In short: The Sun with Rahu is one of the eclipse combinations: the node that swallows the Sun sits beside it. It tends to give intense ambition and a hunger for recognition, along with confusion about identity or a complicated relationship with the father.

At a glance

Planets The Sun (Surya) and Rahu
Natures The Sun: natural malefic; Rahu: natural malefic
Natural relationship (BPHS) not defined for the nodes; Rahu acts through the Sun and its dispositor
Eclipse link a luminary with a node; a birth near an actual eclipse intensifies it
Mutual sub-period Rahu antardasha in Sun mahadasha: about 11 months

How the two blend

The myth of Svarbhanu explains this pairing: Rahu pursues the Sun and the Moon and eclipses them. Classical and later texts read the Sun with Rahu as a cloud over the Sun's significations — self, father, authority — and also as a magnifier of ambition. Some later writers call it grahan (eclipse) yoga, a modern label. A birth near an actual solar eclipse intensifies the theme. The Sun's dignity by sign and its dispositor matter.

Rahu has no friendship table; it magnifies or detaches from whatever Sun signifies, and also carries the agenda of the sign's lord. One side of the pair is identity, authority, the father and the will to shine, the other desire, ambition, the foreign, the new and the unconventional.

Strengths and challenges

Strengths: ambition, charisma, unconventional leadership and drive.

Challenges: identity confusion, conflict with authority, and a restless need for recognition.

The gifts to build on: moral courage and the ability to stand alone for what is right, and the boldness to break a pattern no one else questions. The shadows to watch: pride that cannot admit a mistake, and never feeling it is enough.

Love and marriage

Relationship-wise, partners may find this person intense; clarity about needs helps. The pair asks a partner to meet two sets of needs: the Sun needs a partner who respects their dignity and lets them lead some of the time, and Rahu draws unconventional or cross-cultural attractions and intense, obsessive feelings. Rahu with the Sun makes attraction intense and sometimes unconventional. The house matters: in the 7th it describes the spouse, in the 5th the romance, in the 8th the depth and durability of the bond.

Career and money

For career, the combination favours politics, media, technology and foreign work. The Sun seeks visible responsibility, government or leadership roles and work that carries their name, and Rahu suits technology, foreign work, media, politics, aviation and anything new or disruptive; careers that use both tend to suit best. Rahu rules no sign, so the pair forms no lordship yoga by itself; it amplifies whatever the Sun rules for the ascendant, and in KP practice gives the Sun's results. On wealth, income rises with responsibility and recognition rather than speculation, while windfalls and sudden losses are both possible, so caution with risk is wise.

Health and wellbeing

Tradition's advice for this pair: grounding and moderation help. The Sun is linked with vitality, the heart, eyesight and the backbone; Rahu with unusual or hard-to-diagnose complaints, anxiety and addictions. This is traditional astrology, not medical advice.

By sign

The sign sets each planet's dignity, which changes the conjunction more than anything else. By combined dignity it is strongest in Aries and Leo and hardest in Libra.

By house

The house shows where in life the conjunction works. Weighing angles, trines, growth houses, directional strength and natural significators, it does best in the 10th, 1st and 3rd and asks most care in the 8th and 12th. The Sun has directional strength in the 10th. The 7th, 10th, 2nd and 11th houses connect it to marriage, career and money respectively. With a natural malefic in the pair, the 3rd, 6th and 11th (upachaya) houses are classically good: difficulties turn into drive.

In the dashas

The pair comes forward in the mahadasha of either planet (the Sun: 6 years; Rahu: 18 years) and most of all in the Sun–Rahu and Rahu–the Sun sub-periods, each lasting 11 months. Classically the Sun matures around age 22 and Rahu around 42, which can mark when the combination shows most clearly.

What else changes it

  • Degree. Closeness matters: a tight conjunction fuses the two, a wide one lets each act more separately.
  • Aspects. An aspect from Jupiter softens and protects the pair, from Saturn it adds delay, from Mars heat.
  • Nakshatra and navamsa. Look at both planets' nakshatras and navamsa signs before judging.

The Western view

In Western astrology the Sun conjunct the North Node is read as identity tied to life direction and growth; conjunct the South Node, to familiar strengths.

FAQ

Is the Sun–Rahu an eclipse yoga? It is often called an eclipse combination; the name 'grahan yoga' is a later label. Its effects depend on the whole chart.

Is the Sun–Rahu conjunction good for marriage? It depends on house and lordship more than on the pair itself. It is most directly about marriage in the 7th house, or where one of the two rules the 7th. Partners may find this person intense; clarity about needs helps.

Does Rahu with the Sun form a yoga? Rahu has no lordship, so it forms no lordship yoga by itself; it magnifies the yogas the Sun is part of for the ascendant.

When does the Sun–Rahu conjunction give results? In the Sun and Rahu mahadashas, and especially in their mutual antardashas of about 11 months.

Does it matter how close the Sun and Rahu are? Yes. A close conjunction blends the two strongly; planets at opposite ends of a sign are read as sharing it more loosely.
