In short: Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter. It is the energy of the quest: faith, meaning, freedom, travel, learning and the arrow aimed at a far horizon. Sagittarius people tend to be optimistic, frank and adventurous, and to need a purpose bigger than themselves.

The archer in myth and sky

The constellation Sagittarius is usually drawn as a centaur drawing a bow, though many stargazers today know its main stars as "the Teapot". Its mythology is less settled than its shape. Eratosthenes, in the Catasterismi, says the archer is not a centaur at all but Crotus, son of Pan and companion of the Muses, credited with inventing archery, whom the Muses asked Zeus to place among the stars. Later writers drew him as a centaur, and he is often confused with Chiron, the wise centaur — but Chiron, in the classical sources, is the constellation Centaurus.

In Sanskrit the sign is Dhanu, the bow. Varahamihira pictures it as a figure holding a bow, with the hindquarters of a horse, and records the Greek-derived name Taukshika, from Toxotes, the archer.

In the direction of Sagittarius lies the centre of our galaxy, at about 27° of tropical Sagittarius — roughly 3° of sidereal Sagittarius, within the nakshatra Mula, "the root", whose deity is Nirriti, goddess of dissolution. Mula's stars are the curled tail and sting of the Scorpion. The Teapot's stars form Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha, "the early and later invincible ones".

Two zodiacs, one sign

In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Sagittarius from about 22 November to 21 December, ending at the December solstice. In the sidereal zodiac the Sun is in Dhanu from about 16 December to 14 January. This solar month is Dhanurmasa — in Tamil, Margazhi — a month of early-morning devotion when Andal's Tiruppavai is sung in homes and temples. Many Western Sagittarians are Vedic Scorpio, and many Vedic Sagittarians are Western Capricorn.

What Sagittarius means

In Vedic astrology

BPHS ch. 4 and Brihat Jataka ch. 1 describe Sagittarius as a fiery, dual, masculine sign, rising with its back first, strong at night, with its direction in the east. The first half of the sign is human and the second half animal (the horse). It is the thighs of the cosmic person and the natural 9th house: dharma, faith, the teacher, the father, long journeys, higher learning and fortune.

Jupiter rules Sagittarius and has its moolatrikona in the first 10°. No planet of the classical seven is exalted or debilitated here. One school gives Ketu its exaltation in Sagittarius and Rahu its debilitation; another places them in Scorpio and Taurus.

The beginning of Sagittarius, where Jyeshtha ends and Mula begins, is a gandanta junction between water and fire, traditionally treated as sensitive.

In Western astrology

Ptolemy assigns Sagittarius to Jupiter; in the later traditional scheme it is Jupiter's diurnal domicile, Pisces being its nocturnal one. Mercury is in detriment here, opposite its own sign Gemini. Medieval astrologers placed the South Node's exaltation here. In the Hellenistic scheme the fire signs are ruled by the Sun by day and Jupiter by night, with Saturn participating.

Modern Western astrology reads Sagittarius as the archetype of the seeker: the traveller, the philosopher, the teacher and the free spirit.

Strengths

Sagittarius gives optimism, generosity, honesty, humour and a love of learning. It inspires others with its sense of possibility, and its faith that life means something carries it through difficulty. It is frank, fair and usually the first to forgive. It widens every horizon it touches.

Challenges

The shadow of the quest is restlessness. Sagittarius may promise more than it can deliver, preach rather than listen, or move on rather than stay with what is difficult. Its frankness can be tactless. Its growth often comes through completion: aiming the arrow, and following it all the way to the target.

In relationships

Sagittarius loves with enthusiasm and honesty. It wants a partner who is also a companion in adventure and in learning, who shares its values and gives it room to roam. It is generous and loyal, and it needs freedom within commitment. Its opposite sign, Gemini (the 7th from Sagittarius), describes the partnership lesson: listening, curiosity about details, and the pleasure of conversation.

In career and work

Sagittarius suits work with meaning and range: teaching and academia, religion and philosophy, law, publishing, travel and tourism, international work, sport (especially outdoor and horse sports), coaching and motivation. It thrives where it can grow and where its work feels like it matters.

Health as wellbeing

Sagittarius is associated with the thighs and hips in both traditions, and in Western astrology with the liver through Jupiter. As wellbeing, it benefits from outdoor activity, moderation in appetite, and time to reflect. These are traditional associations, not medical advice.

How Sagittarius changes

  • As Sun sign: the core identity is optimistic, independent and meaning-seeking.
  • As Moon sign: the emotional nature is buoyant and honest; the person feels safe when they have freedom and a sense of purpose.
  • As ascendant: the person tends to be open, friendly and active. Jupiter is lagna lord (also ruling the 4th). The Sun, ruling the 9th, is a strong benefic, and the Sun with Mercury (lord of the 10th) can form a classic raja yoga.
  • By nakshatra. Mula (0°–13°20′) gives the urge to get to the root of things, often through upheaval; Purva Ashadha (13°20′–26°40′) gives conviction and invincible spirit; Uttara Ashadha's first pada (26°40′–30°) gives lasting victory through principle.
  • By planets in it. Jupiter here is at home and wise; the Sun here is principled; Mercury here thinks in big ideas and skips details; Venus here loves freedom and travel.

Sagittarius in every chart

Everyone has Sagittarius somewhere in the chart. The house it occupies is where you seek meaning, freedom and growth. Sagittarius on the 10th points to a career in teaching, law or travel; on the 4th, a home full of books and guests; on the 7th, a partner from another culture or with a strong philosophy.

Following the ruler

Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, is the planet to follow. Wherever Jupiter sits by sign and house shows where Sagittarius's quest leads: Jupiter in the 9th to faith and study, in the 10th to public teaching or advisory work, in the 5th to children and creativity. A strong Jupiter makes every Sagittarius placement more fortunate; a strained Jupiter asks them to guard against overreach.

Jupiter's two signs

Jupiter rules two signs, and comparing them shows Sagittarius clearly. Pisces, Jupiter's water sign, turns wisdom inward — devotion, compassion, the dissolving of the self in something larger. Sagittarius, Jupiter's fire sign, turns it outward — teaching, travelling, arguing for what is right, aiming at a goal. Both are generous and both seek meaning; Sagittarius looks for it on the road, Pisces in the depths.

Sign aspects (Jaimini)

In the Jaimini system (rashi drishti, Jaimini Sutras ch. 1), the dual signs aspect each other. So Sagittarius aspects Gemini, Virgo and Pisces.

Vedic and Western views compared

Both traditions read Sagittarius as a sign of faith, learning and adventure, ruled by Jupiter. The zodiacs differ by about 24°, so the galactic centre falls late in tropical Sagittarius but early in sidereal Sagittarius. The nodes' dignities here are debated in both traditions.
