In short: The Sun with Ketu is the other eclipse combination of the Sun. It tends to give detachment from ego and status, spiritual or intuitive gifts, and sometimes uncertainty about identity or the father.

At a glance

Planets The Sun (Surya) and Ketu
Natures The Sun: natural malefic; Ketu: natural malefic
Natural relationship (BPHS) not defined for the nodes; Ketu acts through the Sun and its dispositor
Eclipse link a luminary with a node; a birth near an actual eclipse intensifies it
Mutual sub-period Ketu antardasha in Sun mahadasha: about 4 months

How the two blend

Ketu, the headless body of the eclipse myth, separates. Beside the Sun it tends to dim worldly ambition and turn the self inward. Classical and later texts read it as a strain on the Sun's significations and as a strongly spiritual combination. A birth near a solar eclipse intensifies it. The Sun's sign dignity and Ketu's dispositor are key.

As a node, Ketu gives the results of the planet it joins, here the Sun, coloured by the lord of the sign they share. The Sun brings identity, authority, the father and the will to shine; Ketu brings detachment, past skill, spirituality, research and letting go.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: humility, spiritual depth, intuition and independence from approval.

Challenges: low confidence, distance from the father, and uncertainty about direction.

The gifts to build on: moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right, and deep intuition and mastery that looks effortless. The shadows to watch: pride that cannot admit a mistake, and withdrawal and dismissing what one already has.

Love and marriage

For love, the short version: private and intuitive. The pair asks a partner to meet two sets of needs: the Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time, and Ketu can feel distant or self-sufficient in love and needs a partner who respects their solitude. Ketu with the Sun makes love quieter, more detached or spiritually coloured. Placed in the 7th house itself, the pair describes the partner as carrying both planets' qualities; in the 5th it shapes romance; in the 12th, private life and intimacy.

Career and money

At work the pair favours research, healing, spiritual and technical work. The Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name. Ketu suits research, healing, technical precision, occult studies, coding and spiritual work. The pair does well where these meet. Ketu rules no sign, so the pair forms no lordship yoga by itself; it amplifies whatever the Sun rules for the ascendant, and in KP practice gives the Sun's results. On wealth, income rises with responsibility and recognition rather than speculation, while a simple, detached relationship with money works better than chasing it.

Health and wellbeing

Tradition's advice for this pair: grounding in the body helps. The Sun is linked with vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone; Ketu with mysterious or recurring complaints, injuries and the nervous system. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

By house

By house, the pair is most at home in the 10th, 1st and 3rd, and needs most care in the 12th and 8th. The Sun has directional strength in the 10th. In the 7th it is a marriage statement, in the 10th a career statement, and in the 2nd or 11th a money statement. Malefics do well in the growth houses (3rd, 6th, 11th), and this pair includes one.

In the dashas

In Vimshottari terms, watch the Sun and Ketu mahadashas (6 and 7 years), and especially the Sun–Ketu and Ketu–Sun antardashas of about 4 months each. Classically the Sun matures around age 22 and Ketu around 48, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.

What else changes it

  • Degree. Closeness matters: a tight conjunction fuses the two, a wide one lets each act more separately.
  • Aspects. An aspect from Jupiter softens and protects the pair, from Saturn it adds delay, from Mars heat.
  • Nakshatra and navamsa. Look at both planets' nakshatras and navamsa signs before judging.

The Western view

In Western astrology the Sun conjunct the South Node is read as familiar, inherited strengths of identity, with growth toward the opposite North Node.

FAQ

Is the Sun–Ketu bad? It is a detaching, spiritual combination rather than simply bad; it depends on the whole chart.

Is the Sun–Ketu conjunction good for marriage? Not by itself either way: the 7th house, the 7th lord and Venus decide marriage. The pair matters most when it sits in or rules the 7th. Private and intuitive.

Does Ketu with the Sun form a yoga? Ketu has no lordship, so it forms no lordship yoga by itself; it magnifies the yogas the Sun is part of for the ascendant.

When does the Sun–Ketu conjunction give results? In the Sun and Ketu mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 4 months.

Does it matter how close the Sun and Ketu are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
