In short: The Sun and the Moon together means a birth at or near the new Moon (amavasya). Will and feeling, soul and mind, are fused: the person tends to be single-minded and self-contained, with the Moon's light absorbed into the Sun's.
At a glance
| Planets | The Sun (Surya) and the Moon (Chandra) |
| Natures | The Sun: natural malefic; the Moon: natural benefic |
| Natural relationship (BPHS) | The Sun sees the Moon as friend; the Moon sees the Sun as friend |
| Named combination | New-the Moon birth (amavasya) when close |
| Combustion | The Moon is combust within about 12° of the Sun (Surya Siddhanta orbs; texts vary) |
| Mutual sub-period | Moon antardasha in Sun mahadasha: about 6 months |
How the two blend
The Sun is the soul and the Moon the mind (Brihat Jataka 2.1), and they are friends in BPHS. Joined in one sign, they act as one purpose. Because the Moon is dark near the new Moon, classical texts count it weak here, and the closer the two, the more the Moon's independent expression is reduced. Many astrologers read this as a person whose emotional life and sense of self cannot be separated: strong focus, sometimes difficulty seeing oneself from outside. The sign matters a great deal: in Aries the Sun is exalted, in Taurus the Moon, in Leo and Cancer each is at home.
In the natural friendship table they are mutual friends; that is the first clue to whether the pair cooperates. One side of the pair is identity, authority, the father and the will to shine, the other the mind, feelings, the mother, home and public mood.
Strengths and challenges
Strengths: focus, integrity between feeling and action, strong will.
Challenges: a dark Moon's sensitivity, self-absorption, and difficulty with perspective.
The gifts to build on: moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right, and empathy and the ability to make others feel at home. The shadows to watch: pride that cannot admit a mistake, and moodiness and taking everything personally.
Love and marriage
In relationships the classic note is: partners help by offering reflection and perspective. On its own the Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time, while the Moon needs emotional safety, regular tenderness and a partner who notices moods; together the person tries to satisfy both needs in one bond. Marriage is most directly involved when one planet owns the 7th house: the Sun is the 7th lord for Aquarius rising; the Moon is the 7th lord for Capricorn rising. The house matters: in the 7th it describes the spouse, in the 5th the romance, in the 8th the depth and durability of the bond.
Career and money
For career, the combination favours self-directed work and leadership. Fields that combine the two work best: the Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name, while the Moon does well with the public, care, food, hospitality and anything that nourishes. It becomes a raja yoga for Aries and Scorpio ascendants, where the pair joins an angle lord with a trine lord. A dhana (wealth) yoga forms for Cancer rising, where the pair links the 2nd or 11th with a trine or with each other. It is a career conjunction first of all where the Sun rules the 10th for Scorpio rising; the Moon rules the 10th for Libra rising. With money, money tends to follow authority and position, and income moves in tides, rising when the person serves the public's needs.
Health and wellbeing
Tradition's advice for this pair: rest and emotional care support a new-the Moon birth. The Sun is linked with vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone; the Moon with sleep, fluids, digestion and emotional rhythm. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.
By sign
The sign sets each planet's dignity, which changes the conjunction more than anything else. By combined dignity it is strongest in Cancer and Leo and hardest in Libra.
| Sign | The Sun | The Moon |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | exalted (deepest at 10°) | neutral sign (Mars) |
| Taurus | enemy's sign (Venus) | exalted (deepest at 3°); moolatrikona (range varies by text) |
| Gemini | neutral sign (Mercury) | friend's sign (Mercury) |
| Cancer | friend's sign (the Moon) | own sign |
| Leo | moolatrikona 0°–20°; own sign | friend's sign (the Sun) |
| Virgo | neutral sign (Mercury) | friend's sign (Mercury) |
| Libra | debilitated (deepest at 10°) | neutral sign (Venus) |
| Scorpio | friend's sign (Mars) | debilitated (deepest at 3°) |
| Sagittarius | friend's sign (Jupiter) | neutral sign (Jupiter) |
| Capricorn | enemy's sign (Saturn) | neutral sign (Saturn) |
| Aquarius | enemy's sign (Saturn) | neutral sign (Saturn) |
| Pisces | friend's sign (Jupiter) | neutral sign (Jupiter) |
By rising sign: what the pair rules
Lordship changes with the ascendant, and so does the yoga the pair forms:
| Rising sign | The Sun rules | The Moon rules | Combination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | 4th | raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord) |
| Taurus | 4th | 3rd | — |
| Gemini | 3rd | 2nd | — |
| Cancer | 2nd | 1st | dhana yoga (wealth-house lords) |
| Leo | 1st | 12th | — |
| Virgo | 12th | 11th | — |
| Libra | 11th | 10th | — |
| Scorpio | 10th | 9th | raja yoga (angle lord with trine lord) |
| Sagittarius | 9th | 8th | — |
| Capricorn | 8th | 7th | — |
| Aquarius | 7th | 6th | — |
| Pisces | 6th | 5th | — |
By house
The house shows where in life the conjunction works. Weighing angles, trines, growth houses, directional strength and natural significators, it does best in the 4th, 10th and 1st and asks most care in the 8th and 12th. The Sun has directional strength in the 10th; the Moon has directional strength in the 4th. For the questions people ask most: the 7th house ties it to the spouse, the 10th to career, the 2nd and 11th to income. Because the pair includes a malefic, the upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 11th) improve it over time.
In the dashas
The pair comes forward in the mahadasha of either planet (the Sun: 6 years; the Moon: 10 years) and most of all in the Sun–the Moon and the Moon–the Sun sub-periods, each lasting 6 months. Classically the Sun matures around age 22 and the Moon around 24, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.
What else changes it
- Degree. The closer the two are in degree, the more they merge; most astrologers give a conjunction within a few degrees more weight.
- Aspects. An aspect from Jupiter softens and protects the pair, from Saturn it adds delay, from Mars heat.
- Nakshatra and navamsa. Look at both planets' nakshatras and navamsa signs before judging.
- Combustion. Within about 12° of the Sun, the Moon is combust and its significations are partly absorbed into the Sun's agenda.
The Western view
In Western astrology the Sun–the Moon conjunction is the New the Moon birth, read as a fresh, instinctive, self-motivated personality whose conscious aims and needs pull in the same direction.
FAQ
Is a new-the Moon birth unlucky? No. Classical texts count the dark Moon as weak, but the combination also gives focus and unity of purpose.
Is the Sun–the Moon conjunction good for marriage? It can support or complicate marriage depending on placement; in the 7th house, or with the 7th lord in the pair, it is a central factor. Partners help by offering reflection and perspective.
Does the Sun with the Moon form a raja yoga? Yes, by lordship, for Aries and Scorpio rising, where one rules an angle and the other a trine. It forms a dhana yoga for Cancer rising.
When does the Sun–the Moon conjunction give results? In the Sun and Moon mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 6 months.
Does it matter how close the Sun and the Moon are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
