temperament (gana) is manushya, human. Its ruling planet, Venus, gives it desire, creativity, sensuality and a love of beauty; its sign lord, Mars, gives it courage and drive.
The combination is powerful. Bharani wants intensely and commits fully. It understands that creation involves effort and that every birth is also an ending of what came before. It is honest about the body, about desire and about death — subjects many people avoid.
Strengths
- Endurance. Bharani can carry heavy loads — work, family, responsibility — for a long time.
- Creativity. Venus and the symbol of the womb make it fertile in ideas, art and projects.
- Honesty. It tends to say what it means and to face hard truths.
- Moral seriousness. Under Yama, it has a strong sense of right and wrong and often stands for fairness.
Challenges
- Intensity. Desire and feeling can run very strong, sometimes to excess.
- Judgement. Its moral clarity can become severity, with itself or others.
- Holding too much. Carrying is its gift and its burden; it can take on more than is healthy and find it hard to let go.
Bharani's growth often lies in knowing when a thing has been carried long enough and can be released — a lesson its deity knows better than anyone.
The Moon in Bharani
With the Moon here, the emotional nature is deep, strong and loyal. These people feel things fully and are not afraid of intensity, and they often become the steady centre of their families. Because the Moon's nakshatra sets the Vimshottari dasha and is used in marriage matching, a Bharani Moon is a key factor in a Vedic reading.
The ascendant and other planets in Bharani
A Bharani ascendant tends to give a strong, sensual presence and a direct gaze. Venus in Bharani is in its own nakshatra but in Mars's sign, so desire and drive are joined — passionate and artistic. Saturn reaches its deepest debilitation at 20° Aries, in the middle of Bharani: discipline is tested here, and patience must be learned. The Sun in Bharani (roughly the last days of April to mid-May) is in its exaltation sign, confident and purposeful.
Pada by pada
| Pada | Span | Sign | Navamsa (D9) | Syllable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 13°20′ Aries – 16°40′ Aries | Aries | Leo | Li |
| 2 | 16°40′ Aries – 20° Aries | Aries | Virgo | Lu |
| 3 | 20° Aries – 23°20′ Aries | Aries | Libra | Le |
| 4 | 23°20′ Aries – 26°40′ Aries | Aries | Scorpio | Lo |
- Pada 1 (Leo navamsa). Proud and creative; Bharani's intensity seeks recognition and expresses itself generously.
- Pada 2 (Virgo navamsa). Practical and service-minded; the capacity to carry is put to careful, useful work.
- Pada 3 (Libra navamsa). Relational and artistic, with Venus strong; desire and beauty come to the fore.
- Pada 4 (Scorpio navamsa). The most intense pada; secretive, deep, transformative, closely tied to Bharani's themes of life and death.
In relationships and matching
Bharani is a manushya gana nakshatra, with the elephant as its yoni and Madhya (Pitta) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Revati, the other elephant nakshatra; the lion nakshatras (Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada) are the elephant's traditional enemy in the yoni koota. Same-nadi pairings are scored low in classical matching, with listed exceptions.
In everyday terms, Bharani partners are loyal, passionate and serious about commitment. They need honesty and depth, and a partner who respects their strength without leaning on it entirely.
Career and work
Bharani favours work that involves carrying responsibility or handling life's thresholds: medicine, especially obstetrics and care at the end of life; law and justice; creative and performing arts; fashion and beauty (Venus); finance and management of resources; and fields that deal with transformation, from recycling to psychology.
Health as wellbeing
Bharani is linked with Venus, with the reproductive system and with the head region (as part of Aries). As wellbeing, it benefits from rest after long efforts, moderation in pleasures, and putting down burdens that are not its to carry. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
The dasha connection
A person born with the Moon in Bharani begins life in the Venus mahadasha, the longest in the Vimshottari system at twenty years. The portion remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through Bharani. Because Venus's period is so long, it often covers childhood, adolescence and early adulthood, and its quality — shaped by Venus's dignity and placement — colours those years. The Sun's six-year dasha follows (BPHS ch. 46).
Muhurta: choosing a time
Because Bharani is ugra, traditional muhurta practice reserves it for decisive actions — things that require force or that end something — and avoids it for marriage, house-warming and similar gentle beginnings. Modern practitioners weigh it with the tithi, weekday and other factors rather than in isolation.
A note for Western readers
Western astrology does not use nakshatras, but Bharani's stars formed the second Arabic lunar mansion, al-Butain. Because Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, sidereal Bharani currently falls entirely within tropical Taurus.
FAQ
Which planet rules Bharani? Venus, in the Vimshottari dasha system. The sign lord is Mars.
What is Bharani's deity? Yama, the lord of death and dharma.
What are the Bharani name syllables? Li, Lu, Le and Lo, one for each pada (spellings vary regionally).
Is Bharani an unlucky nakshatra? No. It is classed as fierce for timing purposes, which makes it suitable for some actions and less so for others. For a birth chart it describes strength, intensity and creativity.
Why is Saturn's debilitation in Bharani important? Saturn's deepest debility point, 20° Aries, lies here. A Saturn in Bharani is read carefully, along with the conditions that cancel debility.
