In short: The Moon and Jupiter together form Gajakesari yoga (Jupiter in an angle from the Moon includes the same sign). It is traditionally linked with wisdom, good name, generosity and a protected, optimistic mind.
At a glance
| Planets | The Moon (Chandra) and Jupiter (Guru) |
| Natures | The Moon: natural benefic; Jupiter: natural benefic |
| Natural relationship (BPHS) | The Moon sees Jupiter as neutral; Jupiter sees the Moon as friend |
| Named combination | Gajakesari yoga (one form) |
| Mutual sub-period | Jupiter antardasha in Moon mahadasha: about 1 year 4 months |
How the two blend
Jupiter and the Moon are friends in BPHS. Gajakesari — "elephant and lion" — is formed when Jupiter is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon, so the conjunction is one form of it. Classical texts praise it for intelligence, fame and prosperity; later practice stresses that both planets must be reasonably strong and unafflicted for it to deliver much. In Cancer Jupiter is exalted and the Moon at home — a celebrated form; in Capricorn Jupiter is debilitated; in Scorpio the Moon is.
In the natural friendship table they are unequal (the Moon counts Jupiter as neutral, Jupiter counts the Moon as friend); that is the first clue to whether the pair cooperates. The Moon brings the mind, feelings, the mother, home and public mood; Jupiter brings wisdom, teachers, children, dharma, wealth and grace.
Strengths and challenges
Strengths: wisdom, generosity, emotional stability and a good reputation.
Challenges: complacency and over-indulgence.
The gifts to build on: empathy and the ability to make others feel at home, and faith, generosity and good judgement. The shadows to watch: moodiness and taking everything personally, and preaching, complacency and over-promising.
Love and marriage
For love, the short version: kind, generous and emotionally wise. On its own the Moon needs emotional safety, regular tenderness and a partner who notices moods, while Jupiter looks for a principled partner and grows love through shared values; together the person tries to satisfy both needs in one bond. Jupiter in the pair protects relationships and, traditionally, signifies the husband. The conjunction speaks directly for the spouse where one of its planets rules the 7th: the Moon is the 7th lord for Capricorn rising; Jupiter is the 7th lord for Gemini and Virgo rising. The house matters: in the 7th it describes the spouse, in the 5th the romance, in the 8th the depth and durability of the bond.
Career and money
For career, the combination favours teaching, counselling, law, finance and public service. Fields that combine the two work best: the Moon does well with the public, care, food, hospitality and anything that nourishes, while Jupiter suits teaching, law, finance, counselling, religion, advisory and senior roles. It becomes a raja yoga for Aries, Cancer and Pisces ascendants, where the pair joins an angle lord with a trine lord. A dhana (wealth) yoga forms for Scorpio rising, where the pair links the 2nd or 11th with a trine or with each other. It is a career conjunction first of all where the Moon rules the 10th for Libra rising; Jupiter rules the 10th for Gemini and Pisces rising. With money, finances fluctuate with mood and circumstance, so a reserve fund gives peace of mind, and money accumulates through patience, counsel and ethical dealings.
Health and wellbeing
Tradition's advice for this pair: moderation keeps this pair healthy. The Moon is linked with sleep, fluids, digestion and emotional rhythm; Jupiter with the liver, fat, sugar balance and over-indulgence. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.
By sign
Dignity by sign decides much. Taken together, the two are best placed in Cancer, and least comfortable in Capricorn.

By rising sign: what the pair rules
Lordship changes with the ascendant, and so does the yoga the pair forms:
| Rising sign | The Moon rules | Jupiter rules | Combination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4th | 9th and 12th | raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord) |
| Taurus | 3rd | 8th and 11th | — |
| Gemini | 2nd | 7th and 10th | — |
| Cancer | 1st | 6th and 9th | raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord) |
| Leo | 12th | 5th and 8th | — |
| Virgo | 11th | 4th and 7th | — |
| Libra | 10th | 3rd and 6th | — |
| Scorpio | 9th | 2nd and 5th | dhana yoga (wealth-house lords) |
| Sagittarius | 8th | 1st and 4th | — |
| Capricorn | 7th | 3rd and 12th | — |
| Aquarius | 6th | 2nd and 11th | — |
| Pisces | 5th | 1st and 10th | raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord) |
By house
Its best houses are the 4th, 1st and 5th; the 8th and 12th are the most demanding. The Moon has directional strength in the 4th; Jupiter has directional strength in the 1st. In the 7th it is a marriage statement, in the 10th a career statement, and in the 2nd or 11th a money statement.
In the dashas
Its clearest periods are the Jupiter antardasha of Moon mahadasha and the reverse, each about 1 year 4 months, within mahadashas of 10 and 16 years. Classically the Moon matures around age 24 and Jupiter around 16, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.
What else changes it
- Degree. Planets within a few degrees blend strongly; at opposite ends of a sign they share it more loosely.
- Aspects. Aspects modify it: Jupiter protects, Saturn tests, Mars stirs.
- Nakshatra and navamsa. Look at both planets' nakshatras and navamsa signs before judging.
The Western view
In Western astrology a Moon–Jupiter conjunction gives emotional generosity, optimism and a nurturing, expansive nature.
FAQ
Is Gajakesari yoga common? Fairly — Jupiter is in an angle from the Moon in about a third of charts. Its value depends on the dignity and condition of both planets.
Is the Moon–Jupiter conjunction good for marriage? It can support or complicate marriage depending on placement; in the 7th house, or with the 7th lord in the pair, it is a central factor. Kind, generous and emotionally wise.
Does the Moon with Jupiter form a raja yoga? Yes, by lordship, for Aries, Cancer and Pisces rising, where one rules an angle and the other a trine. It forms a dhana yoga for Scorpio rising.
When does the Moon–Jupiter conjunction give results? In the Moon and Jupiter mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 1 year 4 months.
Does it matter how close the Moon and Jupiter are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
