In short: Aries is the first sign of the zodiac in both traditions, a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars and the sign where the Sun is exalted. It is the energy of beginning: courage, initiative, directness and the urge to act. Aries people — whether Aries is their Sun, Moon or rising sign — tend to learn by doing, lead by going first, and need a challenge worth meeting.

The ram in myth and sky
The zodiac's first sign is a ram in every tradition that inherited the Babylonian zodiac. In Greek myth it is the golden ram sent to rescue the children Phrixus and Helle from their stepmother. The ram flew them east over the sea; Helle fell and drowned in the strait that took her name, the Hellespont, but Phrixus reached Colchis, where he sacrificed the ram and hung its golden fleece in a sacred grove (Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 1.9.1). That fleece is what Jason and the Argonauts later sailed to win. Aries begins, then, with a rescue and a quest.
In Sanskrit the sign is Mesha, the ram, and Varahamihira (Brihat Jataka ch. 1) also records its Greek-derived name Kriya, from the Greek Krios — a reminder that the twelve signs came to India through contact with Hellenistic astrology, while the older Indian sky was mapped by the twenty-seven nakshatras. Aries is pictured simply as a ram.
The constellation Aries is small and faint; its brightest star is Hamal. The nakshatra Ashwini, which begins sidereal Aries, takes its stars from the ram's head (β and γ Arietis), and the next, Bharani, from a small triangle of stars in the ram's tail region (the 35, 39 and 41 Arietis group).
Two zodiacs, one sign
In the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology, Aries begins at the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. The Sun is in tropical Aries from about 21 March to 19 April.
In the sidereal zodiac used by Vedic astrology, Aries is measured from the stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs are now about 24° apart, so the Sun enters sidereal Aries — Mesha Sankranti — around 14 April. Mesha Sankranti is New Year in several Indian calendars: Vaisakhi in Punjab, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Vishu in Kerala, Pohela Boishakh in Bengal and Bangladesh, and Bisu in Tulu Nadu, among others.
This means many people who are "Aries" in Western astrology are Pisces in Vedic astrology, and many Vedic Aries are Western Taurus. Both are correct within their system.
What Aries means
In Vedic astrology
BPHS ch. 4 and Brihat Jataka ch. 1 describe Aries as a fiery, movable, masculine sign, rising with its back first and strong at night, with its direction in the east. It is the head of the Kalapurusha, the cosmic person whose body the zodiac maps. As the first sign it is the natural 1st house: the self, the body and the beginning.
Mars rules Aries and has its moolatrikona in the first 12°. The Sun is exalted here, deepest at 10°, so Aries gives solar qualities — courage, authority, clarity of will — their best expression. Saturn, the planet of patience and delay, is debilitated here, deepest at 20°: the slow planet is uncomfortable in the sign of the quick start.
Because Vedic astrology usually reads the Moon sign (rashi) and the ascendant (lagna) more than the Sun sign, "Aries" in a Vedic reading most often means Mesha rashi (Moon in Aries) or Mesha lagna (Aries rising).
In Western astrology
Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos I.12–19) treats Aries as the beginning of the zodiac because the equinox falls there, and assigns it to Mars as domicile and to the Sun as exaltation. In the Hellenistic triplicity scheme (Dorotheus), the fire signs are ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night, with Saturn as participating ruler. Venus is in detriment in Aries (opposite her own sign Libra), and Saturn is in fall.
Modern Western astrology reads Aries as the archetype of the self coming into being: the pioneer, the warrior, the child who wants to do it by themselves.
Strengths
Aries gives courage, honesty and a refreshing directness. It is the sign that volunteers, starts the project, speaks first and stands up for the person being treated unfairly. Aries energy is optimistic about effort: it believes a problem can be solved by meeting it head on, and often it can. It recovers quickly, holds few grudges and brings energy into a room.
