In short: The Sun and Jupiter together join two friends: the soul and wisdom. The combination tends to give dignity, principle, generosity and respected leadership.

At a glance

Planets The Sun (Surya) and Jupiter (Guru)
Natures The Sun: natural malefic; Jupiter: natural benefic
Natural relationship (BPHS) The Sun sees Jupiter as friend; Jupiter sees the Sun as friend
Combustion Jupiter is combust within about 11° of the Sun (Surya Siddhanta orbs; texts vary)
Mutual sub-period Jupiter antardasha in Sun mahadasha: about 10 months

How the two blend

The Sun and Jupiter are natural friends in BPHS. Jupiter ennobles the Sun's authority with ethics, and the Sun gives Jupiter's wisdom visibility. Classical descriptions associate the pair with respect, wealth and a religious or learned nature. When Jupiter is very close to the Sun it is combust, and its benefic qualities are traditionally reduced. In Sagittarius and Pisces Jupiter is at home; in Leo the Sun; in Aries the Sun is exalted; in Cancer Jupiter.

Their natural relationship is mutual friends, so the blend is easy. The Sun brings identity, authority, the father and the will to shine; Jupiter brings wisdom, teachers, children, dharma, wealth and grace.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: principle, generosity, wisdom and dignified leadership.

Challenges: self-righteousness, and Jupiter's gifts muted when combust.

At best the pair combines moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right with faith, generosity and good judgement; at worst, pride that cannot admit a mistake feeds preaching, complacency and over-promising.

Love and marriage

For love, the short version: generous and principled. The pair asks a partner to meet two sets of needs: the Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time, and Jupiter looks for a principled partner and grows love through shared values. Jupiter in the pair protects relationships and, traditionally, signifies the husband. Marriage is most directly involved when one planet owns the 7th house: the Sun is the 7th lord for Aquarius rising; Jupiter is the 7th lord for Gemini and Virgo rising. In the 7th house the partner tends to embody both planets; in the 5th the combination colours courtship; in the 2nd, family life after marriage.

Career and money

For career, the combination favours government, law, teaching, religion and advisory roles. The Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name. Jupiter suits teaching, law, finance, counselling, religion, advisory and senior roles. The pair does well where these meet. By lordship the pair forms a raja yoga (an angle lord with a trine lord) for Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, a classical marker of rise and recognition, strongest in an angle or trine. Wealth combinations (dhana yoga) arise for Cancer rising. It is a career conjunction first of all where the Sun rules the 10th for Scorpio rising; Jupiter rules the 10th for Gemini and Pisces rising. Financially there are two tendencies: income rises with responsibility and recognition rather than speculation; and money accumulates through patience, counsel and ethical dealings.

Health and wellbeing

Tradition's advice for this pair: moderation and purpose support this pair. The Sun is linked with vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone; Jupiter with the liver, fat, sugar balance and over-indulgence. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

By sign

The sign sets each planet's dignity, which changes the conjunction more than anything else. By combined dignity it is strongest in Aries, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius and Pisces and hardest in Libra and Capricorn.

Sign The Sun Jupiter
Aries exalted (deepest at 10°) friend's sign (Mars)
Taurus enemy's sign (Venus) enemy's sign (Venus)
Gemini neutral sign (Mercury) enemy's sign (Mercury)
Cancer friend's sign (the Moon) exalted (deepest at 5°)
Leo moolatrikona 0°–20°; own sign friend's sign (the Sun)
Virgo neutral sign (Mercury) enemy's sign (Mercury)
Libra debilitated (deepest at 10°) enemy's sign (Venus)
Scorpio friend's sign (Mars) friend's sign (Mars)
Sagittarius friend's sign (Jupiter) moolatrikona 0°–10°; own sign
Capricorn enemy's sign (Saturn) debilitated (deepest at 5°)
Aquarius enemy's sign (Saturn) neutral sign (Saturn)
Pisces friend's sign (Jupiter) own sign

By rising sign: what the pair rules

Here is what each planet rules for each rising sign, and the classical combination that results:

Rising sign The Sun rules Jupiter rules Combination
Aries 5th 9th and 12th —
Taurus 4th 8th and 11th —
Gemini 3rd 7th and 10th —
Cancer 2nd 6th and 9th dhana yoga (wealth-house lords)
Leo 1st 5th and 8th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Virgo 12th 4th and 7th —
Libra 11th 3rd and 6th —
Scorpio 10th 2nd and 5th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Sagittarius 9th 1st and 4th raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord)
Capricorn 8th 3rd and 12th —
Aquarius 7th 2nd and 11th —
Pisces 6th 1st and 10th —

By house

The house shows where in life the conjunction works. Weighing angles, trines, growth houses, directional strength and natural significators, it does best in the 10th, 1st and 9th and asks most care in the 8th and 12th. The Sun has directional strength in the 10th; Jupiter has directional strength in the 1st. For the questions people ask most: the 7th house ties it to the spouse, the 10th to career, the 2nd and 11th to income. Malefics do well in the growth houses (3rd, 6th, 11th), and this pair includes one.

In the dashas

The pair comes forward in the mahadasha of either planet (the Sun: 6 years; Jupiter: 16 years) and most of all in the Sun–Jupiter and Jupiter–the Sun sub-periods, each lasting 10 months. Classically the Sun matures around age 22 and Jupiter around 16, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.

What else changes it

  • Degree. The closer the two are in degree, the more they merge; most astrologers give a conjunction within a few degrees more weight.
  • Aspects. An aspect from Jupiter softens and protects the pair, from Saturn it adds delay, from Mars heat.
  • Nakshatra and navamsa. Look at both planets' nakshatras and navamsa signs before judging.
  • Combustion. Within about 11° of the Sun, Jupiter is combust and its significations are partly absorbed into the Sun's agenda.

The Western view

In Western astrology a Sun–Jupiter conjunction gives optimism, generosity and expansive confidence, with excess as the risk.

FAQ

Is the Sun–Jupiter good? Traditionally yes, unless Jupiter is deeply combust; its sign and house refine it.

Is the Sun–Jupiter conjunction good for marriage? It depends on house and lordship more than on the pair itself. It is most directly about marriage in the 7th house, or where one of the two rules the 7th. Generous and principled.

Does the Sun with Jupiter form a raja yoga? Yes, by lordship, for Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, where one rules an angle and the other a trine. It forms a dhana yoga for Cancer rising.

When does the Sun–Jupiter conjunction give results? In the Sun and Jupiter mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 10 months.

Does it matter how close the Sun and Jupiter are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
