In short: Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, spanning 6°40′ to 20° of sidereal Gemini. Its deity is Rudra, the roaring storm god, and its ruling planet is Rahu. Its name means "the moist one", and its symbol is a teardrop. Ardra is the energy of the storm: upheaval, intensity, tears and the clearing that comes after — when the air is clean and everything turns green. People with the Moon or ascendant here tend to be intense, intelligent, searching and capable of remarkable renewal.

The story: Rudra, who roars and heals

Rudra is one of the most complex gods of the Rigveda. He is the wild one, the archer of the storm, feared for his arrows — and the hymns ask him again and again to spare people and their cattle. Yet the same hymns call him the healer. Rigveda 2.33 says, "I hear that you are the best physician among physicians," and asks for his healing remedies. Rudra harms and Rudra heals; the storm destroys and the storm brings rain.

The Shatapatha Brahmana (6.1.3) explains his name. When the creator Prajapati produced a boy, the child cried, and when asked why, said he had no name. "Because he cried (rud), he is Rudra." Tears are at the root of Ardra.

Rudra grew into Shiva, the auspicious one, and the long litany of his names, the Shatarudriya in the Taittiriya Samhita (4.5), praises him both as the terrible and as the kindly, the lord of wild places and the friend of the outcast. In South India, the great festival of Arudra Darshanam celebrates Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, on the night the Moon is in Ardra in the month of Margazhi, most famously at Chidambaram.

So Ardra holds two truths together: grief and destruction are real, and they are often the beginning of something cleaner and more alive.

In the sky

Ardra is traditionally identified with Betelgeuse, the great red star at Orion's shoulder, one of the largest stars visible to the naked eye — a red supergiant expected to end its life, some time in the next hundred thousand years or so, as a supernova. (By sidereal longitude Betelgeuse actually falls in Mrigashira's segment; Indian tradition still names it as Ardra's star.)

In parts of eastern India, the Sun's entry into Ardra in late June is linked with the arrival of the monsoon — the "moist" nakshatra bringing the rains.

The nature of Ardra

Muhurta texts class Ardra as tikshna, sharp — suited to cutting away, confronting, ending and difficult tasks, and traditionally avoided for gentle beginnings. Its temperament is manushya, human. Rahu rules it, adding hunger, intensity and a taste for the unconventional, and it lies in Mercury's sign Gemini, which gives it a sharp, analytical mind.

Ardra's core qualities are intensity, intelligence, emotional depth, honesty about pain, and an ability to break through. It often has a research mind that wants to understand how things really work. It is not comfortable with pretence, and it can be stormy until it finds its purpose.

Strengths

  • Penetrating intelligence. Ardra analyses, questions and gets to the bottom of things.
  • Resilience. After a storm it renews itself, often stronger.
  • Empathy for suffering. Having known tears, it understands others' pain.
  • Courage to change. It is willing to break what no longer works.

Challenges

  • Turbulence. Emotions can be stormy and changeable.
  • Harshness. Its honesty can wound, and its frustration can flare.
  • Restlessness. Rahu's hunger may leave it dissatisfied.

A practical sign of a healthy Ardra is that it can name its feelings accurately — grief as grief, anger as anger — rather than letting them blow through everything at once. Rahu's influence also asks for care with obsession: the research that never ends, the argument that must be won.

Ardra's growth often lies in allowing the storm to pass — and in using its sharp mind for healing, as Rudra's hymns ask.

The Moon in Ardra

With the Moon here, the emotional life is intense and sometimes turbulent, with strong reactions and deep feeling. These people often go through emotional storms that transform them, and they can be remarkably compassionate toward others in pain. The mind is quick, curious and analytical, and often drawn to research, technology or psychology.

The ascendant and other planets in Ardra

An Ardra ascendant tends to give an intense gaze and an inquisitive, sometimes restless presence. Rahu in its own nakshatra here is strong and unconventional — often a technical or research gift. Mercury here thinks sharply and critically. The Sun in Ardra (roughly the last week of June to the first week of July) gives intellectual courage. Jupiter here can be a questioning, reforming teacher.

Pada by pada

  • Pada 2 (Capricorn navamsa). Ambitious and practical; intensity becomes discipline and long effort.
  • Pada 3 (Aquarius navamsa). Inventive and humanitarian; the classic Ardra research and technology mind.
  • Pada 4 (Pisces navamsa). Emotional and compassionate; tears become empathy and spiritual depth.

In relationships and matching

Ardra is a manushya gana nakshatra, with the dog as its yoni and Adi (Vata) as its nadi. Its yoni pairs most naturally with Mula, the other dog nakshatra; the deer nakshatras (Anuradha and Jyeshtha) are the dog's traditional enemy.

In everyday terms, Ardra partners are honest, intense and loyal, and they need a partner who can weather storms without leaving, and who appreciates their depth. Their love deepens after difficulties are faced together.

Career and work

Ardra favours fields that need a penetrating mind or that deal with crisis: research and science, technology and software, medicine (especially diagnostics and emergency care), psychology, journalism and investigation, weather and the environment, and any work that transforms broken systems.

Health as wellbeing

Ardra lies in Gemini, traditionally linked with the breath, arms and nervous system, and its storm nature links it with sudden ups and downs. As wellbeing, Ardra benefits from emotional release, calming breath practice and time near rain and green places. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

The dasha connection

A person born with the Moon in Ardra begins life in the Rahu mahadasha, eighteen years long. The balance remaining at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra; a full Rahu period can cover most of childhood and adolescence. Jupiter's sixteen-year dasha follows, then Saturn's nineteen (BPHS ch. 46).

Muhurta: choosing a time

As a tikshna nakshatra, Ardra is traditionally reserved for sharp or severing actions — confronting difficulties, ending things, some forms of treatment — and avoided for marriage and other auspicious beginnings. Tithi, weekday and other factors are weighed together.

Living with Ardra

Ardra people often find that their difficult experiences become their expertise. The storm passes through them and leaves understanding behind. What helps is a channel for the intensity — a research question, a cause, a craft — and people who do not flinch from tears. Rudra's healing hymns are a reminder that the same force that breaks things open can mend them, if it is pointed in the right direction.

A note for Western readers

Western astrology does not use the nakshatras, but it knows Betelgeuse as a fixed star, at about 29° of tropical Gemini, traditionally associated with martial honour and success. The Arabic lunar mansions do not line up with Ardra in a simple way.