Challenges
The same speed can become impatience, impulsiveness or a short fuse. Aries may start more than it finishes, decide before listening, or treat disagreement as a fight. Its learning curve is usually about pacing: letting others catch up, and finding a long-term goal big enough to absorb its energy. Saturn's debility here hints at the lesson — patience is the skill Aries grows into.
In relationships
Aries loves openly and directly. It is attracted to people who are lively, honest and willing to meet it as an equal; it needs a partner who can enjoy its energy without being steamrolled by it. Aries tends to show love through action — doing things for and with someone — more than through words. Its opposite sign, Libra (the 7th from Aries), describes the partnership skills it is learning: cooperation, compromise and grace.
In Vedic matching, a Mesha Moon is compared with the partner's Moon through the Ashtakoota system; Mars's condition in both charts is also examined.
In career and work
Aries suits work that has challenge, movement and autonomy: entrepreneurship, leadership roles, the armed forces and police, emergency services, surgery, sport and coaching, engineering, sales, and any field where someone has to go first. Aries does well with clear goals and short feedback loops, and less well in roles that offer only routine.
Health as wellbeing
Aries is the head of the cosmic person, and astrology traditionally links it with the head, face and the tendency to heat and haste. As wellbeing, Aries benefits from vigorous exercise, enough rest to balance its speed, and care around rushing. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.
How Aries changes
- As Sun sign (Western emphasis): the core identity is direct, self-starting and competitive.
- As Moon sign (Vedic emphasis): the emotional nature is quick to react and quick to recover; the person feels safest when they can act.
- As ascendant: the person looks and moves energetically; Mars, as lagna lord, becomes the key planet of the whole chart, and the Sun (lord of the 5th) and Jupiter (lord of the 9th and 12th) are important supports.
- By nakshatra. Ashwini (0°–13°20′) gives speed and healing; Bharani (13°20′–26°40′) gives intensity and the capacity to carry heavy things; Krittika's first pada (26°40′–30°) adds a sharp, purifying fire.
- By planets in it. The Sun here is strong and confident; Saturn here is tested and learns patience; Mars here is at home and forthright; the Moon here is spirited and restless.
Aries in every chart
Everyone has Aries somewhere. Even if none of your planets is in it, one house of your chart begins in or contains Aries, and that area of life is where you are most likely to act on instinct, start things and need independence. With Aries on the 10th house, for example, career is where you take initiative; on the 4th, home is where you are the one who gets things moving. Planets transiting Aries — especially Mars, and the Sun each spring — tend to activate that part of your life.
Following the ruler
Mars, the ruler of Aries, is the planet to follow. Wherever Mars sits by sign and house shows where Aries energy in your chart is finally spent: Mars in the 10th sends it into career, in the 4th into home and property, in the 7th into partnership. A strong Mars makes every Aries placement in the chart more confident; a strained Mars asks those placements to learn patience.
Sign aspects (Jaimini)
Besides planetary aspects, the Jaimini system gives signs their own aspects (rashi drishti, Jaimini Sutras ch. 1): movable signs aspect the fixed signs, except the fixed sign next to them. So Aries aspects Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, but not Taurus, the fixed sign next to it. Jaimini astrologers use these sign aspects for chara dasha and for judging which houses influence each other, and every planet in Aries shares them.
Vedic and Western views compared
The two traditions agree on Aries's character: fire, initiative, Mars's rulership, the Sun's exaltation and Saturn's fall. They differ on where it is: tropical Aries starts at the equinox; sidereal Aries starts about 24° later, anchored to the stars. They also differ in emphasis, with Western readings leading with the Sun sign and Vedic readings with the Moon sign and ascendant.
FAQ
What are the dates for Aries? Tropical (Western): about 21 March – 19 April. Sidereal (Vedic): about 14 April – 14 May. Exact dates vary by a day from year to year.
Who rules Aries? Mars, in both traditions.
Which planet is exalted in Aries? The Sun, deepest at 10° in Vedic texts (19° in the Western medieval tradition).
Is Aries compatible with Libra? Opposite signs are traditionally complementary — they balance each other — but compatibility depends on the whole chart, not on one sign.
